Chapter 39: Enrollment

Luo Qiao had already tested that in the space, chickens and rabbits wouldn’t randomly venture down the mountain. This reassured her a lot, preventing them from later causing trouble by damaging her vegetables and crops.

During this time, Luo Qiao had gone through all the junior high school textbooks she found in the space. She was confident she could handle the entrance exams without any issues. She had also skimmed through the high school books, but unfortunately, they were incomplete. It seemed she would need to find more time to search for them.

After the spring planting was over, Lu Yichen also sent news. His comrade had already informed the commune middle school, and if she passed the exam, she could join the high school entrance exam with this year’s graduates.

If she didn’t pass, it would be embarrassing, but as long as she passed the exam, the school would help her establish her student status, which reassured her.

Luo Qiao was overjoyed when she received the news and said, “Brother Lu, thank you so much. I’ll prepare some snacks later for you to give to your comrade. Please don’t refuse.”

Lu Yichen saw the little girl’s smiling face under the sunlight, and his mood improved as well. He knew she didn’t want to owe him a favor, so he didn’t oppose her suggestion.

Luo Qiao was straightforward in her actions. The next day, she took leave with the approval of the captain. When asked by the captain, she told him the truth, only asking him to keep it confidential to avoid gossip in the village.

The captain nodded in agreement, feeling a bit more respect for Luo Qiao.

When Luo Qiao arrived at the commune middle school, the main gate had just opened not long ago. She explained her purpose to the gatekeeper, who then directed her towards the direction of the principal’s office.

According to the gatekeeper, the principal usually arrived early and should be in the office at this time.

She gently knocked on the door, and a voice from inside said, “Please come in.”

Luo Qiao pushed open the door and respectfully said, “Hello, Principal. My name is Luo Qiao. Director Jiang from the County Education Bureau sent me to participate in the enrollment exam.”

Principal Qin paused for a moment, then smiled, “Oh, I remember now. You’re the child Director Jiang mentioned, wanting to directly participate in the high school entrance exam, right?”

Luo Qiao nodded and replied, “Yes, Principal.”

Principal Qin asked, “I heard you haven’t attended primary school before?”

Luo Qiao didn’t hide anything, “Yes, that’s right. When I was on the farm, I studied with several professors there for many years. After they returned to the city, I continued to study on my own. Now I’ve completed the junior high school curriculum and I’m preparing to study for high school. However, self-study alone isn’t enough. I need a diploma for recognition, so I’ve troubled the Principal.”

Principal Qin heard people coming into the office outside, so he called over a teacher from the graduating class to bring a mock exam paper for Luo Qiao to do.

Luo Qiao spent two hours completing all the exam papers. By the time she finished the last paper, the results for the earlier papers had already been announced, astonishing the teachers who had come in.

Principal Qin immediately decided to allow her to join Class 1. However, Luo Qiao explained her situation—that she didn’t have time to attend classes regularly but would study and practice at home.

After listening to Luo Qiao’s explanation, Principal Qin sighed deeply and advised, “Make sure to review more. We’ll have a classmates notify you in advance for each school exam.”

After thanking Principal Qin repeatedly, Luo Qiao followed Teacher Ning, who had been called over, to complete the enrollment procedures and pay the fees. She checked the graduation class’s books and found that she already had most of them, saving her some book costs.

Afterward, she introduced herself briefly to Class 1 with Teacher Ning’s guidance. Teacher Ning also explained Luo Qiao’s situation. With everything settled, Luo Qiao bid farewell to the teachers and left the school.
