Chapter 176: Dismissal

Lu Yichen and Shitou entered the courtyard. Shitou said, “Sister Luo Qiao, I just saw my second uncle and them coming back.”

Luo Qiao replied, “They should be back. They’ve been staying at the city hospital for quite a few days.”

After the Sun family’s second wife and their family returned, Mrs. Sun looked at the scar on her grandson’s arm and said with distress, “My Shengyuan has suffered.”

When Kong Yuru returned, she sat listlessly. Mrs. Sun asked, “How much money did this trip cost?”

Sun Baoqing said, “It cost quite a bit.”

Mrs. Sun, unhappy with her second son’s indifferent attitude, said, “How much exactly is ‘quite a bit’?”

Sun Baoqing replied, “Around over a hundred.”

Kong Yuru sighed, “Shengyuan has emptied out our family’s savings this time. How are we going to live from now on?”

Mrs. Sun became even more furious, “Who can we blame for this? Isn’t it all because of your own doings? You still have the nerve to speak, not only tarnishing the Sun family’s reputation but also causing Shengyuan to suffer so much.”

After hearing her mother-in-law’s words, Kong Yuru kept her head down and dared not speak again. Instead, she thought to herself that it was all that bastard’s fault; otherwise, otherwise she wouldn’t have acted so impulsively.

Sun Baoqing said, “The matter is over, let’s not bring it up again.”

Mrs. Sun retorted, “You do wrong and don’t want it mentioned? Hmph, you live your life, I, your mother, can’t control that.”

Luo Qiao also learned from village gossip that Sun Shengyuan spent all of the money allocated by Shitou’s mother while he was staying at the city hospital and barely managing to save Shitou’s arm.

Luo Qiao thought to herself, this is just retribution.

But retribution didn’t stop there. When Sun Baoqing went to work at the county office for the second time, the director informed him that he was fired because he had taken too much leave. The position couldn’t be left vacant for so long, so they assigned it to someone else.

He wanted to confront the leaders in the factory, but before he reached their office, he overheard several staff members talking about him, saying he had gotten his job through trading his sister-in-law’s life, and how his wife scalded their only young nephew with freshly boiled soup, and leaving him severely injured.

What’s worse, they didn’t even provide medical treatment. Sun Baoqing and his brothers embezzled their sister’s compensation and handed the young nephew over to someone else to raise, an act that was simply morally unconscionable.

Upon hearing these words from the junior staff, Sun Baoqing’s face turned deathly pale. He didn’t dare linger and quickly left the office building. At a corner, he overheard the gatekeeper talking about him with someone else.

“Mr. Cheng, is what they’re saying about Sun Baoqing true or not?”

“How could it be false? A few days ago, people from our logistics and cafeteria heard it from the market that folks from Chaoyang Commune confirmed it. How could it be false? Everyone’s talking about Sun Baoqing from Qingshan Village.”

Sun Baoqing couldn’t bear to listen any longer. He turned and walked towards his dormitory, packed his things, and prepared to return to the village. This was probably real retribution.

Now, he didn’t know what people would say about him when he returned to the village. He felt like dying. After packing his things, he walked towards the factory gate. His coworkers he passed pointed and whispered at him.

Occasionally, he heard someone curse, “Bah, shameless scum. His thick skin is unbelievable.”
