Chapter 63: The Battle at the Camp

Three days passed quickly. During this time, Wang Zhi and the others spent nearly 500 survival points on ammunition at the shooting range. Despite the preparations, Wang Zhi still felt a heavy heart. This time, the enemy was human — former compatriots, and they would soon be forced to fight each other. This was one of the biggest struggles Wang Zhi faced internally.

Over the past few months, he had realized how much he had changed. He used to be someone who couldn’t even bring himself to kill a fish, but now he had become a cold-hearted warrior, capable of slaying zombies without a second thought.

The day of departure arrived, and Wang Zhi woke up early. It was clear that the others hadn’t slept much either, as they had all gathered in the living room when the lights turned on. Wang Zhi checked everyone’s equipment — weapons, ammunition, food, medical kits — and once everything was confirmed, he had everyone gear up with their bulletproof vests and protective suits. Then, they headed to Duan Qingtian’s residence to bring him along. From there, they made their way to the command center on the first floor, where Adam’s team was waiting.

As agreed, the ten soldiers that Jiexie had arranged were already at Adam’s, ready to depart at any moment.

“Hello, Captain Adam. I’m Wang Zhi, the leader of the team ‘Last Ember.’ We need your ten soldiers for this mission,” Wang Zhi said as he approached.

“Alright, everyone’s here. Come on over,” Adam called out.

Ten fully armed soldiers walked out from the building.

“Hello, Captain Wang. I’m their leader, Wei Zheng. If you have any instructions, feel free to let me know.”

“Alright, no time to waste. Let’s get moving. Duan Qingtian, Zhang Ming, you two lead the way,” Wang Zhi confirmed.

Duan Qingtian led them to Elevator No. 7, which would take them to the W District, where the camp was located, built in a village within the district.

November 2025, clear skies.

Two months had passed since the disaster struck. Without human carbon emissions, the temperature on Earth had dropped. The autumn winds blew across Wang Zhi’s face, and he looked up at the sky. He wasn’t sure if zombies would freeze to death in winter, nor did he know how long they could survive without food. These were unknowns for him.

“Wow, it’s been more than a month since we’ve been out. The air outside is getting better!” The chubby man, Fatty, was running around excitedly like a dog that had been cooped up too long.

“Hey, Fatty, be careful. Don’t drop my sniper rifle or I’ll feed you to the zombies,” Su Mu Ying warned.

“I’m telling you, Yingjie, do you know how heavy this thing is? Stop with the sarcastic comments!” Fatty replied.

“How about I take it, and you go chop down some zombies instead?”

“I think I’ll keep it. Gotta work out, haha!”

After traveling for about three hours, they arrived at the site of Duan Qingtian’s fallen camp. From a distance in the woods, Wang Zhi used binoculars to observe. Just as Zhang Ming had described, the camp was backed by a river and flanked by a mountain. The entrance had two watchtowers, each manned by a soldier, and inside the camp, many soldiers were coming and going.

Wang Zhi had everyone take a rest. It was still early, and getting too close now might raise suspicion, so they would wait until nightfall to move.

“Tonight, we’ll send our people to sneak into the perimeter of the wall. Sakura will take out the watchmen on the towers with sniping shots. We must ensure the sentries can’t send out an alarm. This step is critical. If it goes wrong, we’ll retreat immediately. We can’t afford a direct confrontation. If everything goes smoothly, we’ll infiltrate the camp and use our night-vision equipment to take out any lone soldiers. If anyone sounds an alarm, we’ll shoot them and then switch to direct combat,” Wang Zhi outlined the plan.

“The wind’s pretty strong tonight. The bullet trajectory could be affected, so the initial plan might fail,” Su Mu Ying said.

“Even with strong wind, there will be a moment it dies down. We just need to wait for the right opportunity. The first step is crucial. If we can infiltrate successfully, we might be able to eliminate half the forces before the battle even begins!” Wang Zhi replied, reassuringly.

“Don’t worry. If we mess up, we’ll just pull back,” Su Mu Ying responded nonchalantly.

The group rested in the woods, awaiting the arrival of nightfall. Duan Qingtian, in particular, was very anxious, unable to wait any longer. Wang Zhi could understand his frustration — if it were his own team members who had fallen, he probably wouldn’t be in any better state either.

As the night descended, Wang Zhi took out his binoculars and observed the camp again. The lights were on, and the engines were running. Soldiers were gathered around the campfire, roasting food and chatting.

“I’ll go find a good shooting position,” Su Mu Ying said, standing up.

“Liuli, stay close and ensure Sakura’s safety,” Wang Zhi added, instructing her to protect Su Mu Ying from any potential surprise zombie attacks.

“Captain Wei, you and your team will enter from the left side of the wall. If there’s any unexpected situation, report immediately over the radio,” Wang Zhi finished.

After confirming the radio frequencies, the teams moved toward the camp’s outer wall.

Since Duan Qingtian and Zhang Ming had been there before, Wang Zhi placed Duan Qingtian with Wei Zheng’s team to guide them.

“Sakura, are you ready?” Wang Zhi asked over the radio.

“Yes, I’ve found a good position. But the wind is a bit strong right now. We’ll need to wait a little longer.”

Wang Zhi waited quietly by the wall as time ticked by. The tension was rising, and if they didn’t act soon, they risked being discovered. He was prepared to order a retreat at any moment if Sakura couldn’t take the shot.

Just then, footsteps came from the other side of the wall. Someone was approaching!
