Chapter 49: Treating Only Those with Fate

“My lord, the young lady I saw that day is the one right there.”

As Wei Jing Zhi and the village head were talking, the little book boy beside him suddenly pointed to the approaching Ye Xin Ran and reminded him.

Wei Jing Zhi followed the direction the book boy was pointing and saw that it was indeed the person who had helped him detoxify a few days ago.

Wasn’t this the person she had left on the mountain that day? How did he find her here?

For example, you and Madam Ye might not have any particular connection, but if you can help our village by ensuring that the children here can all go to school…”

“…or perhaps even build a school in the village. That would be a kind of fate, wouldn’t it?”

The little book boy immediately stepped forward to scold, “My lord’s status is too noble to be easily invited by the likes of you.”

Wei Jing Zhi raised a hand to stop him, not responding to the village head’s words but instead turning to look at Ye Xin Ran. “Do you agree with this, Madam?”

The village head, worried that Ye Xin Ran might not have such an idea, quickly pulled Chang An, Chang Sheng into his arms and winked at Ye Xin Ran. “Madam Ye, what do you think?”

Ye Xin Ran smiled and said to Wei Jing Zhi, “Indeed, that is my thought as well. If I can treat your lady’s illness, I hope you, Wei Jing Zhi, can help our village with the problem of children going to school.”

“Good!” Wei Jing Zhi looked at Ye Xin Ran with approval. He had expected her to ask for money, but instead, she had proposed the condition of building a school.

“Then I will trouble you, Madam. Time is of the essence, please, let us be on our way.”

“Today won’t work. Treating an illness is a serious matter, and I still have two children to arrange for. Wei Jing Zhi, please send a carriage tomorrow to pick me up. Once I’ve settled everything, I will come.”

“That’s fine!” Wei Jing Zhi immediately agreed.

After they left, the villagers were still gathered at the village entrance, talking among themselves.

“Madam Ye, you really are skilled in medicine?”

“Just a little,” Ye Xin Ran modestly replied.

“Impossible! That Wei Jing Zhi is a high-ranking person who came back from the capital to recuperate. If it were only a little, how could you have cured his wife’s illness?”

“Yes, now that you mention it, is Madam Ye’s skill better than the doctors in the capital’s medical halls?”

The villagers praised her, but the village head quickly shooed them away:

“Alright, alright, stop crowding around! Madam Ye has important matters to attend to. She needs to prepare for tomorrow’s consultation, so everyone, please disperse!”

After the crowd left, the village head lowered his voice and asked, “Madam Ye, do you really know medicine?”

Ye Xin Ran laughed, “Uncle Li, is it too late for you to ask me that now?”

The village head rubbed his hands together. “Ah, I was too excited earlier. I just couldn’t miss this opportunity.

But can you really do it? If you can’t, I’ll go to the city and find a doctor to go with you tomorrow. We don’t have to force it.”

Ye Xin Ran glanced into the distance. “There’s no need. I’ll go by myself tomorrow and see how it goes.”

“Alright, alright!” The village head still wasn’t at ease, but he added, “Then make sure to prepare well.”

Ye Xin Ran didn’t feel she needed much preparation.

However, this would be her first time treating someone since coming to this world, so she was a bit nervous.

That evening, the three children expressed their worries about Ye Xin Ran treating someone the next day.

“Aunt, are you really good at treating illnesses? If not, why don’t you skip it tomorrow? I’ll tell them it was me who gave the needles to Wei Jing Zhi, and they can’t do anything to me!” Chang An, Chang Sheng volunteered.

Seeing their worried little faces, Ye Xin Ran comforted them, “Don’t worry, Aunt knows what she’s doing.”

The next morning, she woke up early, steamed some buns, enough for the three children for the day. After a quick tidying up, she grabbed a basket and went to the village entrance.

The basket only contained two buns, as she wasn’t sure whether the host family would provide food, so she brought her own.

Also, doctors in this era typically carried a medical kit when going out to see patients, and she felt that it wouldn’t look right to go empty-handed.

When she arrived at the village entrance, the carriage from yesterday was already there.

The little book boy saw her and immediately jumped down from the carriage. “My master asked me to wait here for Madam Ye.”

“Then let’s go.”

Ye Xin Ran said, stepping into the carriage. She followed the book boy as they made their way toward Wei Jing Zhi’s residence.
