Chapter 116: A Big Drama

Early the next morning, the Sun family staged another big drama in Qingshan Village. It was the first of the month, and it was supposed to be Shitou’s turn to stay at Sun Baorong’s house, the third eldest son of the Sun family. However, Sun family’s third wife, Yao Honghong, insisted she couldn’t take over.

Kong Yuru said, “Today is the first, it’s supposed to be your turn. Why can’t you take care of him?”

Yao Honghong sneered, “Second sister-in-law, how can you say such things with a straight face?”

Kong Yuru retorted, “Our Shengyuan also burned his arm. It’s not that I don’t want to take care of that wild—child Shitou, it’s just that we can’t handle it.” She almost let slip, yelling about the wild child in front of everyone in the village.

Yao Honghong mocked, “Don’t talk about those nice words. Shitou is still in the health center now. He was injured and in the second room. It was you who injured him personally. If I take over, he must be intact. Otherwise, who will pay for his medical expenses?”

The villagers could understand Yao Honghong’s point of view. After all, once they took over, it meant medical expenses and the hassle of delivering meals to the health center, which could disrupt their routines.

Early in the morning, Luo Qiao cooked porridge, made sugar triangles, prepared a cucumber salad, and fried two eggs, all of which she delivered to Shitou.

Watching Shitou finish his meal, Luo Qiao asked, “Shitou, how do you feel today?”

Shitou replied, “It’s not as painful as yesterday.”

Luo Qiao nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll come back at noon to bring you lunch. As for the medicine, I’ll apply it for you tonight.”

Shitou nodded in response, “Thank you, Sister Luo Qiao. Please go back quickly and don’t be late for work.”

After Luo Qiao saw off Lu Yichen last night, she returned to her room and entered the space, soaking her feet in the well water before resting for the night. When she woke up in the morning and tested her feet, they weren’t as sore as the previous night.

When Luo Qiao came out to deliver the meal, she happened to meet a fellow villager from the neighboring village who was riding his bicycle back to the city for work and gave her a ride to the commune entrance.

Now walking back to the village, she still felt some discomfort in her feet and hoped it wouldn’t worsen on the way back.

While she was looking down at her feet, she heard some movement ahead. When she looked up, she saw Lu Yichen coming over towards her on his bicycle, with a knowing expression on his face, which made Luo Qiao feel a bit guilty.

She quickly greeted him, “Brother Lu, where are you heading?”

Lu Yichen got off his bike and turned it around, saying, “Come on, I’ll take you back to the village.”

Luo Qiao asked, “Are you sure it won’t delay you?”

Lu Yichen replied, “What do you think? Your foot isn’t healing because you’re being stubborn. You understand medicine, so why act so recklessly?”

Luo Qiao knew that this time Lu Yichen was genuinely angry. She softly tried to explain, “If I didn’t come to deliver the meal, Shitou would go hungry. Besides, I got a ride from a villager from the neighboring village on his bicycle, really.”

Lu Yichen said, “Then why didn’t you let me take you to the health center? It’s just a few hundred meters from the commune entrance. If your foot gets worse, who are you counting on to take care of you?”

Taking a deep breath, Luo Qiao stuttered, “I-I, I can’t keep bothering you.”

Lu Yichen replied, “At noon, I’ll go deliver lunch to Shitou. You just need to prepare for it. Since you delayed me this morning, consider it compensation for lunch.”

Luo Qiao asked, “Don’t you usually not come back to the village at noon?”

Lu Yichen couldn’t help but laugh at this little girl’s antics. Despite thinking for her sake, she didn’t seem appreciative.

Without saying another word, he rode his bike towards the village with a stern expression.

As they neared the village entrance, Lu Yichen asked Luo Qiao to get off and return on her own while he didn’t go through the bridge but directly crossed the river and headed for the tractor shed via a small path.
