The Lu family slowly walked away, and someone from the nearby house came out.
They glanced at their retreating figures, then turned and went back inside, muttering to themselves as they looked at their husband: “Look at how well Lu Cheng and his wife handle things. You’re like a closed gourd.”
Thinking about the words she had vaguely overheard earlier, “You’re amazing.”
Oh my… her hair stood on end.
She only caught that one sentence though.
She would have liked to hear more, but they weren’t stopping to talk just for her benefit.
It was surprising, really, that Comrade Lin was so good at complimenting Lu Cheng.
But then again, they were newlyweds, and Lin was delicate and sweet-looking.
Of course, she knew how to flatter him. If she were to say to her own husband, “You’re amazing…”
No, that wouldn’t do—she’d get so jealous, she’d probably be overwhelmed by vinegar (jealousy).
That evening, Lu Cheng and Lin Qingqing discussed the dinner party again.
They decided to have it on the weekend, choosing a day when Lin Qingqing had her rest day.
It was probably a modern mindset, but Lin Qingqing liked to take Sundays off as her one day of rest.
The next day, Lu Cheng went to find the Political Commissar.
“Did Comrade Lin agree?” As soon as the Political Commissar saw Lu Cheng, he couldn’t wait to ask.
Lu Cheng replied, “What do you mean?”
The Political Commissar was almost ready to hit him. “Are you really going to play dumb with me? Of course, I hope for both things to have a good outcome. Now, just tell me straightforwardly.”
Lu Cheng replied, “One good news, one bad news. Which one do you think is the good news?”
The Political Commissar stared at him, speechless. “…You’re really doing this to me, huh? The logistics thing?”
This made sense.
Transitioning from an external member in the Third Company’s mess to a regular member in the logistics unit was a significant difference.
So, the good news was likely that, and the bad news was, of course, the dinner party.
The Political Commissar had been joking about the dinner party; it was Lin Qingqing’s transfer to logistics that was the main concern.
Lu Cheng nodded. “You’re half right.”
The Political Commissar groaned. “You’re really messing with my mind now. I can’t guess anymore.”
Lu Cheng stopped teasing him and said honestly, “My wife has agreed to join logistics to take care of the food.”
The Political Commissar was very pleased to hear that.
At last, the task everyone had asked for was completed. “Congratulations, congratulations! However, in terms of procedure, Comrade Lin still needs to undergo another investigation. Previously, you had political checks for your marriage, but now that she’s joining logistics and becoming a logistics soldier, she will need a more thorough review.”
Lu Cheng replied, “I will follow the organization’s arrangements.”
The Political Commissar knew Lu Cheng wouldn’t object. “Alright, later you can take Comrade Lin to report in logistics. But you said I was half right, what did you mean by that?”
Lu Cheng smiled lightly. “It means, my wife agreed to the dinner, but it will be a few days. We’ll wait until her Sunday off, and she’ll also need time to prepare the ingredients.”
“Go to hell…” The Political Commissar wanted to hit him.
If it weren’t for the fact that Lu Cheng was taller and younger than him, he would have definitely gone to punch him. “Alright, alright, I don’t want to see you anymore. Get out of here!”
“Yes, sir.” Lu Cheng left without hesitation.
The political commissar smiled and shook his head, a bit surprised.
Lu Cheng had always been a serious person, but now he was joking.
Indeed, men still need women to balance them out.
Don’t ask him how he knew, after all, he had been through it himself.
After leaving the political commissar’s office, Lu Cheng went directly to the Third Company mess hall.
Since it wasn’t yet 8 o’clock, everyone was still busy.
Qi Shao and the others didn’t know that Lin Qingqing was about to move to the logistics department.
Lin Qingqing was waiting for Lu Cheng to inform her.
Since the matter wasn’t confirmed yet, she certainly wouldn’t bring it up.
When Lin Qingqing saw Lu Cheng, she walked over and asked, “What brings you here?”
“I just came from the political commissar. He said that if you’re ready, you can report to the logistics department today. However, there will still be a routine review process from the unit, but it won’t affect your appointment.”
Since she was a military wife, her political review would surely pass.
The review process was just a formality, so the unit could let her start working ahead of time.
Lin Qingqing asked, “So soon? In that case, I’ll go and say goodbye to Squad Leader Qi and the others. Luckily, I’ve already planned the menu for this month for the Third Company. Even if I’m not here, things should still be fine. But if I leave, someone will need to be recruited to take my place, right?”
Lu Cheng replied, “Don’t worry. Qi Shao will handle the recruitment.”
“Okay.”
Qi Shao was stoking the fire.
For breakfast, they had soups and steamed sweet potatoes.
Although they woke up when the alarm sounded, preparing breakfast was still fairly easy.
