Chapter 1: Entering the Book
Tang Wan had transmigrated into a novel.
If she had known that sharing a name with a character in a novel was such a sure way to transmigrate, she definitely wouldn’t have opened the period drama her best friend recommended to her before bed.
What was even worse was… she shared the exact same name as the cannon-fodder female supporting character in that book.
The novel’s female lead was a girl who had been reborn. In her previous life, when she was sent to the countryside as an educated youth, she couldn’t bear the hardships of farm work and ended up marrying the local male lead…
After the college entrance exams were reinstated, she cruelly abandoned her husband and children in the village and went to the city to attend university. When the male lead came looking for her with the children, he found she had already married a city man.
Unfortunately, that city man appeared gentle and refined on the surface but had repeatedly abused her behind closed doors. He even caused her to miscarry twice. Eventually, he fell seriously ill, and on his deathbed at the hospital, she encountered the now successful male lead, who was there with his current wife and their child — they looked happy and fulfilled, leaving her both heartbroken and full of regret.
After being reborn, the female lead realized she had returned to the time right after being sent to the countryside but before marrying the male lead. Determined to turn over a new leaf, she planned to live a good life with him. The couple then worked hard together to become prosperous.
Tang Wan transmigrated into the role of the cannon-fodder female supporting character — the male lead’s “current wife” in his previous life. In the reborn timeline, since the female lead did not abandon the male lead, naturally, this supporting character never ended up with him either. Instead, she married a village loafer and barely appeared after that.
Tang Wan pieced together the timeline and realized it was currently the time when she and the book’s female lead, Zhong Ling, had just arrived in the countryside. Zhong Ling should have already been reborn.
Usually, the female supporting characters around the heroine don’t have good endings, so Tang Wan planned to avoid Zhong Ling as much as possible.
Since she was here now, Tang Wan decided to just treat herself as the real Tang Wan — though she had no idea where the original Tang Wan had gone. If she could go to her, that would be even better; then she wouldn’t have to donate the villa and her assets registered under her name.
The original body had been pampered at home and brought many things to the countryside: silk pajamas, cotton skirts, snowflake cream…
As Tang Wan inspected these belongings, a sudden thought flashed through her mind.
She had read before that transmigration usually came with a special space!
Did she have one too?
She searched her body, hoping to find a bracelet or ring that contained storage space, but looking around in vain, she found nothing except her curvy figure.
Well, who in this era would openly carry such things?
Disheartened, Tang Wan sat at the edge of the bed. Sure enough, without being the female lead, there was no female lead’s aura. She clearly remembered Zhong Ling had a space after rebirth — just a red pendant that recognized its owner with a drop of blood. Why did she have nothing?
She pulled her gaze away and opened her suitcase to change clothes and go out.
The clothes inside were all made of pure cotton or linen — no “Dacron,” the era’s most popular fabric. That polyester material was poorly breathable and stuck to the skin when sweating. Tang Wan had tried wearing it once and disliked it, so she didn’t bring any here.
She chose a dark-colored outfit and put the other clothes away one by one, but she felt something in a hidden compartment of the suitcase — her entire fortune was there.
Suddenly, Tang Wan’s eyes lit up. She pulled out the items and noticed some wrinkled bills unlike any currency she had seen used in this era.
Inside the suitcase, quietly lying there among the bills… was a red pendant shaped like a teardrop!
Tang Wan immediately felt something was off.
That red, water-drop-shaped pendant looked exactly like the space pendant described in the original book — the one Zhong Ling got after rebirth.
A flood of thoughts raced through her mind: Why did this pendant eventually become Zhong Ling’s?
At the same time, she instinctively stood and went to the kitchen to cut her finger and let blood drip onto the pendant…
As the fresh blood fell on the pendant, Tang Wan felt a powerful suction emanate from it, and in the next moment, she found herself in another space.
Just as described in the book, this was the female lead’s “cheat” space — a small room with a spiritual spring.
The spring didn’t have powers like cleansing marrow or reviving the dead but was useful for strengthening the body and beautifying the skin.
After checking the room, Tang Wan was sure this was Zhong Ling’s space.
Inside, as described in the book, was a row of shelves with several boxes containing various jewels, left by previous owners.
Outside the room was an open field where crops grew quickly.
Zhong Ling had relied on farming here to gain capital for going to the black market.
The book also said this space preserved freshness — food placed inside stayed just as fresh. Warm steamed buns kept their steam even after several days.
After looking around, Tang Wan silently wished to return out, and the next moment she was back in the educated youth’s dormitory.
She saw the pendant vanish from her hand, and when she pulled open her collar, a water-drop-shaped mark had appeared on her chest — just like the book described.
Tang Wan counted her fortune — over 800 in cash, a watch, and a thick stack of bills. After thinking, she put 40 to 50 in small change and some frequently used bills back in their original place and stored the rest inside the space.
Just as she finished, noisy voices came from outside.
The other educated youths were returning from work.
Tang Wan had gotten heatstroke that morning and didn’t have much work in the field, so the team leader agreed to let her rest at the dorm — no work points would be given.
Now the others were back, Tang Wan tidied her suitcase and had just put it under the bed when someone entered.
The first to enter was a girl named Li Qing, an educated youth who had come last year. She looked a bit weak, possibly malnourished. Seeing Tang Wan, she asked, “How does it feel to skip work all afternoon?”
Tang Wan frowned at this accusatory tone, as if Li Qing disapproved of her absence.
“The team leader agreed to let me rest. Are you unhappy with the team leader’s decision?” Tang Wan looked Li Qing directly in the eyes without hiding.
Li Qing opened her mouth, “No, you’re pretty and have the backing of the brigade leader. Who dares complain?”
Two other educated youths who came in behind Li Qing heard this but said nothing.
Tang Wan was indeed quite beautiful — not only in this village but even among the educated youths before arriving here, no one looked as pretty.
Her face was fair and delicate, eyes bright and clear, naturally inspiring a protective instinct.
On the day she arrived, villagers had helped carry her luggage to the dorm.
Even the other male educated youths were gentler with Tang Wan than with other female youths.
This made Li Qing a little resentful — after all, she liked a male youth in the camp.
The original body had a gentle and kind nature and usually understood the undertones of their words, but now Tang Wan wasn’t someone easily bullied.
“So you mean the brigade leader is someone who favors looks?” Tang Wan’s voice was soft and gentle, but what she said made one’s heart skip a beat.
Such an accusation was serious — not just a rumor.
“I didn’t mean that!” Li Qing was caught off guard.
“But that’s exactly what you said. We all heard it. I’ll treat this as an accident this time, but next time, I won’t know what your intentions are!”
With that, Tang Wan turned and left the dormitory without looking back.
She still had to live here and didn’t want to make enemies over such a small matter but would never let anyone take advantage of her.
