Chapter 1: Transmigrated and Annulled Engagement
“You think you can just annul the engagement whenever you want? How is that fair?! The Bai family must compensate us!”
“Why should our Bai family compensate you? The Shu family sure has some nerve!”
The atmosphere in the study was tense, with nearly ten men and women gathered inside. Clearly, they were divided into two opposing factions, sitting on opposite sofas, neither willing to back down as they argued heatedly.
The flood of memories in her mind helped Shu Xin quickly grasp the situation. Looking at this unfamiliar yet ridiculous scene before her, she found it utterly laughable.
“Heh~”
A soft but distinct scoff instantly silenced both quarreling sides. Everyone’s eyes shifted toward the girl who had been sitting quietly in the single-seater sofa the entire time without uttering a word.
Shu Xin’s calm gaze swept over each person present. A few of them instinctively looked away, unable to meet her eyes.
“Ahem, Xin’er, you see…”
An elder finally broke the awkward silence.
“Grandfather Bai, no need to say more. I understand why you’re here today. I agree to annul the engagement, and I don’t need any compensation. However, I must take back the token my grandfather once entrusted to your family.”
“Xin’er, we can’t annul this engagement! This—”
Hearing that she didn’t want any benefits, Shu Liangjun, who was standing to the side, hurriedly tried to intervene.
“Uncle, this is my decision. Please don’t interfere. Once I’m done dealing with this, we can talk about whatever you want to discuss.”
Before anyone on the opposite side could say anything, Shu Xin directly stated her stance, her eyes unwaveringly meeting Shu Liangjun’s gaze.
Shu Liangjun felt as if she had seen through him, and a chill ran down his spine. In the end, he said nothing more.
“This is only natural. We brought the token with us today. As long as you sign this agreement and acknowledge that the engagement between our two families is null and void, you can take it back.”
Bai Wendie was satisfied with how readily Shu Xin agreed and how she didn’t make any excessive demands. A fleeting trace of disdain flashed through his eyes—so easy to manipulate.
After all, an orphan was just an orphan.
With a wave of his hand, the secretary standing behind him immediately placed a printed annulment agreement and a jewelry box on the coffee table.
The agreement wasn’t long—just a simple declaration that Shu Xin acknowledged the engagement with Bai Zhengchu was officially dissolved, and she had no further ties to the Bai family.
Picking up the jewelry box from the table, Shu Xin confirmed that it was indeed the keepsake her grandfather had given them. Without hesitation, she signed her name.
“Xin’er, although our families have annulled the engagement today, our decades-long friendship remains. Your parents are no longer around, so if you ever encounter difficulties in the future, you can always come to Grandpa Bai—I will have your back.”
With the annulment agreement in hand, the Bai family had accomplished their purpose. Bai Wendie stood up with the Bai family members, offering these courteous words as they left without the slightest pause.
Shu Xin had no intention of taking his words seriously. Wearing a perfectly crafted smile, she saw them off.
One group was dealt with—now, another awaited her attention.
Being thrown into such a situation right after transmigrating… this was definitely a high-difficulty opening!
Taking a deep breath, Shu Xin turned back inside.
“Father, Shu Xin has no respect for you at all! She annulled the engagement with the Bai family without even consulting us. Isn’t that too outrageous?”
Still in the study, Shu Hanyan complained in a displeased tone, skillfully fanning the flames against Shu Xin.
Shu Liangjun’s face darkened, but he remained silent, not refuting Shu Hanyan’s words.
Shu Xin’s attitude had made him uncomfortable. What bothered him most was how a single look from her had made him flinch just now—completely humiliating.
However, he still hadn’t gotten his hands on her shares yet. It wasn’t the time to turn against her.
“Xin’er, I already let you handle the annulment yourself. Now, can we have a proper discussion?”
As Shu Xin stepped back inside, Shu Liangjun locked his gaze onto her.
“Sure. I wonder what Uncle wants to discuss with me today?”
The clearer Shu Xin was about their true intentions, the more innocent she acted on the surface.
“Xin’er, now that your parents are gone, you’re just sitting on those shares. Why not hand them over to me to manage?”
Aunt Wang Shuhong could no longer hold back, speaking eagerly. Her eyes gleamed as she looked at Shu Xin—like a predator eyeing a fat piece of meat.
“But even if I leave those shares untouched, just from the dividends alone, I can live comfortably for a lifetime. There’s no need to trouble you, Uncle.”
Shu Xin responded with a bright smile, effortlessly deflecting her words. The two went back and forth, engaging in a polite yet evasive exchange. Sitting beside them, Shu Liangjun grew impatient.
“Xin’er, if you hand your shares over to me, I can ensure that Shu Corporation stays in the Shu family. Surely, you don’t want to see your grandfather and parents’ hard work go to waste?”
Shu Liangjun had spent decades in the business world and was a cunning old fox. He immediately used family ties to emotionally manipulate her.
If this were the original Shu Xin, she would’ve fallen right into the trap.
Unfortunately for them, the current Shu Xin was no longer the same person.
“But…”
Shu Xin hesitated, looking torn.
“Xin’er, we are your only family now. Wouldn’t it be more reliable to trust us rather than outsiders? Uncle would never treat you unfairly.”
Seeing her hesitation, Shu Liangjun immediately pressed forward, painting an enticing picture to make her agree.
“Alright then, if Uncle truly wants my 49% of the shares, I can sell them all to you for one billion. As soon as the money is transferred, I’ll sign the equity transfer agreement.”
After calculating the market value of her shares, Shu Xin pretended to struggle before speaking. But her words completely stunned Shu Liangjun.
He did want her shares, but he had never intended to pay for them—he wanted them for free!
“Xin—”
Shu Liangjun opened his mouth to argue, but Shu Xin’s next words made him swallow his objections instantly.
“The president of Xinyue Group contacted me recently, offering thirty billion to buy my shares. But since we’re family, I’ll round it down for you. That way, I’m not taking advantage of you.”
“But Uncle, you’ll have to move quickly. Just before you arrived, the president of Xinyue called again, urging me to make a decision soon.”
Shu Liangjun’s heart tightened. He absolutely couldn’t let Shu Xin’s shares fall into Xinyue’s hands. Without hesitation, he agreed.
“Xin’er, if they call again, don’t respond just yet. I’ll gather the funds immediately and bring the money and contract in two days.”
“Alright, but Uncle, you better hurry. Their offer is truly tempting, and I don’t know how long I can hold out.”
Watching Shu Liangjun and his family leave, Shu Xin’s lips curled into a slow smile.
