“You kid, why are you standing here? You scared me! Are you feeling better now?” Brigade leader Zhao asked.
“I’m fine.”
“Good to hear. Come over to my place for lunch at noon. I also want to discuss something with you,” Brigade leader Zhao said, feeling a bit excited about Zhao Rencheng’s reaction to the girl he and his wife had carefully chosen.
Zhao Rencheng nodded. “Alright, I’ll go get some work done first.”
“Wait a minute. Go and deal with the slackers in the team first. They haven’t been doing any work since you’ve been away. Also, talk to Zhao Erhua’s brother. I’ve already spoken to him, but that kid doesn’t listen to me. He’s foolishly letting others take advantage of him.”
Brigade leader Zhao sighed.
Zhao Rencheng nodded in acknowledgment.
He approached Zhao Erhua’s older brother, Zhao Dahua.
Both Zhao Erhua and her brother, Zhao Dahua, stood timidly in front of Zhao Rencheng.
“Aren’t you supposed to be doing your own work?” Zhao Rencheng asked, his thick eyebrows furrowed and his gaze sharp.
Zhao Dahua shook his head, not daring to look up.
Zhao Erhua, being a girl, was also afraid of Zhao Rencheng, but since she had never been beaten by him, she still dared to speak up. “Brother Zhao, my brother was helping me with my work.”
“Helping who? You’re married? Since when? I didn’t know about that,” Zhao Rencheng asked, his eyelids flickering, exuding an intimidating aura.
Zhao Erhua felt her scalp tingle under his sharp gaze and began to stammer. “I… I…”
Zhao Rencheng frowned and then called out to Wu Donglin. “Did you ask her to do the work?”
Wu Donglin, who was somewhat disoriented, shook his head in denial.
Zhao Erhua wanted to say something but hesitated.
She and Wu Zhiqing, had been chatting frequently and were almost in a relationship. Why wasn’t Wu Zhiqing cooperating with her now?
Zhao Rencheng’s gaze swept over Wu Donglin, his brow slightly furrowed. He then warned the siblings, “Zhao Dahua, Zhao Erhua, go back to work. If I catch you slacking off again, your work points will be confiscated. Do you hear me?”
“Yes!!”
The siblings responded instinctively.
Zhao Dahua, even more afraid of Zhao Rencheng than his sister, quickly grabbed his tools and left. If he, at his age, got beaten by Brother Zhao again, it would be so embarrassing.
And painful…
Brother Zhao’s beatings hurt so much.
Wuwuwu…
Even though it was a memory from when he was seven, he would remember it for a lifetime.
Zhao Erhua pursed her lips, silently cursing her brother for being useless, and then slinked away.
Now, only Wu Donglin was left facing Zhao Rencheng.
Wu Donglin swallowed hard. “Um, I’ll go get to work.”
Zhao Rencheng nodded.
He turned and left.
On his way, he casually picked up a wooden stick and approached a group of slackers who were happily chatting and eating sunflower seeds.
“Brother Zhao, I’ll go work right away!”
“Uncle, I’m leaving now.”
“Stop!” Zhao Rencheng shouted.
The five of them froze in place.
There was no point in running; they wouldn’t be able to escape anyway, so they didn’t even try to struggle.
“Tongsheng, you stay. I have something to discuss with you.”
“What is it?” Zhao Tongsheng looked miserable, clasping his hands together in a pleading gesture. “Uncle, I really haven’t caused any trouble recently. I’ve just been seeing a girl and went to the neighboring team to help her with some work. As a man, it’s normal to help my future father-in-law with work, right?”
“You’ve been seeing a girl?” Zhao Rencheng weighed the wooden stick in his hand.
“Yeah,” Zhao Tongsheng was on the verge of tears. “I won’t go anymore, okay?”
The other four watched the scene with amusement.
Since it wasn’t them, they weren’t worried!
Zhao Rencheng said, “After lunch, I’ll come to your house. Tell your dad not to go to school too early.”
“Oh, okay.”
Zhao Tongsheng let out a long sigh of relief and quickly left.
His original name was Tongsheng.
But in recent years, with the turmoil outside, his father had changed his name out of fear that something might happen to him.
But deep down, his father still hoped that he would study hard.
Unfortunately, he had never been cut out for studying!
He didn’t mind working, though.
It was just that his grandparents were too biased. He didn’t want to work for the family, and sometimes he even envied his uncle, who had become independent. He had once suggested to his father that they split the household, but after being scolded, the idea was dropped.
Recently, he was about to get married.
Even getting a room for himself had caused arguments.
But Zhao Tongsheng felt that his uncle was closer to them than his own family.
After returning home at noon, he told his father about his uncle’s visit. “Uncle wants to talk to you. He said not to go to school too early.”
“Did you cause trouble again?”
“If I caused trouble, Uncle would have dealt with me. Why would he need you?” Zhao Tongsheng was speechless and also a bit curious about why his uncle was coming to their house.
They waited and waited.
But after a long time, Zhao Rencheng still hadn’t shown up.
It wasn’t that Zhao Rencheng was standing them up; it was just that…
He couldn’t get away!
“I don’t want to get married, and I don’t want to go on blind dates!” Zhao Rencheng felt a bit irritable just thinking about a girl knowing about the things he had done.
“Why not? How old are you already!” Brigade leader Zhao glared at him.
If he weren’t so weak in a fight, he would have beaten the brat up!
“The girl your aunt and I found is not only good-looking but also gentle, hardworking, and comes from a decent family. If it weren’t for your aunt stepping in, such a good girl wouldn’t even be available to you.”
“Look at you. Although you’re tall, strong, and can work hard, and you have money too, who can put up with that temper of yours? Now that we’ve found someone for you, you dare to be picky!”
“I’m telling you, if you don’t find someone now, by the time I arrange something for you, it’ll only be with a divorcee.”
“You’re a young man. Don’t you want a woman?”
Brigade leader Zhao was genuinely puzzled.
He had even asked his son about it, and his son said that the brat was well-equipped.
He seemed perfectly fine!!
Why was he so indifferent!
Zhao Rencheng pinched the bridge of his nose. “I know what I’m doing.”
“You know what you’re doing? You know nothing! You’re 25 already. Do you still think you’re young? Look at your peers. Who doesn’t have kids by now?”
“I’m not going!” Zhao Rencheng firmly refused.
Brigade leader Zhao scolded him harshly again.
Shi Yanchun, on the other hand, tried to persuade Zhao Rencheng gently. The couple used a combination of toughness and softness, hoping to convince him.
“I’m not going!” Zhao Rencheng repeated the same three words.
Seeing that he was truly unwilling, Shi Yanchun decided to take a softer approach. “Fine, you don’t have to go, but at least tell us when you plan to bring a girl home?”
Zhao Rencheng remained silent for a moment before saying, “I already told you, I need to go see Tongsheng’s dad. If I don’t go soon, he’ll get angry.”
Zhao Rencheng stood up and added, “Don’t call that girl over. I don’t want to embarrass her or ruin her reputation.”
With that, he strode out.
Brigade leader Zhao wanted to curse but instead slapped his thigh in frustration. “Who would even want him!”
“Ah, Rencheng might be disillusioned with family life. You know how chaotic his family is.”
“Chaotic my foot! He could handle that family in no time. I think he just doesn’t want to settle down. Don’t make excuses for him. Next time I see him, I’ll scold him again. Let’s see how long he can hold out!”
“Alright.”
Shi Yanchun also hoped that Zhao Rencheng would get married.
Being alone is so lonely.
He doesn’t even have someone to share his thoughts with. At night, it’s just boring…
