Chapter 22: Meeting Each Other
Steel Factory Family Compound
A tall, thin young man wearing glasses sat on the sofa, his expression clearly impatient.
“Mom, I’m working right now. Why did you drag me here?”
“You’re not trying to set me up with Wen Xue again, are you? Let me say this first—I’m not interested in someone like her. Don’t waste your effort.”
Chen Qiuwie was pouring water for a middle-aged woman and felt a bit embarrassed hearing this.
The middle-aged woman calmly lifted her teacup and took a light sip.
“This is mealtime; it won’t interfere with your work.”
Zheng Jiahe, losing patience since he couldn’t reason with her, stood up and prepared to leave.
He threw out one last sentence:
“I’m not doing any blind dates anyway; they’re all mismatched, wasting my time.”
The middle-aged woman retorted sharply,
“Sit down first. This time it’s not someone else—it’s the one you were supposed to meet last time, Wen Nian. Haven’t you seen her photo before? You even said she was pretty.”
“Wen Nian? That village girl?” Zheng Jiahe was shocked.
Never mind his family background, he was a supervisor at the steel factory, a respectable figure.
What on earth was his mother thinking?
Wasn’t she the one who hated rural people the most?
Why was she suddenly not disgusted anymore?
He remembered months ago when his mother showed him photos of several women from home.
Among them was Wen Nian.
This woman was so skinny she had hardly any flesh on her bones, all dried up and withered—only her face was somewhat decent.
That’s why he still remembered her a little.
The last time he reluctantly agreed to meet someone, it was because she looked reasonably good.
But the Wen family sent a substitute this time—Wen Xue, that ugly freak.
Zheng Jiahe glanced at the overly attentive Chen Qiuwie with disdain.
Wen Jiancheng could only become the workshop director thanks to his father.
His mother was the same; the blind date hadn’t even been arranged yet, but the bride price was already paid.
The Wen family was greedy and never gave the bride price back.
They insisted on pushing their daughter forward.
As if Zheng Jiahe was some kind of person to take all the rejects.
Truly shameless and never satisfied.
The middle-aged woman told him to calm down.
“Since you’re here, just meet her once. Don’t worry; I guarantee you’ll be satisfied.”
Over the years, she had been worried sick about her youngest son’s marriage.
Ever since his young wife passed away, her son hadn’t had any intention to remarry for many years.
Thinking about his late wife still made her angry.
Back then, her youngest son had set his heart on this girl, determined to marry her into the family.
As a parent, she couldn’t go against her child.
Even though she was reluctant, she still allowed her into the Zheng family.
She thought, village girl or not, at least she looked decent.
As long as she could give her a grandson, it would be fine.
The eldest son had already been married off.
She just wanted the youngest son to find someone he liked.
But who knew the woman cared only about her own family.
She secretly took all the good things back to her parents’ home.
Almost emptied the in-laws’ house.
If she was just greedy for property, it wouldn’t matter—Zheng family was rich and powerful.
But the woman didn’t keep to her duty as a wife; every time she had a chance to go back to her village, she would flirt and exchange glances with her childhood sweetheart from before.
Indulging in immoral behavior.
Who could tolerate that?
The youngest son lost his temper and hit her.
Who would’ve expected the young wife’s temper was so fierce she actually jumped into the river to commit suicide.
Every time she thought about that matter, she felt sick to her stomach.
Now, she was also relieved that her youngest daughter-in-law hadn’t left behind any children.
Otherwise, even if the child survived, who knew whose it would be?
Because of that incident, her youngest son developed an aversion to marriage.
The girls introduced to him so far could easily form a strong lineup.
But those girls had all liked him at first sight.
He, however, rejected them for one reason or another—too short, too ugly.
Or the skin wasn’t fair enough, the figure wasn’t good enough, the temperament not outstanding.
He always found faults everywhere and rejected them all.
Clearly, he had a shadow over marriage.
“I won’t meet her,” Zheng Jiahe said with strong disdain.
Right now, he didn’t want to find the right person.
Too pretty? He was really scared inside.
Too ugly? He looked down on them.
“Just promise me you’ll meet Wen Nian once. Whether you like her or not, after this I won’t pressure you about marriage anymore. It’s all up to you,”
the middle-aged woman used her trump card.
If she hadn’t seen Wen Nian once at the supply and marketing cooperative, she wouldn’t have been so confident.
The girl was completely different from the photos—like a transformed person in just a few months.
Rosy lips, white teeth, skin whiter than snow, a slender waist and long legs, smooth and graceful curves. Even she was stunned for a long time when she saw her.
A girl from a remote mountain village, living with a blind grandmother.
Probably barely had enough to eat, yet she grew up like this—simply unbelievable.
Her dewy skin had not a single flaw.
Her thick black hair was shiny and glossy, no signs of yellowing or split ends common in others.
Simply put, she was naturally gifted beauty.
Although she came from the countryside, her biological father owed a favor to the Lu family.
If it weren’t for that relationship, she wouldn’t have looked for a rural girl as a daughter-in-law again.
Besides, she had no choice—the youngest son was not young anymore, she couldn’t just drag things out forever.
To avoid repeating the past mistakes, she even sent someone to investigate Shanghe Village.
The girl had a very good reputation in the village, with a gentle and obedient nature, honest and straightforward.
No rumors about childhood sweethearts; besides school, she barely left the house or contacted outsiders.
Hearing his mother say all this, Zheng Jiahe had no choice but to endure and sit down.
He definitely wouldn’t agree to any more blind dates in the future. What was this all about?
Even a village girl was being pushed on him now.
Zheng Jiahe was very irritated and annoyed.
He glanced up unconsciously—and saw a pure and charming young beauty.
She stood gracefully in front of him, smiling slightly.
At that moment, all the anger in Zheng Jiahe’s heart vanished in an instant.
No thoughts remained.
He felt as if Cupid’s arrow had pierced his heart.
His heart pounded wildly, as if it was about to jump out of his throat.
His love had finally arrived.
Her pale face, skin like creamy jade, the fitted blouse and skirt clinging to her slender figure.
Her body looked particularly shapely, with long, slender legs.
Loose, soft flaxen braids hung by her neck, making her look even more delicate and lovely.
The whole person looked extremely pure, with a deep, bone-deep charm.
She completely captured Zheng Jiahe’s gaze.
The middle-aged woman saw her son staring without blinking and immediately knew he liked her.
A goddess-like girl like this, any man would be helpless.
Especially since her son had always valued appearance highly.
The heavy stone in her heart finally dropped.
Now it was settled—no more searching for blind date matches for him.
