Chapter 58
That morning, Tao Sheng and Xiao Ming couldn’t eat the snacks given by the emperor because breakfast was so elaborate.
Today was a day off for the Imperial College, so Tao Sheng didn’t have to go to work at the government office. Instead, she brought home a fancy four-layer cloisonné eight-treasure food box intact.
Tao Sheng soon realized another advantage of being favored by the emperor: she didn’t have to go in person to get her travel permit. When she mentioned it to someone she knew in the relevant department, they helped her quickly without her needing to run errands.
Once the pass was ready, she handed it to Mr. Wei.
Mr. Wei took the pass and left early in the morning to pick up the Luo couple.
When Tao Sheng returned home, she saw her parents, Luo Xiu and Su Wan, whom she hadn’t seen for six years, already sitting in the living room.
Seeing their familiar faces surprised her for a moment, then she ran into her mother’s arms and hugged her tightly.
When Tao Sheng first learned about her time travel, she was unprepared to stay in this world. It was her parents who gave her the warmest and most caring support, encouraging her to live well.
Though the Luo family wasn’t as wealthy as the aristocratic families in Beijing, they were among the richest families in Qin County. After being childless for many years, they adopted her and treated her like a treasure, wanting to give her the best within their means.
Luo Xiu, her father, was often busy but always thought of his daughter. When he returned from business trips, he would bring back beautiful clothes and jewels for her and her mother.
Su Wan, her mother, was gentle and caring. She felt sorry for Tao Sheng, who was sensible beyond her years, and took great care of her, showering her with love.
Tao Sheng truly saw them as her parents.
After the mother and daughter hugged and cried, Mr. Wei, who played a significant role in this story, explained what had happened.
Six years ago, during one winter, the Luo couple had an accident while traveling to Luo Xiu’s hometown. The driver, panicking during a dangerous moment, abandoned the car, causing them to fall off a cliff.
Fortunately, the crash site was not deadly; the car broke apart, protecting them from serious injury.
Luo Xiu was injured badly and fell unconscious for a long time. While he was out, Su Wan found a wooden house nearby. She managed to care for him there, relying on help from villagers and wild fruits and vegetables.
During their recovery, war broke out between Great Zhou and the Dai Kingdom, and the couple was captured by the enemy, forced into hard labor and unable to return home.
Eventually, after a ceasefire and the countries reestablished relations, Mr. Wei happened to pass by and recognized them. With a bit of silver, he redeemed them and brought them back to the capital.
Tao Sheng reflected on her past reading novels where only the main character survived incredible events. She never expected her parents would have such a remarkable story.
This is how Mr. Wei saved her parents while traveling.
Tao Sheng thanked Mr. Wei again.
In the original story, Shen Taosheng did not learn the zither from Mr. Wei as a child. Thus, Mr. Wei wouldn’t know the Luo couple. Even if he met them during his travels, he would treat them as strangers and wouldn’t bring them back to Beijing, so the original story didn’t mention them again.
I don’t know if the original person who left the capital will reunite with their adoptive parents in a foreign country and live a happy life away from the protagonist’s influence.
Now that everything has been revealed, Su Wan glanced at her husband and said to Tao Sheng hesitantly, “Ah Sheng, we actually have one more thing to tell you.”
Tao Sheng, still overwhelmed by her parents’ return, felt she wouldn’t experience anything stranger today: “Mom, just tell me what you want.”
“When I was in the capital of Dai State, I helped a famous local doctor translate several medical books because I knew Chinese. To thank me, the doctor treated your father and me with a special local herb… We later had a pair of children, a boy and a girl.”
In the past, Luo Xiu and Su Wan had been married for a long time but had no children, yet their relationship was very good. Luo Xiu never agreed to marry into the clan, so he adopted Tao Sheng.
Tao Sheng could never have imagined that her parents, who were not even mentioned in the original text, would come back and bring a younger brother and sister with them.
This can be considered a blessing in disguise.
Tao Sheng was surprised and said, “Really? Why didn’t mother bring my younger brother and sister here to meet me?”
“The kids are making a fuss.” Su Wan smiled apologetically. “Besides, we’ve heard from Mr. Wei about your current family situation. We learned that this is the house that the emperor personally bestowed on Xiaobai. It’s not appropriate to let the two children come over and make a fuss at this time, so we let them stay in the inn.”
Su Wan figured that this was the residence bestowed upon Ji Yanming by the emperor, and Su Jia and Tao Sheng logically had no say in the matter. It would be impolite to bring such young children to the house without informing anyone in advance.
Su Wan didn’t want to cause trouble for Tao Sheng right after they returned.
As they were talking, Ji Yanming also walked in.
After just a few days of getting along, Mr. Wei had already made this young man a close friend. When he saw Ji Yanming, he waved happily: “Xiao Ji, you’re back? You came back earlier than usual today.”
Ji Yanming also returned early after hearing the news. He first bowed to Mr. Wei and then bowed deeply to his aunt and uncle whom he had not seen for a long time.
Ji Yanming hadn’t seen his aunt for a long time, almost as long as Tao Sheng. The day before yesterday, he heard Tao Sheng mention that her parents were still alive and had been brought back to the capital by Mr. Wei. He found it incredible.
As an aunt, Su Wan naturally liked her handsome nephew.
She walked forward happily, leaned over, and helped him up: “Xiaobai has grown up so much! We are all a family; there is no need to be so formal. We also want to thank you for helping take care of Tao Sheng over the years.”
Ji Yanming felt something was wrong when he heard this.
