Chapter 80: The Elegance of Having a Wife
After the meal, Ye Xin Ran quickly cleaned up and urged everyone to head down the mountain.
The group worked together to lift Xiao Huai’an onto the recliner, and it was effortless to carry him.
With six people carrying the chair, they took turns in shifts, so no one felt tired during the descent.
Hu Zi followed them for a while, but when they reached the foot of the mountain, Ye Xin Ran turned around and realized that the tiger had disappeared.
It was a wild animal, after all. It probably preferred to stay in the mountains.
Ye Xin Ran felt a bit regretful.
When they reached the entrance of Yun Bian Village, a few villagers were heading home after finishing their work. Upon seeing Xiao Huai’an lying in the recliner, they were shocked.
“What happened?”
“Yeah, why was he taken up sitting, but is coming back lying down?”
“Was he attacked by a wild animal on the mountain?”
“That shouldn’t be, Xiao Huai’an has always been tough. He’s been to the village for so long, and he’s never been this injured before.”
At this point, everyone’s gaze shifted to Ye Xin Ran.
“How did something like this happen when they went up the mountain together? Could it be…?”
“Impossible! Ye Nian Zhi is such a fortunate person.”
Everyone shook their heads but still came over to lend a hand.
Together, they managed to carry Xiao Huai’an back into the yard. Several of the hunters set him down and were about to leave.
“Xiao Da Ge, Sao Zi, we’re leaving.”
Xiao Chai looked around the yard.
Previously, Old Li had said Xiao Huai’an might be wealthy, but looking at the state of this place, it was worse than his own dilapidated house. No matter how you looked at it, this couldn’t be the home of a wealthy person.
They had accepted such a heavy gift from Xiao Huai’an earlier, and it really didn’t seem right.
“Don’t leave, stay and have a meal before you go!”
Ye Xin Ran called out to them.
The men waved their hands, declining. With such a shabby yard and three children to feed, they couldn’t stay. They would end up eating up half a month’s worth of food if they did.
They hurriedly packed up their bamboo chairs and left.
Chang Sheng and the others, seeing their second uncle in this state, were all red-eyed.
“Second Uncle, what happened to you?”
“Second Uncle, is your leg worse now? Will you never be able to walk again? Oh…”
Chang Ping cried especially sorrowfully.
“Be careful what you say, you crow’s mouth!”
Chang Sheng tried to act mature, but couldn’t hide the worry in his eyes.
Xiao Huai’an wanted to say he was fine, but none of the children believed him.
“We were ambushed by wild animals on the mountain,” Ye Xin Ran explained. “Luckily, your second uncle is strong, and he managed to drive the animals away, but he got injured on his leg and needs to rest for a while.”
“Will he be the same after he recovers?” Chang An asked, tilting his small head.
“Of course he will!” Ye Xin Ran said confidently.
Not only would he be the same as before he went up the mountain, but he would be just as he was before the injury.
Because Xiao Huai’an was injured, the children seemed to become more sensible.
They took the initiative to care for his daily needs, and the small chores around the house were no longer something Ye Xin Ran had to worry about.
With this extra time, Ye Xin Ran sorted out the herbs she had dug up, planting half of them in the mountains and using the other half to make medicine.
During this period, the children also helped her collect some more Ice Spirit Flowers, which had already been planted in the mountains.
Ye Xin Ran looked at the rows of Ice Spirit Flowers growing in the mountains, and she felt incredibly pleased.
“Everyone has been really diligent these days. Whenever they had free time, they’d go to the mountains to check on things, and so the flowers have been growing more and more!” the village head said with a smile as he reported to Ye Xin Ran.
“I thought these flowers would be hard to find, but I never expected the villagers to be so resourceful!”
“Well, it’s because you’re paying well!” the village head replied with a grin. “No one’s interested in picking a weed, but when it comes to finding money, who wouldn’t be tempted?”
“But you’ve planted so many of these herbs already, what exactly do you plan to do with them? If you keep looking for more, will you have enough money in your pockets?” he asked, concerned.
“Enough, there’s no such thing as too much! The more, the better!” Ye Xin Ran said confidently.
The more herbs there were, the more money she would make in the future.
The day for Madam Leng’s reexamination arrived.
Ye Xin Ran had just finished getting ready in the morning when the Wei family’s carriage arrived at the front gate.
The villagers had already come to accept that Ye Xin Ran could treat illnesses, but seeing such a luxurious carriage come to take her to her appointment still left them in disbelief.
“Ye Nian Zhi is really that skilled at medicine?” one of the villagers murmured in amazement.
“Yeah, didn’t you see? That’s a carriage from a wealthy family, specifically sent to pick her up. If she wasn’t skilled, would they come for her?”
“Then if she’s really that skilled, why doesn’t she work in a clinic to treat people?”
“Clinics are all run by male doctors. How many female doctors have you seen out in public?”
“I guess Ye Nian Zhi probably specializes in treating women’s ailments. Even if her medical skills aren’t the best, it’s more convenient for a woman to treat another woman. In big households, they value gender separation, so they asked Ye Nian Zhi, a female doctor, to come.”
“That makes sense!”
After hearing Liu Lin’s words, everyone agreed.
That must be it.
If her medical skills were truly that great, how could she be staying in such a small village?
The young servant in the carriage noticed right away that Ye Xin Ran looked different from before.
But it took him a moment to figure out what had changed.
“Ye… Ye Doctor, what happened to the scar on your face?”
Ye Xin Ran touched her left cheek and smiled. “It’s gone! I still find it a bit strange to touch it now!”
“How… how did such a big scar disappear so quickly? Ye Doctor, what kind of miraculous medicine did you use?”
Ye Xin Ran shook her head. “There’s no miraculous medicine, I just mixed up some herbs myself!”
Mixed… mixed up?
The young servant was stunned.
She just mixed up some herbs and it worked this well?
Did she even know how in demand scar-removal medicine was in the capital?
The carriage soon arrived at the Wei estate.
The maidservant waiting by the door had been waiting for a long time. As soon as she saw Ye Xin Ran step down from the carriage, she hurried over to greet her.
The maidservant’s sharp eyes immediately noticed the change in Ye Xin Ran’s face.
But unlike the scholar, she didn’t have the courage to ask outright. She could only glance at Ye Xin Ran’s face furtively as they walked.
After Ye Xin Ran’s scars had healed, she looked even more beautiful, with a certain dignified charm, almost as if she now had the aura of the mistress.
Ye Xin Ran paid no attention to the maidservant’s glances and followed her to Madam Leng’s bedroom.
Madam Leng was sitting in the front hall, making tea. When she heard footsteps outside, she immediately stood up and came out to greet her.
The moment Madam Leng saw Ye Xin Ran, she was stunned.
