Chapter 243: Anxious
Luo Haotian told him to ask his wife, Zhong Cuiping, if anything unusual had happened at the hospital back then when he got home from work.
After hanging up the phone, Zhang Jianjun couldn’t stay calm. He and his wife were the ones who accompanied them to the hospital back then, and his wife had been watching the child the whole time. How could the child have been switched?
Unable to wait until the end of the workday, he anxiously packed up and rushed back to the residential compound. As soon as he entered the yard, he started shouting, “Cuiping, Cuiping, where are you?”
After gulping down some cool water from the table, Zhang Jianjun saw Zhong Cuiping walk in and quickly said, “Something’s happened.”
Zhong Cuiping replied, “Why are you shouting? What happened?”
Zhang Jianjun said, “I just got a call from Luo Haotian. He said that his younger daughter was swapped at the hospital and asked me to check with you if anything unusual happened back then.”
Zhong Cuiping’s mind suddenly went blank. If the child had really been swapped, they would be in serious trouble. She suddenly felt a chill all over and her legs grew weak.
Seeing his wife’s reaction, Zhang Jianjun quickly stepped forward to support her and helped her sit down. “Don’t be scared. Since this has already happened, there’s nothing we can do but try to remember if anything went wrong at that time.”
Zhong Cuiping’s mind was in chaos, she couldn’t remember anything. She only knew that the child had been swapped right under her nose, and she hadn’t noticed. How could she explain this to the Luo family?
After thinking for a long time without recalling any mistakes, it was their younger daughter who asked upon hearing the situation, “Mom, did you ever leave the room during that time?”
Zhong Cuiping thought for a moment and suddenly remembered, “I did! I left the room briefly to use the restroom. Oh my God, could the switch have happened then?”
Suddenly, she said, “Jianjun, that couple who shared the room with Ning Xueling were from a village in the Chaoyang Commune. I remember we even talked to them.”
Zhang Jianjun suddenly realized something, looked up at his daughter, and the two of them stared wide-eyed at each other. Zhang Xiao said, “It couldn’t be that coincidental, could it?”
Zhang Jianjun said, “Alright, I’ll go to the regiment headquarter to borrow a car right now. In a bit, we’ll head to the city. Cuiping, isn’t your cousin Huifang working at that hospital?”
Zhong Cuiping thought for a moment, “Yes, she is at that hospital. I’ll call her right away.”
The person in the records room muttered under their breath, “What’s going on here? Several groups of people have come looking for Ning Xueling’s hospital records. Thankfully, these files weren’t destroyed.”
Zhong Cuiping’s cousin, Cheng Huifang, who works at the hospital, asked the staff to help find the hospital records from around the time Ning Xueling was admitted. They found records for Gao Suhua from Qingshan Village and Feng Hui from the city. Thankfully, these records were still intact.
This discovery left Zhang Jianjun and his daughter, Zhang Xiao, shaken. Luo Qiao was actually the child they had been looking for.
Seeing their reactions, Zhong Cuiping asked, “What’s wrong with you two?”
Zhang Xiao hugged her mother and said, “Mom, fate really works in mysterious ways. The girl who saved us last time, named Luo Qiao, is the child we’ve been looking for.”
Zhong Cuiping looked at her husband in disbelief. Zhang Jianjun said, “If nothing unexpected happens, she is indeed that child. Last time we met Luo Qiao on the road, she told us about her background.”
Zhong Cuiping said, “Then what are we waiting for? Call Luo Haotian and tell him about this.”
The family didn’t even bother returning to the base to make the call. Instead, they went straight to the nearby post office and called Luo Haotian, sharing everything they knew and suspected.
When Luo Haotian heard about Luo Qiao, his heart ached, and his eyes reddened. He instinctively felt that Luo Qiao must be his daughter and wished he could fly to her right now.
After hanging up, he immediately called his parents to tell them what had happened and arranged for someone to buy a train ticket to Ji City for the next day. He was extremely anxious.
After listening to Zhang Jianjun’s brief explanation of how their daughter had suffered for the past fifteen years, the grown man couldn’t help but cry. His brother-in-law, Ning Hongda, who had just entered the room, was startled to see him in tears.
