Chapter 66: Seems Like It’s Bleeding
A week later, Qin Mohuai and Xia Yuan set off to attend Old Master Wei’s equestrian birthday banquet.
During this time, Xia Yuan had been eating well, showing no signs of morning sickness. It seemed her issue was just irregular menstruation, unrelated to pregnancy.
At Tianxiang Equestrian Club.
Luxury cars drove into the underground parking lot one after another. If the venue hadn’t been reserved, there wouldn’t have been enough parking spaces.
As Xia Yuan got out of the car, she spotted Ouyang Jing and Ning Kou in the distance, and the two also noticed her.
Ning Kou wanted to approach Xia Yuan, but Ouyang Jing held her back.
“Are you stupid? You’re going to cause trouble for Xia Yuan in front of President Qin?”
Ning Kou retorted, “I wasn’t planning on causing trouble. I just wanted to ask where she learned to play dice.”
Ouyang Jing stared at her calmly. “Playing dice is fine for fun, but it’s never going to be classy. Don’t waste too much effort on it.”
Ning Kou, unwilling to concede, responded, “Playing dice isn’t classy, but being in showbiz like Cousin is?”
Ouyang Jing was momentarily speechless, clearly not expecting Ning Kou to talk back.
Ning Jiale stepped out of a nearby sports car. “Gambling with dice is bad, but acting isn’t illegal, so how is it not classy?”
“Who made you the judge?”
Ning Kou glared at Ning Jiale and stormed off, leaving the two behind.
When Xia Yuan saw Ning Jiale, she squinted and pulled out her phone to text Xia Yuze.
[Stay away from Ning Jiale from now on, or don’t bother coming home!]
A while later, Xia Yuze replied: [Huh? What’s wrong with him? Curious Puppy wants to know.jpg]
While Xia Yuan was socializing alongside Qin Mohuai, she met several bigwigs: a jewelry company CEO, a bank president’s wife, a pharmaceutical company president…
Qin Mohuai wrapped his arm around her waist. “If you’re tired, we can take a break.”
Xia Yuan responded, “I’m fine.”
Qin Mohuai smiled, “Then let me introduce you to today’s birthday star, Wei Changhong, the grandfather of Wei Xiao and Wei Yunzhou. He’s a lively old man who loves horse breeding. He founded Tianxiang Equestrian Club himself. Don’t be nervous when you meet him, he’s very kind to the younger generation.”
Old Master Wei had a few horses in a luxurious stable at the club.
About a dozen bodyguards in black were scattered around the area, their different outfits suggesting multiple important figures were present.
Qin Mohuai added, “Grandpa is here too.”
When Xia Yuan entered, she saw Old Master Qin. Next to him was a slightly chubby old man with a smile like Maitreya Buddha—this had to be Old Master Wei.
Qin Mohuai greeted, “Grandpa Wei, I’ve brought my wife, Xia Yuan, to wish you a happy birthday. May you live as long as the southern mountains.”
Xia Yuan followed up with a lucky phrase of her own.
Old Master Qin gave Qin Mohuai a glance, then looked at Xia Yuan, his face darkening as he let out an unhappy grunt.
Old Master Wei, who had heard a bit about Qin Mohuai’s romantic entanglements, thought to himself that if his kids were as accomplished as Qin Mohuai and Qin Jingye, he wouldn’t care who they married.
“Old Qin, your legs were injured when you were young, weren’t they? I can tell from the way you walk. Do you use a wheelchair at home?”
“You’re not even in a wheelchair, how could I be?” Old Master Qin retorted, his pride unshaken even in his old age.
Old Master Wei chuckled, unbothered by the outburst. “Xiao Huai, you’re not young anymore. When do you plan on having children?”
This seemed to be a standard topic among the elders.
Before Qin Mohuai could respond, Old Master Qin let out a series of cold laughs. “I’d say it’ll happen on the twelfth of never.”
Xia Yuan simply couldn’t have children.
If it weren’t for saving face for his grandson, he would’ve interrogated Xia Yuan right then, questioning what her true intentions were in marrying Qin Mohuai.
