In the second class, Cheng Rushan and He Liang taught the students about first aid, covering how to handle emergencies like fires, cramps while swimming, and getting lost in the wild.
Cheng Rushan stood at the podium, his gaze sweeping over the students’ heads.
Every time he spoke, his eyes would often land on Jiang Lin, who was resting her chin on her hand and smiling at him.
His lips would unconsciously curve into a slight smile in response.
Jiang Lin thought he was so handsome, and his teaching style was straightforward and efficient, with no unnecessary talk.
His voice was clear, and he articulated every point without ambiguity.
He answered all the questions related to the class directly and effectively, showing no hesitation despite not having a university degree.
He Liang, standing beside him, was also impressed.
As a supporting instructor, he was nervous and had shaky legs.
He found it hard to speak, while Cheng was composed and relaxed.
However, the students seemed overly focused and eager, staring at Cheng’s face with anticipation!
“He’s already married! His wife is sitting right there!”
A bold female student from Class Two asked with a smile, “Teacher Cheng, you talked about dealing with emergencies, but what if we are attacked by bad people on the street or when we’re unprepared? Can you add a self-defense class for us women?”
The other students chimed in, “Yes, we want it! We boys need to learn too.”
Cheng Rushan gestured to He Liang to come forward.
He Liang stepped forward and stood straight, trying to appear as confident as possible.
Cheng Rushan patted him on the shoulder and said, “For those interested in learning, this is your instructor He. Discuss with him the schedule and location for the classes.”
He Liang immediately saluted the students and said, “Please, feel free to ask for my guidance.”
The students laughed, “Thank you, Instructor He. Will Teacher Cheng be joining us?”
Su Xingyun shouted, “Teacher Cheng needs to spend time with his wife and children.”
Cheng Rushan smiled and added, “I will personally oversee the final exams this semester. If anyone fails…”
“Ah—there’s going to be an exam!”
“We didn’t even attend the classes!” Cries of despair filled the room.
“Jiang Lin, help!” The students all bowed to Jiang Lin.
Jiang Lin: “……”
Cheng Rushan made a gesture, and the classroom instantly quieted down. “Everyone, don’t be nervous. Just review the knowledge points we’ve covered. With your intelligence, it will be no problem.
Also, each of you needs to submit a short paper, around 2,000 to 3,000 words. If your paper is well-written, you can skip the exam.”
“Ugh…” The students, being science majors, groaned at the thought of writing a paper.
Many felt that taking the exam would be better—after all, it wasn’t too difficult, and they could manage with their notes.
Others thought it was okay, just 3,000 words, no big deal.
They could ask their liberal arts friends for help and get it done quickly.
However, Cheng Rushan added, “You must write the paper yourself. If you get someone else to write it for you and we find out, you will definitely fail.
Of course, I will also inform the liberal arts students that anyone helping others with their papers will not only harm the other person’s grade but also their own.
Since you don’t have military training like the future students, your course credits will be higher, so please take this seriously.”
Oh no! The students were terrified—they couldn’t slack off anymore, as it was linked to their credits!
That’s so harsh!
“If you have any questions, you can consult with Officer He,” Cheng Rushan said, patting He Liang’s shoulder and giving him an encouraging look before dismissing the class.
Knowing Jiang Lin had no more classes, he helped her pack her bag. “Do you need to go to the hospital today?”
Jiang Lin was in good health.
Since she got pregnant, she had only been to the hospital once, and usually, she had Guo Yanqiu help with check-ups in the school’s clinic.
Now that she was six months pregnant and her belly was getting bigger, Guo Yanqiu suggested she get an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid and other conditions.
Regular check-ups were necessary to monitor fetal movement and heartbeats.
Actually, at this stage, regular check-ups were just routine advice from the doctor.
There was no real issue unless something was wrong.
However, getting an ultrasound required taking time off work and paying out of pocket, as it wasn’t covered by the medical insurance.
Jiang Lin nodded, “You can go back to your work. I can go by myself.”
It was just a matter of taking a bus.
In the countryside, women were still working in the fields, and even pregnant women had to continue working unless they were about to give birth.
Cheng Rushan replied, “It’s already arranged.”
As long as it’s not an urgent business trip or a meeting that only he can attend, Cheng Rushan could push other work aside.
Since he was already driving, he decided to take Jiang Lin to the military hospital.
With Jiang Lin having a student ID and Cheng Rushan holding a military officer ID, their medical visit wouldn’t cost them much.
On the way, Jiang Lin asked Cheng Rushan, “Are you really going to give us an exam?”
Cheng Rushan smiled, “Why, is my wife afraid of exams?”
Jiang Lin replied, “Students are always afraid of exams. Didn’t you fear them when you were in school?”
Cheng Rushan was silent for a moment, “I didn’t take them.”
Jiang Lin: “…”
“Then make it easier for us,” Jiang Lin said with a playful grin, trying to bribe him.
