Chapter 6: Resolved
Upon hearing that Luo Qiao intended to involve the police, the Captain furrowed his brow. He thought to himself that even if Luo Qiao wasn’t Zhao family’s daughter and their son’s household registration had been transferred away, letting Luo Qiao register her household wouldn’t have much impact.
Gao Suhua was also afraid that Luo Qiao might really go to the police, which could lead to further complications. So she chimed in, “Captain, since our precious son’s household registration has already been transferred away, why not help Luo Qiao register hers?”
The Captain also feared that news of Zhao family’s affairs would spread, becoming fodder for gossip in neighboring villages.
He decided, “Alright then, there’s an empty house in the Youth Courtyard. You can stay there for now, but you’ll have to pay rent.”
Luo Qiao nodded, “I understand. The house belongs to the commune, so I’ll pay rent.”
Seeing that Luo Qiao was sensible despite her young age, the Captain felt relieved and said, “Give me your household registration transfer certificate, and I’ll find time to help you get it sorted out. You’ll pay one yuan per month to the team from your year-end dividends since you don’t have money right now. Is that acceptable to you?”
Luo Qiao replied, “That’s fine. Thank you, Captain.”
To avoid future disputes, Luo Qiao added, “Since that’s settled, Captain, could you write a statement for us stating that I have no relation to the Zhao family? This way, if the Luo and Zhao families bring up this matter again in the future, we’ll have proof to settle it without trouble.”
Gao Suhua now wants to sever ties with her. She doesn’t want to support Luo Qiao in vain, and fearing potential trouble from the Luo family, thought it was a good idea to have such a statement. Luo Qiao had already stated that she could support herself through work points, so they wouldn’t be blamed for any future misfortune.
Lu Yichen fetched pen and paper and helped draft three statements. Essentially, they stated that Luo Qiao had no blood relation to the Zhao family and that they would lead separate lives from now on. The Captain, Lu Yichen, and several respected villagers from the village signed as witnesses.
Finally, Luo Qiao, Gao Suhua, and Zhao Pulin, who had been silent all along, signed and stamped their fingerprints on the documents. Each party kept a copy, with one copy remaining in the possession of the village team. Thus, the matter was considered settled.
With the matter settled, the Captain dismissed everyone and said to Luo Qiao, “You’re still not well. Stay temporarily at Yichen’s house. The Luo family left ten yuan yesterday for your medical expenses. The doctor’s fee and medicine cost three yuan. Here’s the remaining seven yuan for you. You’ll need it to buy necessities at the Youth Courtyard.”
Luo Qiao took the money and thanked the Captain repeatedly.
Finally resolving the issue, Luo Qiao was utterly exhausted.
Lu Yichen said, “Take some rest first,” then left with the Captain.
After Lu Yichen and the Captain left, Luo Qiao quickly lay down on the kang. Her body was too weak.
As she lay on the kang, she reflected on everything that had happened. She realized she might be living in Qingshan Village for the next few years so she couldn’t help but sigh.
Thinking about the place she dreamed of before, Luo Qiao wished she really had such a space. Remembering the novels she had read before, she jokingly said aloud, “Enter.”
In an instant, the scenery before her changed. She found herself standing in front of a bookshelf. Upon closer inspection, wasn’t this the place from her previous dreams? She couldn’t help but freeze, reaching out to pinch herself. It hurt, confirming it wasn’t a dream.
She had indeed gained a space; her consciousness had entered here before. This stroke of luck was unbelievable. Seeing the book that had fallen on the ground, it was the embroidery technique book she had pulled out in her dream before.
However, she wasn’t in the mood to look at it now. She decided to put the book back where it belonged.
