“Watch your step! There might still be some undead that aren’t dead yet,” Wang Zhi warned as he looked at the bodies scattered across the tracks.
Wang Zhi stepped forward cautiously, observing his surroundings. If any zombies were still moving, he would not hesitate to put them down with a shot.
Stepping on the bloody, fleshy corpses of the zombies, Wang Zhi suddenly thought of the phrase a thousand bones wither beneath a general’s command.
The group climbed onto the train car. Inside, apart from a few skeletons, most of the zombies had already been killed. They continued forward until they reached the front of the car, where Su Muying continued her violent, sky-burning door-busting method.
Bang! Su Muying made a long rectangular opening, and Lao He gave the metal door a powerful kick, opening it wide. Once again, they saw the tracks.
On the other side of the tracks, zombies had clearly increased in number compared to before. After a few waves of battle, the group’s stamina had significantly declined. Wang Zhi decided it was time to rest and eat something.
When Wang Zhi removed his mask, the strong smell of blood almost made him vomit the food he had just eaten. He quickly drank some water to suppress the nausea.
“Captain Wang, how far are we?” Fatty asked, panting heavily.
“I don’t know! There are no reference points here, just keep moving forward and hope to reach the next station.”
“Ugh, I’m exhausted. Just thinking about the hordes of zombies at the next station… I…” Fatty said, biting into his biscuit with frustration.
Wang Zhi slowly reloaded his magazine, and once the others had rested a bit, he stood up and continued moving forward.
Two hours later, the group finally spotted a platform on the side. The glass on this platform was intact, but a large number of zombies were wandering around.
“Ah! I knew it, another batch!” Fatty seemed almost numb after so many fights.
Seeing the situation, Wang Zhi decided to use the same strategy they had used at the train earlier, having Su Muying cut a small gap in the glass. This would let the zombies come out one by one, taking advantage of the bottleneck.
However, reality didn’t match the ideal. The glass doors on the platform were much weaker than the train’s metal shell. After Wang Zhi killed five zombies, the glass door began to form a web of cracks.
“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! They’re coming all at once!” Fatty shouted.
“Fall back!” Lao He, who was covering them from the front, yelled.
Smash! The entire glass door was pushed open by the zombies. Over a hundred zombies fell onto the tracks, then quickly got back up and started charging toward the group.
Wang Zhi and the others fought and retreated. With over a hundred zombies attacking fiercely, anyone who fell behind would be swarmed by the zombies. The rest could only watch helplessly as that person got surrounded, and shooting wildly could cause friendly fire.
“Watch out for grenades!” Wang Zhi warned. He pulled the pin and threw a grenade into the crowd of zombies.
Boom! The explosion sent flesh and blood flying!
“Damn! Captain Wang, can you throw it farther? One of those pieces of body parts just exploded on my head!” Fatty shouted, immediately tossing the severed limb away.
“Stop complaining! Fall back quickly!” Wang Zhi shouted.
Even with the grenade, there were still around fifty zombies left. Wang Zhi couldn’t afford to slack off and continued retreating while fighting.
After another round of battle, the zombies had pushed them back by a little less than half a kilometer. The road in front was now completely covered with corpses.
“Is it over?” Zhang Ming asked, looking at the front.
“It’s over, it’s over! If it doesn’t end soon, I’ll be the one getting finished!” Fatty collapsed on the tracks, muttering.
“Take a rest for a while, we’ll go up later,” Lao He suggested.
“Are you tired, Liuli?” Wang Zhi sat down next to Liuli, watching her clumsily load bullets one by one.
“Tired!” Liuli replied succinctly.
“Haha, Liuli, now you’re regretting it, huh?” Fatty laughed from the side.
“I regret it.” Liuli said flatly.
“Ah, she has some spirit,” Wang Zhi commented.
“Stop teasing Fatty. Why don’t you go check on Su Muying?”
“No, no, I’ll check on Xiao Ming. Xiao Ming, how’s it going?”
“Hey, Xiao Ming, let me tell you something! That night, I actually dreamed about Diaochan! Damn, she was amazing! I’ll draw her for you someday, do you want to see it?”
“Seriously?”
“Ha! You think I’m lying to you?”
When Wang Zhi mentioned Su Muying, Fatty immediately shook his head and ran over to chat with Zhang Ming. Wang Zhi started to admire Zhang Ming—how could he keep up with Fatty’s endless talking?
Wang Zhi checked his remaining ammunition—over 500 rounds left. If the mission in the hospital went smoothly, these bullets would be enough for them to return.
“Let’s go up,” Wang Zhi said, standing up.
The group carefully moved toward the platform, hugging the walls. Wang Zhi jumped up onto the platform from the tracks.
The zombies on the platform were all lying on the tracks, so the group moved cautiously toward the elevator.
“Strange, the explosion just now didn’t attract any zombies from the upper floors,” Su Muying commented, looking at the empty platform.
“Could there be no zombies upstairs?” Lao He speculated.
“Let’s go up and check,” Wang Zhi said, heading toward the elevator.
Reaching the first floor, Wang Zhi saw only a few zombies trapped at the security checkpoint, aimlessly wandering around. There didn’t seem to be anything unusual.
This made Wang Zhi uneasy. Why were there so few zombies at this entrance? Could it be that they ran outside when it got dark?
After killing the few zombies trapped at the checkpoint, Wang Zhi moved cautiously toward the entrance. He turned off his night vision goggles and confirmed that it was indeed night outside. The snow had stopped, but the wind remained bitterly cold.
Wang Zhi moved aside and said, “It’s night outside now. We’ll rest here for the night and head out when the sun comes up.”
The group found a sheltered spot to sit down.
Wang Zhi took out a map and noted that if they exited this station and headed south for a short distance, they would reach Z Hospital.
Wang Zhi decided to send out a drone to scout the hospital’s surroundings. As he controlled the drone, he quickly located the target. Z Hospital had twelve floors, with a large parking lot outside. Just as Wang Zhi was about to move the drone inside the hospital, the screen suddenly flickered and went completely black!
“What! What happened?” Lao He asked nervously.
Wang Zhi was confident in his drone’s capabilities. This distance shouldn’t cause any issues, so why had the screen suddenly disappeared?
Wang Zhi tried controlling the drone again, but there was no response. Something was definitely wrong.
Wang Zhi pondered the possible causes and eventually concluded that the most likely explanation was that the drone had been destroyed.
“The hospital… It’s not haunted, is it?” Fatty whispered, trying to scare everyone.
“Damn it, Fatty, can you stop appearing out of nowhere? You scared the hell out of me!” Wang Zhi said, startled by Fatty’s sudden appearance.