Cheng Rushan said, “Dear, I’m not in charge of setting the questions.” He simply didn’t have the time.
Jiang Lin’s eyes lit up, “How about I find a few classmates to help you with the questions?”
Cheng Rushan couldn’t help but ruffle her hair and teased, “I could ask Wen Sheng, Da Bao, and Xiao Bao to give it a try.”
The political office had dedicated administrative staff who handled writing the materials and setting the exam questions.
There was no need for students to create the questions themselves.
His wife’s idea was a bit too idealistic.
When they arrived at the hospital, Cheng Rushan told Jiang Lin to wait while he went to register and inquire.
He happened to run into Fang Chengxia.
Fang Chengxia had been away in the countryside for a year and had returned to the hospital earlier this year.
She appeared much calmer and more gentle, though her eyes held a hint of melancholy.
She greeted Cheng Rushan and, upon learning he was there with Jiang Lin for an examination, offered to help arrange for a doctor.
“Go ahead, get the B-ultrasound done first and then visit the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient department,” her voice was very soothing, making one feel naturally relaxed.
Jiang Lin thanked her and then went with Cheng Rushan to the B-ultrasound room.
The B-ultrasound machine at that time was quite different from the modern ones; the screen was very small, only showing black and white images with limited details, mainly to check the size of the fetus and the amniotic fluid.
After a brief chat with the B-ultrasound technician, Jiang Lin lay down, but the baby wasn’t cooperating.
Doctor: “He’s a bit shy, keeping his back turned, so I can’t see.”
Jiang Lin: “……”
He’s shy? She figured he might be tired.
During class, he was quite lively listening to Cheng Rushan speak.
“Doctor, can you check if it’s one baby or two?”
Doctor: “Do you have a history of twins in your family?” After checking, she said, “It’s one baby.”
Even if the baby was facing away, it was unlikely to completely hide another baby. Seeing one meant there was only one baby.
Jiang Lin could also tell from the movements—only one spot was active, not two, indicating a single baby.
Cheng Rushan was relieved to hear it was just one baby.
When Jiang Lin had Da Bao and Xiao Bao, he wasn’t around.
He had heard from Doctor Lan that carrying twins can be very tough and prone to complications, especially in the later stages.
With one baby, at least she wouldn’t have it as hard.
The doctor turned to Cheng Rushan and asked, “Does the dad prefer a boy or a girl?”
Cheng Rushan: “We already have two boys.”
“Ha ha, so you’re hoping for a girl! It’s great to have both sons and daughters. Oh, this baby is not cooperating at all, always turning away. Maybe it’s sleeping soundly.” The ultrasound wasn’t very clear anyway, and since the baby was facing away, the doctor couldn’t see if it was a boy or girl.
After about 20 minutes, the doctor finished and said, “The amniotic fluid is good, and the baby’s size is normal. But since the baby isn’t cooperating, we can’t tell if it’s a boy or girl.”
At this stage, and given that the ultrasound wasn’t very clear, they typically could tell the baby’s gender, but with the baby not cooperating, it wasn’t possible.
Jiang Lin and Cheng Rushan thanked the doctor, and Cheng Rushan took the ultrasound report to consult with an obstetrician.
The obstetrician reviewed it and found no issues, and gave Jiang Lin advice on counting fetal movements and other precautions.
If anything abnormal occurred, she should come to the hospital for further checks.
Cheng Rushan also asked about any special dietary needs.
The doctor thought for a moment and said, “Nothing special. Just eat normally.”
At this point, they had finished their meal, and the doctor didn’t have any special dietary restrictions to mention.
When leaving, Jiang Lin went to thank Fang Chengxia.
Fang Chengxia: “Everything okay?”
Jiang Lin: “Yes, thank you, Doctor Fang.”
Fang Chengxia nodded and thought about asking about her brother, Fang Chengguang, but decided not to since he was busy with drills in the capital.
Jiang Lin had classes in the afternoon, so Cheng Rushan took her back and they ate at the school cafeteria.
While getting food, she asked another staff member, “Is Teacher Tian not helping out here anymore?”
The staff member replied with a smile, “He took on another job, leading students to do some drawing.”
Jiang Lin smiled and didn’t ask further.
She and Cheng Rushan had their meal.
Cheng Rushan said to her, “When the weather gets warmer and your belly grows bigger, it will be quite uncomfortable. Do you want to take a leave then? You can arrange to make up classes with your classmates.”
He had heard that by seven months, the belly grows quickly, and taking the bus might become very uncomfortable.
Jiang Lin didn’t want to be overly delicate. “I’ll wait until eight months to take a leave. It’s still quite manageable now.”
“Then I’ll try to arrange my schedule to pick you up,” Cheng Rushan said.
If he was unavailable, he would ask He Liang to help, since He Liang, now Officer He, was often around the campus.
