Chapter 48 – Even Eating Looks So Good
Lu Hanzheng calmly withdrew his hand.
He glanced at the small white leather shoes on her feet and said in a low voice,
“Don’t bring food again. I eat lunch in the canteen.”
Wen Nian instantly pouted in displeasure.
“Why? Are you unhappy that I came to see you?”
She had worked hard to make a loving meal and carried it all this way just to bring it to him.
And yet, not only did he not say a single warm or appreciative word, he even greeted her with a sour expression.
Was she that much of an embarrassment as his girlfriend?
“Give me the lunchbox—you’re not getting it now.”
She huffed, trying to snatch the lunchbox back from him.
It wasn’t every day that she felt the urge to show a little care for her boyfriend.
And this was the thanks she got?
Hmph!
Don’t even think about getting another loving meal from her again!
Lu Hanzheng dodged swiftly, lunchbox still in hand, not understanding why she was suddenly upset.
Wen Nian hadn’t actually intended to take it back—she was just angry at his attitude.
Lu Hanzheng held the lunchbox and explained with a serious expression,
“I’m not unhappy. It’s just that the distance from home to the camp isn’t short. You don’t have to go through all this trouble to bring me food.”
Wen Nian finally felt a little better inside.
At least he cared about her wellbeing.
Lu Hanzheng’s brows lifted slightly.
“Come on, let’s go in and rest for a bit.”
He led her to the gate and helped her register.
Family members were allowed to visit the military base, but they had to register and wait to be escorted in.
After all, this was a restricted military zone—not a place anyone could just wander into.
Along the way, Wen Nian followed behind him openly and confidently.
The Capital Military District was spacious and bright, with well-organized greenery.
Even the buildings in the distance were arranged in an orderly fashion.
The training grounds were huge, filled with all kinds of equipment.
Though it was lunchtime, many soldiers were still training inside.
In such a solemn and dignified place, Wen Nian didn’t dare ask too many questions.
She had many curiosities—like what those pieces of equipment were, some of which she’d never seen before.
But in the end, she decided not to ask. Her identity wasn’t exactly legitimate here.
What if she accidentally asked something she shouldn’t? If her identity were exposed, she might actually be mistaken for a spy.
Lu Hanzheng remained silent as well, quietly leading her forward.
Only his gaze would occasionally, almost imperceptibly, fall on her.
A squad of soldiers, having just finished training, stopped when they passed by.
“Attention!”
The commanding voice was powerful and stern.
Wen Nian instinctively looked up.
When the soldiers saw Lu Hanzheng, they all snapped to salute.
Lu Hanzheng responded with a serious nod.
No one joked around, no one dared to tease.
But every single one of their gazes landed straight on Wen Nian.
Some were stunned, some curious.
Wen Nian blinked her dewy eyes and gave them a bright and polite smile.
Ah, yes—outstanding men really were all given to the country.
These soldiers were all tall and strong, first-rate in build.
In terms of appearance, none could quite match Lu Hanzheng, of course.
But they were still neatly presentable—not a single awkward or scruffy face among them.
Several soldiers were visibly stunned by Wen Nian’s smile, their faces quickly flushing red.
Women were rare in the barracks.
And now, suddenly, there appeared such a beautiful girl—
The whole training ground practically buzzed with excitement.
More than a few soldiers were so entranced they couldn’t take their eyes off her.
But with Lu Hanzheng’s authority looming, no one dared say a word.
They could only stare from afar, not even daring to greet her.
Lu Hanzheng was extremely perceptive—let alone with so many blatant, undisguised stares.
He swept his gaze over each soldier one by one.
Useless.
Clearly, the training wasn’t tough enough.
He’d make sure to add extra drills for them later.
These rookie soldiers all thought their glances were subtle, not realizing Lu Hanzheng had noticed every single one of them and mentally jotted down names—for a nice bonus training session.
Lu Hanzheng brought her to a small building and led her all the way to the third floor.
He opened a room and ushered her inside.
Then he motioned for her to sit on the couch and even thoughtfully poured her a glass of water.
Wen Nian took a small sip.
After walking for so long, she really was a bit thirsty.
“You go ahead and eat. I’ll just sit here for a while.”
Lu Hanzheng nodded and opened the meal box to start eating.
Two meat dishes, two vegetables—his favorites—and all still steaming, as if they had just come off the stove.
A heart-shaped sunny-side-up egg was placed on top of the rice.
Holding her cup, Wen Nian began to take in her surroundings.
The room was bright and spacious, with a desk, office chair, sofa, and bookshelves—everything one would expect.
On the wall hung a poster with bold words: “Stay vigilant. Defend the nation.”
That reminded her—Lu Hanzheng’s 28th regiment specialized in reconnaissance.
Thinking of that, she stopped herself from looking around further.
She turned to the window instead. Outside, the crisp autumn air was clear and bright. Noon sunlight poured through the glass and spilled across her body, making her feel a little warm.
She looked out for a bit, then turned her gaze back.
After all, no scenery outside could compare to the one sitting inside.
The man’s deep phoenix eyes were slightly lowered, his nose straight, jawline sharp.
His Adam’s apple moved rhythmically with each swallow.
The olive-green uniform was perfectly pressed and crisp, without a wrinkle in sight. His buttons were fastened all the way to the top.
A Swiss watch wrapped around his left wrist. In his other hand, he held an aluminum spoon, eating steadily in big bites.
Even while eating, his posture remained upright, military-standard.
Wen Nian, by contrast, slouched halfway on the sofa, resting her chin on her palm.
She stared at the man without blinking.
Even the way he eats is sexy.
She really couldn’t resist the allure of a uniform.
She didn’t know if it was the harsh noon sunlight or the stuffy room, but her whole body began to feel hot.
Her heart thumped wildly in her chest.
Lu Hanzheng finished every last bite of his meal and tidied up the box.
When he looked up, his eyes locked right onto hers.
He frowned slightly.
“Are you feeling unwell? Why is your face so red?”
Wen Nian touched her warm cheeks and quickly got up from the sofa, moving to the window.
She waved her hand in front of her face to fan herself.
“I’m fine—just a little hot.”
Today, to maintain a modest appearance, she’d picked a conservative dress.
Unfortunately, the material was thick, and for some reason, the weather had gotten warmer again.
It’s already autumn—why is it still so hot?
Afraid Lu Hanzheng would scold her, she had even buttoned the dress all the way to the top.
Now she felt not only hot, but like her neckline was choking her.
As she spoke, she began unbuttoning the top two buttons.
The relief was instant.
Lu Hanzheng strode over—and immediately saw her exposed, delicate collarbones.
From his height, he could even glimpse the color of her undergarments inside, and the full curves beneath.
“Ridiculous! Button it back up!”
Lu Hanzheng instantly lost his composure.
As he scolded her, he rushed to shut the door tightly.
Wen Nian was completely baffled.
She glanced down at her collar.
She had deliberately worn a tank-style undershirt today—two buttons undone wouldn’t cause any wardrobe malfunctions.
Why was he so nervous?
