Chapter 52: I Have a Fiancée

Lu Yichen’s face immediately darkened. “Sorry, you’ve come to the wrong place, Miss. I have a fiancée.” He was about to shut the door.

Gao Taohua panicked and pushed the door open. “Brother Lu, don’t lie. If you really had a fiancée, you wouldn’t be able to come to our place. Plus, your leg is still injured. I, a female comrade, don’t look down on you, so why would you refuse me?”

Lu Yichen felt a surge of anger but suppressed the urge to kick her out. “You have foul breath,” he said bluntly.

Stunned by his words, Gao Taohua glared at Lu Yichen before covering her face and running off.

After eating, Luo Qiao planned to bring a fish to the production captain’s family to express her gratitude for their recent help. She happened to overhear the conversation between Gao Taohua and Lu Yichen, which almost made her choke from holding in her laughter.

She waited for Gao Taohua to leave before intending to approach Lu Yichen, not wanting the parties involved to know someone had overheard to avoid awkwardness.

Just as she was still chuckling, Lu Yichen said, “How long are you going to stand there?”

Luo Qiao looked around – there was no one else.

Amused by her confusion, Lu Yichen said, “I’m talking about you. Why are you looking around?”

Realizing he had spotted her shadow, Luo Qiao came out sheepishly. “Brother Lu, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. I was just passing by, really.” She showed him what was in her hands as proof.

Not wanting to make an issue of it, Lu Yichen said, “It’s unsafe for a girl to be out this late. Let me walk you to where you need to go.”

Luo Qiao quickly refused. “No need, I’ll be back soon. It’s still early.” After that, she ran away.

She did not want to risk any misunderstandings that could lead to her being the subject of malicious and unpleasant gossip again. What if Gao Taohua came back? Wouldn’t it only bring trouble.

Surprised by her reaction, Lu Yichen shook his head and went back inside.

Luo Qiao arrived at the captain’s home and called out, “Auntie Qiao, are you home?”

The whole family had just finished eating. Qiao Lanlan smiled, “Come in! Why are you here at this hour? Have you eaten?”

“I’ve eaten,” Luo Qiao replied with a smile as she entered, greeting everyone: “Hello Captain, Elder Gao, Second Gao, Sister-in-law Song, Sister-in-law Feng, kids.”

The captain asked, “What brings you here, Luo Qiao?”

Luo Qiao lifted her bag. “Auntie Qiao, quickly find a basin and put some water in it.”

Everyone looked at the seemingly moving bag in her hands.

“What’s inside?” Auntie Qiao asked.

Luo Qiao pulled her towards the water vat. “It’s a fish I caught from the pond. I’m bringing one for you all to taste. You can’t eat it today since the fish isn’t dead yet, so keep it in the water first. Have it tomorrow to supplement your meals.”

Auntie Qiao stopped walking and said, “No, we can’t take it. You must have worked hard to get this food.”

Luo Qiao tugged her arm. “Auntie, don’t forget I’ve been borrowing so many things from your family. If not for the captain and you helping me back then, I wouldn’t have known what to do.”
