Chapter 160: How Could the Marquis Not Believe in Me?
The test results showed that there was no presence of “Forgetfulness Worm” in the medicine either.
This was truly unexpected!
Ye Xin Ran collected all the previous test results and went through them again from start to finish. Each of them indicated that there was no “Forgetfulness Worm” present.
Then where did the toxin in Leng Qing Yu’s blood come from?
Ye Xin Ran thought for a moment.
She decided to ask Lu Chang Qing tomorrow.
That evening, at the Wei Mansion.
Lu Ting En was lying sideways on the bed, watching Leng Qing Yu combing her hair.
“Qing Yu, have you been taking your medicine properly lately? I feel like your complexion has gotten a bit better.”
Leng Qing Yu curved her lips into a smile. “Why are you asking about this? If I didn’t take my medicine properly, could my complexion possibly improve?”
“Oh, yes, yes, what am I saying! I was just thinking, since we’re already here in Yun Tong County, should we find a famous local doctor to check on you and maybe prescribe some other medicine?”
Leng Qing Yu lay down beside Lu Ting En.
“No need.”
She rested her head on Lu Ting En’s shoulder.
“Those medicines are terribly bitter. Even if they are miraculous, I don’t want to take them anymore.”
The Marquis reached out and gently touched Leng Qing Yu’s hair.
“You’re already grown up, why are you acting like a child, even complaining about taking medicine?”
“I’m not!” Leng Qing Yu responded. “I’ve just taken too much. Over these years, I’ve had enough of this bitterness.”
“Alright, alright. If you don’t want to take them, we’ll stop for a few days. But for your health, you will still need to take them in the end, especially that sugar pill. Remember to carry it with you.”
“I know!”
Leng Qing Yu nodded and coquettishly said, “You’re speaking so much today.”
“Isn’t it because I’m worried about your health?”
The Marquis helped Leng Qing Yu pull the blanket up.
The two of them each lay down.
As the Marquis’s snoring gradually grew louder, Leng Qing Yu still couldn’t fall asleep.
She had shown her daughter all the medicines she had been taking recently, but she hadn’t shown her the “sugar pill.”
When the Marquis mentioned it earlier, Leng Qing Yu almost forgot that this was also a medicine she took regularly.
This medicine was prescribed by a doctor from Shun Yi Tang, whom the Marquis had specially sought out.
Taking one before bed would help her sleep.
If she had a severe headache, it would also work to relieve the pain.
The reason she hadn’t remembered it before was partly because she usually took it as a candy, not treating it as a proper medicine.
The other reason was that this medicine had been specially prepared by the Marquis, and she didn’t want to doubt him. Consequently, she also didn’t want to doubt the medicine the Marquis had prepared for her.
But at this moment, she couldn’t help but think that she should show her daughter the sugar pill as well.
Leng Qing Yu felt a bit confused about her own thoughts.
When had her trust in the Marquis started to waver?
That night, she had an unsettled sleep.
The next day, after breakfast, she asked Butler Tong to prepare a carriage. She wanted to personally go to Yun Bian Village.
Lu Zhi Yi came from the back courtyard.
She first inquired about her mother’s health, and then said, “Mother, didn’t you say before that you would take me to get familiar with the business here? The weather is nice today, and Aunt doesn’t have anything urgent. How about we go to the shop?”
Leng Qing Yu felt a little awkward.
Half a month ago, she would have immediately taken Lu Zhi Yi there without hesitation.
But now, she needed to think carefully.
To be precise, she didn’t want to take Lu Zhi Yi there anymore.
“Zhi Yi, these days, I’ve been busy buying things for Xin Ran’s family, and I really can’t spare the time. There’s no rush with the business, I’ll teach you slowly later.”
“I understand, Mother!”
Leng Zhi Yi lowered her gaze.
She was a bit upset but tried to appear strong. “Sister is your biological daughter, and it’s only right for you to worry about her. It’s my fault for making you distracted, Mother.”
Seeing Lu Zhi Yi with this expression, Leng Qing Yu realized that the Marquis had told her the truth about the matter.
For some reason, Leng Qing Yu felt no ripples in her heart.
She found it strange.
It seemed that her heart had truly shifted.
With Ye Xin Ran around, she no longer cared for Lu Zhi Yi as much.
This was the child she had raised since childhood!
Leng Qing Yu tried to comfort herself with these thoughts and also reassured Lu Zhi Yi, saying, “Zhi Yi, don’t think too much. You know that although Xin Ran is our biological daughter, over the years, the love and care we’ve shown you has never been any less. I only hope that the three of you can get along well and help each other in the future.”
“I understand, Mother. I will treat Sister and Chang Qing well.”
“Good child.”
Leng Qing Yu patted her shoulder and turned to leave.
Behind her, Lu Zhi Yi watched her retreating figure, and her expression grew colder.
“She promised to leave the family business to me. Why is she changing her mind halfway? Why is it that the moment she comes back, she has everything?”
Chun Tao saw the expression on Lu Zhi Yi’s face and quickly reminded her, “Miss, this is the Wei residence. You need to be more careful.”
“Are you feeling unwell? Should I call a doctor to take a look at you?”
“No need!”
Lu Zhi Yi stomped her foot hard, took a deep breath, and then returned to her usual demeanor.
“Ye Xin Ran is nothing but a pitiful creature clinging to life. We’ll see how things unfold.”
…
Leng Qing Yu got into the carriage, first stopping at the city’s jewelry shop to pick up the pieces of jewelry she had ordered some days ago.
Afterward, she turned the carriage toward Yun Bian Village.
Throughout the journey, she kept feeling as though someone was watching her.
But each time she lifted the carriage curtain to check, she saw no sign of anyone following.
Leng Qing Yu began to feel nervous.
She didn’t want to cause trouble for her daughter because of her actions.
She had the carriage go in circles around the city, making several rounds. It wasn’t until the eighth round that she finally spotted the shadow of someone following her.
“Qing Su, why are you following me?”
Leng Qing Yu saw a familiar figure quickly turn away as she opened the carriage curtain. She called out to stop him.
The person stiffened at the sound of his name, and after a long pause, he awkwardly turned around and bowed to Leng Qing Yu. “Madam, I was ordered by the Marquis to protect your safety. Please do not be offended.”
“The Marquis sent you to secretly protect me? Has something happened?” Leng Qing Yu asked, confused.
Qing Su answered respectfully, “Madam, I do not know the details. I am only tasked with ensuring your safety.”
“Go back and tell the Marquis that I am perfectly safe here. There is no need for anyone to follow me!”
Leng Qing Yu’s voice was cold.
The Marquis hadn’t told her anything but had suddenly sent someone to follow her. Was it for protection or surveillance?
Leng Qing Yu thought for a moment and then shook her head.
She must have been overthinking. How could the Marquis not trust her?
She turned and glanced back at Qing Su.
She saw him freeze for a moment, as if hesitating whether to continue following her or leave.
After a brief moment, he did not follow her but turned and walked in the opposite direction.