Qin Mohuai’s eyes flashed with coldness. “I don’t like kids. The sound of a child crying just irritates me.”
Old Master Wei sighed. “Does your wife feel the same way?”
The ball was now in Xia Yuan’s court.
Xia Yuan responded gracefully, “I’d like to have a child, but that depends on fate.”
Old Master Qin scoffed internally: What an act!
Old Master Wei could sense the tension brewing between the group and quickly tried to change the subject. “Everyone, come take a look at this horse. It’s a warmblood imported from the Netherlands, with a pure bloodline. Its parents and ancestors all had calm temperaments.”
Unfortunately, he could no longer ride due to his weight.
Xia Yuan gazed at the white warmblood horse, lost in thought. She didn’t have the money or time to learn how to ride, but she remembered a wealthy classmate whose family owned a horse ranch. That classmate had invited a few close friends to the ranch one summer, and Xia Yuan had been among them.
Initially, Xia Yuan wanted to use the summer break to earn some extra money and didn’t plan on going. However, her grandmother insisted, even threatening not to take her medicine unless Xia Yuan agreed.
Xia Yuan overheard the stable workers mentioning they made ten thousand yuan a month. Her eyes lit up at the opportunity. She approached her rich classmate and asked if she could work at the ranch during the summer, offering to do even the hardest and dirtiest jobs.
For someone poor, pride was a luxury, and Xia Yuan was willing to let it go. That summer, she earned twenty thousand yuan and learned how to care for and ride horses.
Qin Mohuai noticed her staring at the Dutch warmblood and asked, “Do you like it?”
Xia Yuan nodded.
Besides him, she rarely showed strong interest in anything, so Qin Mohuai began considering purchasing the horse for her.
“Grandpa Wei, can I buy this horse?” His question drew the attention of both elders.
Old Master Wei responded, “Xiao Huai, if you like it, just take it. No need to talk about buying and selling.”
Qin Mohuai shook his head. “It’s not for me. Yuan likes it, and her birthday is coming up. I want to give it to her as a gift.”
Old Master Wei chuckled, “You really dote on your wife.”
Old Master Qin interjected sarcastically, “Horses are spiritual creatures. Not everyone can ride them.”
Just as Qin Mohuai was about to respond, Xia Yuan tugged at his sleeve. “Let’s forget about it. I don’t feel like riding right now.”
“Yuan, you can have anything you want. If I can’t get it for you, it just means I’m not capable.”
Even though the man was his grandfather, Qin Mohuai wasn’t going to let Xia Yuan endure any disrespect in front of him. He had married her to protect her, not to let her suffer.
Xia Yuan whispered, “Just promise me you’ll get me another horse. I’m sure there are many better ones.”
True.
Qin Mohuai began thinking about what kind of horse he should gift her when suddenly, they heard the trainer shouting, “Nick! Calm down! Nick’s agitated—oh my god!”
Nick had broken through the fence, charging wildly toward the crowd, his hooves pounding the ground.
In the chaos, the bodyguards hurriedly escorted Old Master Wei to safety. Xia Yuan, standing near Old Master Qin, quickly pulled him aside.
The trainer apologized profusely as he chased after Nick. With such esteemed guests present, losing his job would be the least of his worries if anyone were injured.
Old Master Qin was taken aback that Xia Yuan had pulled him out of danger. The old man huffed arrogantly and shook off her hand.
Xia Yuan, unsteady on her feet, didn’t expect him to push her away. She staggered backward, and although Qin Mohuai caught her just in time, her back still hit the iron railing.
Her face instantly turned pale as a sharp, excruciating pain radiated through her body. It wasn’t her back that hurt—it was her abdomen.
It felt like something warm was flowing down her leg.
The system had said she wouldn’t have another period, so what was this blood?
“Qin Mohuai, the baby…”
Qin Mohuai’s pupils constricted, his expression frozen in a terrifying calm. He scooped Xia Yuan into his arms and swiftly strode toward the exit.
“Get every doctor in the club here now!”
