Deng Damei closed her eyes, letting her mind wander.
Suddenly, she heard He Xiaoxiao speak up. “You’re pretty good at cutting hair.”
Zhang Yunxi boasted, “Of course! I’m a professional!”
Back in university, she had made money cutting hair.
Deng Damei was curious about what Zhang Yunxi had done to her hair.
Zhang Yunxi grabbed a mirror and held it up. “Ta-da! Look! Isn’t it super pretty?”
Strictly speaking, Deng Damei had decent facial features. Her eyes were bright, and she had adorable dimples on either side of her mouth. She should have looked very attractive.
But her high forehead and slicked-back hairstyle, which was practically glued to her scalp, had taken away much of her charm.
Her hair had been ridiculously long—down to her hips. Zhang Yunxi had cut it to waist-length and trimmed it neatly to make it look more natural.
Now, with bangs, her sweetness shone through. Her features looked more balanced, and her big eyes, with their soft under-eye contours, along with her dimples, made her look even more charming when she smiled.
Deng Damei blinked in disbelief.
She suspected the mirror was playing tricks on her.
“T-This is me?”
“Who else would it be?” Zhang Yunxi raised an eyebrow.
“It looks so good,” Deng Damei murmured in awe. “Yunxi, you’re amazing. You can do everything.”
“This is nothing,” Zhang Yunxi waved her hand modestly, though her grin was as bright as ever.
Deng Damei took the mirror and tilted it back and forth, feeling like she had been transformed into a whole new person.
She stared and stared—
Even forgetting about her boyfriend.
Before going to bed, she kept glancing at her reflection.
Meanwhile, hairstylist Zhang Yunxi was very proud of her work.
Once she was sure Deng Damei had fallen asleep, she got up quietly and rushed toward the mountain.
At the foot of the mountain, Zhao Rencheng was already waiting. “I thought you weren’t coming.”
Since the autumn harvest had just ended, he had expected Zhang Yunxi to take a proper rest.
Zhang Yunxi snorted. “I’m a diligent person!”
Zhao Rencheng remained expressionless.
After they climbed the mountain, he set her to work while he set up a grill and started roasting a chicken.
“Damn! You’re having barbecue? What kind of divine life is this?” Zhang Yunxi stared at the roasting chicken, already salivating.
“It’s slow-cooked. It’ll take another half an hour,” Zhao Rencheng said.
“Alright.” Zhang Yunxi continued working but couldn’t help asking, “Where’d you get the chicken? I never saw you raising any.”
“Caught it in the back mountain.”
Zhao Rencheng lived halfway up the mountain, partly for trade but also because he had considered the back mountain his territory since childhood. He could catch wild boars, hares, and pheasants whenever he wanted. He no longer had to force himself to eat them on the spot, like when he was a child. Living on the mountain gave him the freedom to enjoy his meals at his leisure.
Zhang Yunxi’s jaw dropped. “Isn’t the back mountain supposed to be dangerous? Didn’t they warn everyone to stay away?”
“I have a gun, I’m strong, I’ve trained in the military, and I know where the animals are. I won’t get hurt.”
Seeing her eagerness, he mercilessly crushed her hopes. “I go in to hunt. You’d go in to become food.”
“Hey!”
Zhang Yunxi puffed up her cheeks and glared at him.
Zhao Rencheng stood up. “I’m going to add some seasoning.”
Zhang Yunxi rolled her eyes.
So unfair.
Why didn’t she have super strength?
She struck a “strongman” pose and pinched her own arm.
Alright… there wasn’t even a hint of muscle.
Frustrated, she continued cutting fabric while the aroma of roast chicken gradually filled the air.
“It’s done. Come eat.” Zhao Rencheng had set the table, even adding some wild grapes.
“Wow, this is the life.”
Zhang Yunxi sat down, and they each took half a chicken.
The skin was crispy, the inside flavorful. The breast meat was a little dry, but just having meat at all was already a luxury. The sweet and sour wild grapes were the perfect way to balance the greasiness.
Zhang Yunxi was so comfortable that she wished she could just move in.
“Brother Zhao, you’re seriously talented! This is the best roast chicken I’ve ever had! You’re amazing—not only can you cook well, but you’re also so generous. It’s my luck to be able to feast like this with you…”
“Stop.”
Zhao Rencheng saw right through her.
She was just buttering him up so he’d cook for her again next time.
“Oh, come on, I know you’re just being humble.”
Caught red-handed, Zhang Yunxi remained completely shameless.
But even though she had a great appetite, she simply couldn’t finish half a chicken.
The wild pheasants Zhao Rencheng caught were nothing like modern farmed chickens. They were much meatier—half a bird weighed over a pound.
“I can’t finish this. Can I take it away?”
“Do what you want.”
Zhao Rencheng had no problem finishing his portion.
Zhang Yunxi packed up the leftovers and got back to work.
Under the dim night sky, they eventually finished and started heading down the mountain.
Suddenly, from the woods, came a familiar sound—soft moans and gasps.
Zhang Yunxi’s eyes lit up.
Last time, she had been so exhausted that she nearly passed out and hadn’t been able to figure out who it was!
But now, she was wide awake.
Crouching down, she tried to sneak closer and see which couple was getting frisky in the wild.
But before she could get far, fate quite literally grabbed her by the throat.
Zhang Yunxi clutched her neck and whispered fiercely, “What are you doing?!”
“Don’t look. Don’t listen.”
Standing behind her, Zhao Rencheng covered her ears and eyes with his large hands.
Zhang Yunxi struggled but couldn’t break free.
She wanted to kick him.
Then Zhao Rencheng’s low voice came from behind. “If you make a scene, they’ll notice us.”
“Fine! Just let go!”
Not wanting to get caught eavesdropping, Zhang Yunxi hissed back quietly.
“Promise me you won’t go.” Zhao Rencheng bargained.
Zhang Yunxi clenched her jaw, arms akimbo.
So annoying!
She really wanted to see who it was.
In the grass, the couple reached their peak, like a surge of electricity coursing through their bodies.
The woman, even more lost in pleasure, wrapped her arms around the man’s head, fingers tangling into his hair.
The man let out a deep, furious roar.
Even with her ears covered, Zhang Yunxi could hear it loud and clear.
This wild couple clearly had no fear of being caught.
Of course, Zhao Rencheng wasn’t pressing his hands too tightly. He wasn’t fully restraining her—just making sure she couldn’t see or hear too much.
Frustrated, Zhang Yunxi tore his hands away and, before he could react, landed a punch on him.
Only then was she satisfied.
Zhao Rencheng muttered, “You’re way too violent.”
“You look so fierce, yet you’re calling me violent? That’s not very convincing,” Zhang Yunxi shot back.
Zhao Rencheng had no retort.
Zhang Yunxi shook her head smugly.
Zhao Rencheng was genuinely confused.
Why was she not embarrassed at all?
Instead of blushing and looking away, she was excited and curious?
Not one to hold back, he asked outright, “Why aren’t you embarrassed?”
“Why aren’t you?” Zhang Yunxi countered.
Caught off guard, Zhao Rencheng was momentarily stunned.
Why?
He didn’t know.
He had just assumed girls would be more easily embarrassed.
Zhang Yunxi added, “We’re all human. Adults, especially, get curious about this stuff—it’s perfectly normal. I just wanted to see who it was, not commit a crime. Besides, sex is completely natural. Everyone has desires—men and women alike.”