“Squad Leader, I need to talk to you,” Lin Qingqing said as she approached the stove.
Qi Shao added some more firewood to the stove and stood up. “What’s the matter, Comrade Lin?”
“This is the situation…” Lin Qingqing explained her move to the logistics department. “So, I might be transferring there in the next few days. I’ve already arranged the menu for this month, so there shouldn’t be any problems. If anything comes up, Squad Leader, you can come to the logistics department to find me.”
Qi Shao was genuinely happy for Lin Qingqing: “That’s great! Congratulations, Comrade Lin. I’m familiar with the logistics department, so don’t worry. If there’s any issue, I’ll come find you. As for the logistics department…”
Qi Shao often worked with the logistics department, as the mess hall fell under its jurisdiction.
He was familiar with the people there, so he started to analyze the personalities of those in the logistics department for Lin Qingqing.
The logistics department of the unit had several subdivisions: the Command Department, Political Department, Financial Department, Supply Department, Health Department, Armament Department, Transport Department, Fuel Department, Material Department, Barracks Department, and the Military Supply Production Department.
Lin Qingqing was assigned to the Material Department, specifically to the part responsible for the mess halls.
The unit’s mess halls were self-sufficient, so although they belonged to the logistics department, they operated as an independent entity.
They didn’t participate in certain meetings of the logistics department.
However, this part of the logistics department was very important because it directly impacted the lives of the comrades.
As the supply and transportation of food was so vital, the comrades in the mess hall were responsible for it, not the transport department.
They took care of everything from purchasing to transportation, making it much easier to investigate if something went wrong.
There were only two people in the mess hall section: one was the director, a senior female soldier from the military academy, and the other was an officer who had come from the cultural troupe after an incident during a performance.
She was reassigned to the mess hall section as a staff member.
Now, Lin Qingqing would be the third person in the department.
Lu Cheng took Lin Qingqing to the logistics department.
The logistics department building was large but old-fashioned, a typical style of buildings from that era.
Lin Qingqing had been in the unit for a little over a month, but this was her first time entering the department.
Her previous activities had been limited to the family quarters and the mess hall, both of which were outside the main unit.
Lin Qingqing felt a little anxious as she walked.
This was the first time she was so close to the influential figures in the unit.
She couldn’t help but be nervous.
If this were the modern world, such a connection would be hard to come by.
“Don’t worry,” Lu Cheng said. “Remember, it was the political commissar who invited you here.” So, she wasn’t someone without support.
“Okay.” Lin Qingqing’s nervousness wasn’t from fear but more from a rising sense of excitement.
Lu Cheng deliberately slowed his pace to walk alongside her.
As they entered the logistics department building, they saw soldiers standing guard.
The soldiers saluted when they saw Lu Cheng.
He walked up to them and asked, “Excuse me, where is the office responsible for the mess halls?”
Soldier: “It’s in the office 208 on the second floor.”
Lu Cheng: “Thank you.”
Lu Cheng led Lin Qingqing directly upstairs.
“Lu Cheng, if I work here in the future, would I have to wear a uniform too?” Lin Qingqing asked curiously.
She wondered if working here meant she would become a government employee.
However, the working environment here felt completely different from that of a regular government office.
It was serious, rigorous, meticulous, even awe-inspiring and aspirational.
Lu Cheng: “You’ll have to ask your director about that.”
When they reached the second floor, they quickly found office 208.
Lu Cheng knocked on the door.
The door was open, and someone inside looked up.
A slightly younger female officer came out, her eyes scanning the insignia on Lu Cheng’s uniform. “Deputy Commander,” she said respectfully, noticing his rank.
She was curious about his identity, especially since he was such a young deputy commander.
She also noticed Lin Qingqing standing behind him.
“Hello, I’m Lu Cheng, and this is my wife, Lin Qingqing. Commissar Qu sent her here for reporting,” Lu Cheng said.
“Ah, so you’re Commander Lu and Comrade Lin. Please, come in. Commissar Qu mentioned this yesterday.” The young officer smiled and gestured for them to enter. “By the way, I’m Wang Lele, an officer here.”
Wang Lele was 20 years old and had just married last June.
Her husband was the company commander here.
She had been able to get this position because she was a female soldier, had been injured while working, and had the added benefit of her husband’s connections.
“Commander Lu, Comrade Lin, please make yourselves comfortable.” An older woman, appearing to be in her forties, stood up.
She looked serious. “I’m Hong Jun, the director responsible for the cafeteria.”
Lu Cheng: “Hello, Director Hong.”
Lin Qingqing: “Hello, Director Hong.”
“Please sit.” Director Hong asked Wang Lele to pour them tea.
Then she turned to Lin Qingqing, “Has Commissar Qu explained your duties?”
