Chapter 65: Exchange of Interests

Wang Zhi stood to the side, observing the two. In fact, he had already guessed the outcome. In the end, Duan Qingtian would not spare those people. Even if they were currently unarmed, Duan Qingtian would still kill them, avenging his sacrificed teammates.

After discussing for a while, Wang Zhi expected the outcome, but to his surprise, it didn’t unfold as anticipated. The two walked up to him.

“We won’t kill them. We’ll leave them to you to deal with when you get back. Earn more survival points. The vengeance has mostly been taken. There’s no meaning in killing those people now.” Duan Qingtian said to Wang Zhi.

After hearing Duan Qingtian’s words, Wang Zhi was somewhat impressed. This kind of composure was something he couldn’t learn.

“Understood!” Wang Zhi replied.

He then walked over to the eleven people.

Bang, bang, bang! Eleven gunshots rang out, and each shot found its mark. As the bullets were reloaded, the eleven people collapsed into a pool of blood. The few remaining survivors were so terrified that they crouched on the ground, too scared to speak, afraid that they would be the next target.

The people around Wang Zhi were also shocked by his actions.

“W-Wang… Captain, what are you doing?” the chubby man stammered, asking in a trembling voice.

“Everyone, don’t panic. These eleven people were from the front line of the army. They’re already taken care of. You don’t need to worry anymore.” Wang Zhi said, putting away his gun and addressing the crowd.

Since Duan Qingtian and the others had already let go, Wang Zhi decided to take action himself and remove any potential future threats. Wang Zhi hated leaving hidden dangers or uncertainties. He couldn’t guarantee that there wasn’t a suicide squad among these people. If even one of them were part of a suicide squad, they could take him down along with themselves in the Tower of Dawn.

It’s better to kill the wrong person than to let them live. If those reckless individuals dragged him down, he would lose everything.

“Ying Jie, you guys can come over now,” Wang Zhi said after the battle was nearly over, calling for Su Mu Ying and the others to return to the camp.

Meanwhile, Wang Zhi asked Wei Zheng and his group to search for useful military supplies. The supplies in the camp all belonged to the Tower of Dawn, and Wang Zhi had no interest in helping them pick up equipment. He just watched over the more than a hundred survivors.

The camp was near a river, and the people here weren’t particularly filthy, with many of them being women. Wang Zhi didn’t need to ask; he knew that these women had some survival value, while the men were likely strong and used for labor.

Seeing this scene, Wang Zhi sighed. There were bound to be more such refugee camps in the world. How many people were suffering in this way, enduring humiliation and hardship?

After a while, Su Mu Ying walked into the camp with Liu Li. Wang Zhi saw that the two of them were covered in blood. He walked over and asked, “What happened?”

“What else could happen? You threw grenades and caused explosions, attracting quite a few zombies. Liu Li and I had to deal with them first.” Su Mu Ying kicked Wang Zhi in the butt and said in frustration.

Wang Zhi covered his rear and walked away quickly, avoiding any further interaction with Su Mu Ying.

The chubby man, seeing Wang Zhi get kicked, stepped forward and stuck his own butt out, saying, “Ying Jie, I threw the grenades! Kick me!”

Su Mu Ying’s gaze turned cold as she looked at the chubby man, who, still oblivious to the danger, thought she would treat him like Wang Zhi. However, Su Mu Ying pulled out her knife and walked toward him.

Realizing the situation was serious, the chubby man ran away. But unfortunately, after only fifty meters, Su Mu Ying caught up and knocked him to the ground.

“Ying Jie, stop! I was just joking! The grenades were thrown by the enemy! Don’t stab me! The knife has zombie blood on it; I’ll get infected!” the chubby man pleaded while being pinned down.

Su Mu Ying finally released him and turned away.

Wang Zhi, watching from a distance, gave a thumbs-up. “I shall call you a warrior!”

“Next, we’ll take you to a safe place. On the way, don’t speak, and don’t panic if we encounter zombies. As long as we’re here, they won’t harm you,” Wang Zhi said to the more than a hundred survivors.

After a while, Wei Zheng’s group brought a large box of supplies to the camp entrance, including firearms, ammunition, food, and utensils.

Looking at all the supplies, Wang Zhi felt a pang of envy. If these things were brought to the Tower of Dawn, they would surely be worth more than the ten thousand survival points he had.

Once everyone gathered, Wang Zhi led the group out of the camp and began the journey back.

As he glanced back at the camp, he couldn’t help but think that it was such a shame. Despite its great location, it was so isolated.

“Where did you escape from to come to that camp?” Wang Zhi asked a woman he found among the survivors.

“We came from a nearby town. We built the camp at first, but after those people came, they took over our camp and killed many of us.” The woman answered, her head bowed.

“You’re not like those people, are you?” Wang Zhi asked after a while, sensing her concern.

“No.” She quickly responded.

“Thank you so much,” the woman said, unbuttoning her collar and leaning towards Wang Zhi.

Wang Zhi immediately pushed her away. “Don’t worry, we’ll do our best to escort you to the shelter.”

He quickly walked to the front of the group, fearing that more women would crowd around him if he stayed.

In this world, there was no true justice. Everything was a transaction, an exchange of benefits. To move forward, you had to make yourself useful, to have something of value to trade.

After walking for a while, Wang Zhi signaled for a break to rest and eat. It had been a day since they last slept, and they were starting to feel exhausted.

While eating a biscuit, Wang Zhi suddenly felt a sense of being watched.

He immediately stood up, nervously scanning his surroundings. The feeling was unsettling.

“What’s wrong, Wang Zhi?” Lao He asked when he saw Wang Zhi looking around anxiously.

“This place doesn’t feel right. Move quickly! Now!” Wang Zhi said through his radio, then quickly urged the group to keep moving.

It was then that Wang Zhi realized they hadn’t encountered any zombies along the way. That strange feeling surely meant there was something wrong nearby.
