Chapter 71 Midnight Break-in
Qian Xiaolan saw that the two books her mother had sent her were flipped through again and again, and the worry in her eyes was hard to hide. She had originally wanted to send some more medicinal herbs to Jing City, but now it seemed she couldn’t for the time being.
The tense atmosphere on the island continued for another three days. That night, Qian Xiaolan had been studying in her space for a long time, remembering that it might rain tonight and the kitchen window was still open, she ran out to close it. Just as she was about to go back to her room, she suddenly heard a faint sound of footsteps coming from outside. Qian Xiaolan froze, remembering the tense atmosphere on the island these past few days. She gently walked over and closed the kitchen door, then grabbed a wooden stick, hid behind the door, and looked out.
The footsteps were getting closer and closer to her house. Suddenly, a figure flipped over the low wall of her house and landed in the courtyard. Qian Xiaolan gripped the wooden stick, watching the sneaky figure quickly approach her, and couldn’t help but curse under her breath. She tensed up, and when the person pushed the door open, she quickly moved to the side, and at the same time, the wooden stick in her hand struck out fiercely.
“Ugh,” the wooden stick hit the back of the neck, the person only had time to let out a muffled groan before falling to the ground. Qian Xiaolan turned on her flashlight, shining it in his eyes for a while to make sure he was really unconscious, then tied him up with a rope and reached out to search his body for anything he might be hiding.
This man’s appearance was unremarkable, it was impossible to tell if he was good or bad, but the military district was nearby, and he had climbed over the wall in the middle of the night, which showed that he wasn’t a good person. Qian Xiaolan pulled out a wad of ten-yuan bills from his left pocket, about seventy or eighty yuan, and took it without hesitation. She then pulled out a dagger from his right pocket, it was gleaming and sharp, which she also took. Hmm, his inner pocket actually had a big weapon—a small pistol. This was definitely not something they had in their country. Qian Xiaolan didn’t dare to take it, so she put it aside. In his left pants pocket, there was a pack of cigarettes and a box of matches, and in his right pocket, there were a few tickets.
Qian Xiaolan was about to search further down when she heard a lot of urgent footsteps outside. She stood up and looked out, seeing a group of people in white running past, she immediately raised her voice, “Comrades, there’s something going on here!” The small group of navy soldiers who were passing by stopped in their tracks and immediately turned around and ran towards her.
Qian Xiaolan led them into the kitchen and pointed at the man she had tied up, “I was sleeping and remembered that it might rain tonight, and the kitchen window wasn’t closed, so I ran out to close it. I had just closed the window when I saw this person sneaking over the wall, and then I knocked him unconscious.”
Wang Chao recognized Qian Xiaolan, checked the man’s condition, picked up the pistol on the ground, and smiled and asked Qian Xiaolan, “Captain Gu said Sister-in-law knows martial arts?” Qian Xiaolan glanced at him and nodded, “I learned it from my adoptive father and grandfather since I was a child.” The other soldiers heard their conversation and realized. So she knew martial arts, no wonder she could hit so accurately.
Wang Chao took a step forward and saluted Qian Xiaolan, “Sister-in-law, hello, thank you for helping to catch the spy. But according to procedure, we need you to come with us and make a statement. Sister-in-law, please rest assured, we won’t make things difficult for you, just tell us what happened.”
Qian Xiaolan knew this was standard procedure, but thinking about the things she had just looted, she felt a little bit of heartache and took out the money and the dagger. “I found this in his pockets, I’ll give it back to you.” Wang Chao glanced at the money and tickets, didn’t take them, and smiled, “This money and tickets are for you to calm down. The dagger is not from our country, it’s not suitable for you to use, we’ll take it back first. If you really like it, tomorrow I’ll ask Captain Gu to get you a better one.”
Qian Xiaolan was satisfied that she could keep the money and tickets. To be honest, she didn’t lack daggers. There was a box of various weapons in the boxes she had collected in the mountains, but those things were antiques, and she didn’t want to use them.
Qian Xiaolan changed her clothes and went with them to the base. At that moment, Gu Yanqing was also returning to the base with his men after catching two spies on another island. The two groups met at the gate of the base, Gu Yanqing saw Qian Xiaolan was there and his face changed instantly. “Wife, what are you doing here so late? What happened?” He said, ignoring the many gazes, and pulled Qian Xiaolan to him to examine her.
Qian Xiaolan was even more direct, she grabbed his wrist, checked his pulse, and only let go when she was sure he was fine. Wang Chao saw this and coughed lightly, explaining, “Captain Gu, don’t worry, Sister-in-law is fine. She caught the spy we’ve been chasing for a long time.” “Okay, I understand.” Gu Yanqing took a deep breath, pulled Qian Xiaolan, and walked towards the base. The people behind them looked at each other and smiled, following them.
Gu Yanqing settled Qian Xiaolan in an empty room, poured her some hot water, told her not to worry, and said she could tell him anything later, then he rushed off to deal with work. After a whole night of tossing and turning, Qian Xiaolan was really tired, she drank two sips of water and fell asleep on the table. When Wang Chao had some time and brought people over to take Qian Xiaolan’s statement, he saw her sleeping and felt a little reluctant to wake her up. He was thinking about whether to come back later to ask questions when Qian Xiaolan woke up after hearing the noise. Her alertness made Wang Chao sigh, what a good recruit. Why did she become a doctor?
Qian Xiaolan pinched her brow and asked softly, “Sergeant Wang, are you going to ask me questions now?” Wang Chao smiled apologetically at her, pulled up the chair in front of her and sat down, then began to ask questions. Qian Xiaolan repeated the details of the night twice, Wang Chao checked and confirmed that there were no discrepancies, and then Qian Xiaolan was free to go. But it was too late now, so Wang Chao asked her to continue resting here, and he would go and see if Gu Yanqing was done.
Qian Xiaolan had just closed her eyes for a moment, and now she wasn’t sleepy, she wanted to go out for a walk, but she was worried about the military base and didn’t want to wander around. She had to give up the idea and continue to close her eyes and rest, but in fact, her consciousness went into the space and she opened her laptop to watch medical videos.
When Gu Yanqing finished his work and came over, he saw her sleeping on the table and felt heartbroken. He didn’t wake Qian Xiaolan up, he gently walked over, picked her up horizontally, and carried her to his single dormitory. On the way, he met people who wanted to greet him, but he just gave them a look, and they didn’t dare to speak again.
After that night, Gu Yanqing’s reputation for being a doting husband spread throughout the base. This made a certain woman in the art troupe so jealous that she wanted to meet Qian Xiaolan at all costs, but she never found the opportunity. Until one time, she finally saw her, but she wished she could just jump into the sea and swim away.
Speaking of the present, Qian Xiaolan heard footsteps and knew that Gu Yanqing had finished his work and had come to find her. She wanted to tease him, so she kept her eyes closed, but this man didn’t say anything and just picked her up. She only remembered that she curled her lips, hugged his waist, and fell asleep.
When she woke up again, it was already bright outside. There was no one beside her, she heard the loud slogans outside and slapped her forehead in annoyance.
