Chapter 64: Battle at the Camp (Part 2)
Upon hearing the footsteps, Wang Zhi and the others tensed up. Could they have been discovered?
“Target eliminated!”
The voice of Ying Xiu rang in their ears.
With the sentry gone, Wang Zhi finally relaxed. Just as he was considering the situation behind the wall, a sound of urination came from the other side.
It turned out someone had come out to relieve themselves. Wang Zhi exchanged a glance with the others. Lao He and the Fatty quickly positioned themselves, forming a human pyramid. Wang Zhi didn’t hesitate and stepped onto their hands. They exerted force, launching him high into the air.
Wang Zhi leaped onto the three-meter-high wall, spotting the soldier in the middle of his business. Wang Zhi jumped down, driving a dagger into the soldier’s neck. The soldier fell before he even had a chance to see who attacked.
Wang Zhi checked his surroundings, ensuring they hadn’t been detected. He then communicated over the radio, “All clear. Everyone come in. Ying, don’t shoot yet. We’ll look for another opportunity if we get exposed.”
Once everyone was inside, Wang Zhi moved to the shadows, looking for any isolated soldiers.
On the other side, Duan Qingtian’s team had infiltrated the enemy’s main camp, which was the residential area. Once they were hidden, they would take action if the enemy there became alerted.
After a short search, the teams had already eliminated five soldiers. Counting the sentry, they had taken down seven. The remaining soldiers were grouped together in threes or fives, making it difficult for any more silent kills.
“What should we do, Captain Wang?” Fatty asked, walking up to Wang Zhi.
“Spread out. Find cover. Prepare for a fight,” Wang Zhi instructed over the radio.
Once everyone had at least one target in sight, Wang Zhi counted to three. The first gunshot rang out from the camp!
Five soldiers in front of Wang Zhi fell instantly, blood splattering everywhere.
The other soldiers, hearing the noise and seeing their comrades fall, shouted in panic, “Enemy attack!” As one soldier yelled, his head exploded, and it was clear that Ying Xiu had taken the shot from afar.
But by then, it was too late. The enemy had already gone on high alert.
Several soldiers ran out from the residential area. Duan Qingtian, who had been lying in ambush, immediately sprang into action, rifle blazing, aiming to take down as many of the enemy as possible.
After a short burst of fire, almost half of the enemy had been eliminated. With the help of night vision equipment, Wang Zhi’s team had the upper hand in the darkness.
The enemy started regrouping, finding cover, and prepared to counterattack.
What they didn’t expect was that in the distant woods, a pair of eyes were still watching them.
Pop! Another head exploded. Ying Xiu had just killed another soldier hiding behind a tent.
Boom! An explosion echoed through the camp.
“The enemy has grenades!”
A voice from Wei Zheng’s team came through the radio.
“Everyone, turn off the lights around you!” Wang Zhi ordered. He then intensified their fire to create a chaotic environment.
The lights in the camp gradually went out. The enemy, now without any visibility, panicked and began throwing grenades indiscriminately, hoping to land them somewhere safe.
Unfortunately, some of them were unlucky and were injured by shrapnel.
After a round of suppression, the enemy’s morale was shattered. Wang Zhi could no longer see any of them in his line of sight.
“Ying, are there still enemies left?” Wang Zhi asked.
“Yes, but they’ve all run away,” Ying Xiu replied.
“They ran!? Where to?”
“To the survivor zone at the back.”
This was bad. If the enemy had mixed in with the survivors, it would pose the biggest safety threat.
The group regrouped, and one of Wei Zheng’s men had been unlucky enough to be injured by grenade shrapnel. Wang Zhi arranged for one of the soldiers to escort the injured man to a safe spot where Ying Xiu was.
“What should we do? Should we continue pursuing?” Zhang Ming asked.
“Let’s hold off for now. It’s not worth it if we get injured by these guys,” Wang Zhi replied. He planned to search the area first to see if there were any stragglers left.
After a few rounds of searching, they found thirty bodies. According to Zhang Ming, there should be more than forty enemies, meaning there were still about ten missing.
“Let’s stay on guard for now. We’ll let them come to us once it’s daylight,” Wang Zhi said.
“They’ll come out to die?” Zhang Ming asked, confused.
“Yes, just wait and see,” Wang Zhi replied confidently.
“Ying, how’s it over there?”
“It’s safe here. The wounded are already here.”
After receiving the reply, Wang Zhi waited behind cover until daybreak.
Meanwhile, the survivors in the civilian zone were already in chaos. The explosions had woken them, and they were trying to figure out what had happened. However, the sounds of the battle kept them from leaving their tents, praying not to get caught up in the conflict.
The next morning, as soon as dawn broke, Wang Zhi organized his team and moved forward. They stopped 100 meters from the survivor zone.
Wang Zhi took out a loudspeaker and shouted to the survivors, “Attention survivors inside! We’re here to rescue you. Please hurry and come out in an orderly fashion. Repeat, survivors inside, we are here to rescue you. Please hurry and come out in an orderly fashion.”
As Wang Zhi repeated this, the survivors gradually started to emerge, first a few, then dozens, until almost all of them had come out.
Now Zhang Ming understood Wang Zhi’s intention. This way, they could let the enemies reveal themselves and walk out to their deaths.
Once enough people had gathered, Wang Zhi changed his tone, “Now, please line up in groups of five, raise your hands, and walk towards us. We can guarantee your safety. Repeat, now, please line up in groups of five, raise your hands, and walk towards us. We can guarantee your safety.”
After this, several survivors began to walk toward them with their hands raised.
“Wei Zheng, your team will conduct body searches. As long as they don’t have any dangerous items, let them pass.”
The survivors walked up, hands raised. Once searched and cleared of weapons, they were placed aside.
Seeing the first group safely pass through, the rest of the survivors also lined up and walked over.
Soon, all the survivors from the other side had been safely taken to the side and confirmed to be unarmed.
“Wang Zhi, could the ones who escaped last night be hiding in those tents?” Fatty asked, walking over.
“There’s no one left in those tents,” Lao He replied.
“Yes, they’ve surrendered and disguised themselves as civilians to blend in,” Wang Zhi said, looking at the crowd.
Wang Zhi approached the crowd and selected five women. He whispered a few words to them.
“Lao He, have them line up.”
After Wang Zhi spoke, the five women began scanning the crowd.
After a while, the women whispered something to him.
After hearing their report, Wang Zhi smiled and said, “Duan Qingtian, Zhang Ming, come over here.”
“What’s going on, Captain Wang?” Duan Qingtian asked, frowning, not understanding what Wang Zhi was doing.
Wang Zhi had just asked the five women to look through the crowd for the soldiers. Having spent time with them, these women recognized the soldiers’ faces.
It was just as Wang Zhi had expected. After a while, the five women informed him of the locations of eleven soldiers hiding in the crowd. Wang Zhi told Duan Qingtian and Zhang Ming the positions of the soldiers.
“These are the ones. It’s up to you two to decide whether they live or die,” Wang Zhi said before stepping aside, waiting for their decision.
