Chapter 19 Toad Yawns
Hu Guifen and the others arrived and heard Sun Honghua’s foul language. They were all amused. Gu Shengli walked in last and said, “What are these two toads doing yawning in the middle of the night? Xiaolan, quickly find something to stuff their mouths with. Don’t let them suffocate us.” If it weren’t for wanting everyone to hear how foul-mouthed the couple was, Qian Xiaolan would have already stuffed their mouths. Now that the village chief had spoken, she immediately took a dirty rag and stuffed it into their mouths. The world was finally quiet.
Without Qian Xiaolan needing to explain, everyone knew what had happened. Qian Changcai and his wife had clearly set their sights on the money Qian Xiaolan had. Gu Shengli was furious. He walked up to the couple on the ground and pointed at them, scolding, “Qian Changcai, Sun Honghua, you two always have so much to say. Your own house was emptied, and you’re already thinking of stealing from Xiaolan. Are you going to build a farm on a deserted island or go to a farm in the northwest to be reformed?” Qian Changcai and Sun Honghua shook their heads repeatedly in fear.
A deserted island was a place where you couldn’t return to the mainland for half a year. You were also constantly exposed to the sea breeze, which could peel your skin off. The food was terrible, too. It was either salted fish or salted sauce. It was even harder to eat fresh vegetables and meat than at home. The northwest was even scarier. They heard it was a barren and cold place with nothing. They didn’t want to suffer there. Seeing the couple shaking their heads, Gu Shengli paced back and forth in frustration, “What are you two trying to do? Don’t think that Xiaolan lived in your house for a few years and act like you did her a great favor. If you hadn’t run to Xiaolan and said you would take her in, maybe she would have been better off than living with you.
Don’t be so stubborn and think that Xiaolan emptied your house. The police said that the erased traces around the area indicate a very experienced thief, and it couldn’t possibly have been Xiaolan.” … Gu Shengli went on and on, giving them a heartfelt lecture. Then, he felt that something was wrong. He turned around and saw that everyone was surrounding the couple, patting and hitting them. He frowned, “What’s going on?” Qian Xiaolan calmly said, “They were climbing my wall, and the glass shards cut their hands. When they fell, they landed on the fallen glass shards. They probably fainted from blood loss.” Gu Shengli was silent for a moment before slowly saying, “Serves them right!” After Gu Shengli had someone carry Sun Honghua and Qian Changcai to the clinic, everyone went home. After they left, Qian Xiaolan locked the door and went into the space to sleep. Perhaps because of Sun Honghua and her husband, she had only just fallen asleep when she had a dream.
She dreamed of her childhood. One night, she was hungry in the middle of the night and went to the kitchen to find something to eat. She saw a figure jumping from the wall into the courtyard. She was startled and quietly looked out the kitchen window. Then, she saw Wang Juhua come out of the room and pull the man into the room. Then, some muffled strange sounds came from the room. That day, Qian Changfu was sent by the village chief to work elsewhere and didn’t come back. Later, this happened several times. The original owner discovered it each time, but she was too young and afraid of being beaten, so she didn’t dare to tell Qian Changfu.
Qian Xiaolan sat up abruptly. She remembered who that man was. That figure was clearly that dog, Qian Changcai! Tsk tsk, he was actually playing around with his sister-in-law. He truly lived up to his name. It seemed that the child Wang Juhua had aborted might not have been Qian Changfu’s. Qian Xiaolan pondered for a moment, then lay back down and fell asleep.
With this discovery, she could find a breakthrough to investigate Qian Changcai’s unusual behavior the other day. She slept soundly until dawn. Qian Xiaolan went to work, feeling refreshed. That morning, everyone’s conversation revolved around her and Sun Honghua and her husband. It was said that Sun Honghua and Qian Changcai woke up early in the morning and demanded compensation from her.
They were scolded by the village chief and finally calmed down. It was said that there was a particularly large piece of glass where Qian Changcai fell. It had cut his waist, leaving a large gash. His hands were also cut by the glass on the wall, leaving them bloody and raw. One of his feet was also sprained. Sun Honghua’s thigh was lying directly on three pieces of glass. The glass was embedded too deep, and she couldn’t move her leg. The couple was worse off than the other. Qian Xiaolan was relieved. As for the people who secretly said she was cold-hearted and ruthless, she didn’t care for now. She would settle the score with them all at once.
After work at noon, to witness for herself whether the couple was as miserable as everyone said, she went to the clinic to take a look and gave them two cute scorpions. After work in the afternoon, someone said that Sun Honghua and Qian Changcai had a big fight in the clinic at noon. When they turned around, a scorpion stung Qian Changcai’s waist, causing it to swell. He was lucky that he crushed one of the scorpions, otherwise, it would have been worse. Qian Xiaolan smiled and worked even harder. When she finished her work early, she went into the mountains after work, under everyone’s envious and jealous eyes. She had been reading books in the space for a few days, and today she was going to put her knowledge into practice.
She had already explored the mountains near her home. When she went into the mountains again, she squatted down and started working, her eyes shining. She found pennywort, plantain, shepherd’s purse, violet, abutilon, foxtail grass, cocklebur, mugwort, nightshade… These herbs had different effects: some were for clearing heat and detoxifying, some for dispersing stasis and reducing swelling, and some for warming the meridians, dispelling wind, and stopping bleeding… These were too common, so she collected a little of each and put them in the space.
People often came to the outer edge of the mountains to chop wood, dig wild vegetables, or hunt. There was nothing good left there, so she went deeper into the mountains. They said that there were wolf packs and tigers in the deep mountains. If you were unlucky, you could even encounter wild boars on the outskirts. She didn’t know if it was true or not. Anyway, now that she had the space, if she really encountered them, she could hide in the space and wouldn’t have to be afraid. With this in mind, Qian Xiaolan went further and further, climbing higher and higher. Finally, she saw a few deep red Ganoderma lucidum on a tree stump and stopped.
Ganoderma lucidum, also known as red Ganoderma lucidum, is the most precious and rare type of Ganoderma lucidum. It has the effects of tonifying the body, strengthening the immune system, and enhancing the body’s resistance. It also has the effects of tonifying Qi, calming the mind, relieving cough, and calming asthma.
Qian Xiaolan didn’t expect that she really had the fate to find treasure and get rich in the mountains. She happily put all three Ganoderma lucidum in the space. Just then, her ears twitched. She carefully walked towards the source of the sound.
