Chapter 233: Good Luck
After Luo Qiao finished speaking, she shouldered her basket and left the Yao family home. She had only come by to check on things since it was on her way. Now that the matter was settled, staying any longer would only make things awkward.
As Luo Qiao was about to leave the family compound, she overheard two people talking: “Do you think those two people around the corner are the father and son that Yao Chengxuan chased away this afternoon?”
Looking in the direction indicated, Luo Qiao saw that it was indeed Zhang Dezhen and his son Zhang Dongze. While she didn’t want to criticize a father’s protective feelings towards his daughter, she had little respect for someone who disregards others’ feelings for the sake of his daughter.
Such behavior would only embolden Zhang Qiaoyan and make her more reckless in harming others.
Luo Qiao approached a group of children playing nearby and said, “Hello, kids. I’d like to give you some candy.”
The older kids stopped the younger ones from reaching for the candy and asked, “Who are you?”
Luo Qiao smiled gently and replied, “I’m not a bad person, I just have a question.”
The older child asked warily, “What’s your question?”
Luo Qiao glanced around and asked, “In our family compound, besides the main gate, are there any other small exits?”
The child asked, “Why do you want to know that?”
Luo Qiao was honest, “There are two men standing around the corner outside who are trying to stop me. I don’t want to encounter them, so I’m looking for another way out.”
The child went outside to check and then believed Luo Qiao’s words. “Come with us,” the child said.
The group of children led Luo Qiao through a series of turns until they reached an exit from the compound. The house being repaired was on the street, and there was a narrow passageway beside it that hadn’t yet been sealed off.
The children guided Luo Qiao through the wooden frame and out. Afterward, Luo Qiao took out a handful of fruit candies from her pocket, gave two to each child, and said, “Thank you for today. Go back quickly, and remember not to take candy from strangers outside. Be careful not to get taken away.”
The children laughed and ran off, saying, “We’ll remember it!”
Luo Qiao checked her direction and then left the family compound.
After Luo Qiao had left, Wu Peiling slapped her thigh, realizing she had let Luo Qiao go. Clearly, Yao Chengxuan had said earlier that the captain of Qingshan Village mentioned that Luo Qiao came to the city for someone to help her with medication.
She was so annoyed that she began to argue with her eldest daughter.
Luo Qiao had already bought her train ticket and visited the Yao family. With nothing else to do, she stopped by the post office nearby since it wasn’t crowded and went inside.
She asked the staff member, “Hello, I’d like to know if you have any old stamps. I’d like to buy some.”
The lady, noticing that the person speaking was a pretty young woman, asked, “How many do you need?”
Luo Qiao replied, “Do you have any complete sheets, or even loose ones?”
The lady went to the storage room and soon brought out a large box, saying, “This box contains some old stamps we found while cleaning up the back room. Pick out what you need.”
Luo Qiao selected some stamps she wanted, paid for them, and then asked the lady, “Do you have complete sheets of the monkey stamps?”
The lady glanced at her and went to check, then returned, saying, “We have three complete sheets left.”
Luo Qiao quickly said, “Please give me all of them.”
Each sheet had eighty stamps, priced at 0.08 yuan each. Seeing three loose stamps, Luo Qiao didn’t miss out on those either. She remembered that the last time she was in the city, the post office didn’t have any monkey stamps.
She had also inquired at the postal office in the commune but didn’t find any. So, finding them today was a stroke of luck. The lady, noticing that Luo Qiao wanted all the stamps, kindly reminded her, “Each sheet has eighty stamps. Are you sure you want them all?”
Luo Qiao nodded, “Yes, I want them all. They are for friends.”
She was thrilled, not expecting to find such a good deal today. She had previously considered looking for used stamps at a scrap station but hadn’t had any luck.
In a good mood, she returned home, closed the door securely, and then went into her storage space. She was heading south the next day and needed to prepare some food to store for the trip.
