Chapter 63
As they came out of the cinema, Xu Di was about to go home.
“Comrade Xu, I’ll walk you home.”
“Comrade Zhang, I’ll go back by myself. Your arm is still injured. It’s not suitable for you to be squeezed on the bus.”
Xu Di didn’t let Zhang Chaoyang walk her home. She was used to being independent. Besides, she genuinely thought it wasn’t suitable for Comrade Zhang’s arm to be squeezed on the bus.
“Alright, I’ll walk you to the bus stop. Once you get on the bus, I’ll go back.”
Zhang Chaoyang compromised. He couldn’t leave without walking her a little way. It wouldn’t feel right.
“Okay, I’ll get on the bus, and then you go back. You have to take care of your arm.”
Since they had agreed to be a couple, Xu Di also tried to adjust her attitude.
She couldn’t act like a real eighteen or nineteen-year-old girl, shy and bashful, with butterflies in her stomach.
A young body housed a heart that had experienced a lot of life. She couldn’t be shy anymore.
Zhang Chaoyang walked Xu Di to the bus stop and then turned back home.
“You’re back so soon? Didn’t you walk Xu Di home?”
As soon as Zhang Chaoyang entered the house, his grandmother anxiously asked.
“No, Comrade Xu said my arm is injured and it’s not suitable for me to be squeezed on the bus.
I think she wants to digest what I said quietly.”
“What did you say? You scared the girl so much that she didn’t let you walk her home?
Didn’t Aunt Wang say Xu Di agreed to be a couple? Did you change your mind later?”
Grandma Qian was anxious. Her relieved heart was lifted again.
“Grandma, no. Don’t worry. I told Comrade Xu everything about my family.
About you and Grandpa, my mother’s domineering nature, my brother and sister-in-law not getting along, and my sister being arrogant and overbearing.”
“You have to be clear. Don’t just say the good things. Chaoyang, did Xu Di know you’re my grandson?”
Grandma Qian realized that Xu Di knew. She knew that she was Chaoyang’s grandmother.
“Yes, she knows.”
“Did Xu Di get angry?”
Chaoyang looked at his grandmother, who was very nervous. It seemed she truly liked Comrade Xu.
There really was such a thing as chemistry between people.
He didn’t care about his sister as much. They didn’t like each other.
“She didn’t get angry. I think Comrade Xu was even happy to know you’re my grandmother.
She said that knowing you’re my grandmother gave her more confidence in her future life.”
For a moment, Zhang Chaoyang felt that Comrade Xu liked his grandmother more.
Although he had never been in a relationship.
But he hadn’t eaten pork, but he had seen pigs run. Especially in high school, many classmates and friends had been secretly dating.
He didn’t see any shyness on Comrade Xu’s face, except when they first met and she stared at him for a while.
After that, they were both quite calm. Comrade Xu kept asking questions, thinking things through clearly.
However, Zhang Chaoyang thought it was good. They had met through a blind date and didn’t know each other well. They would get to know each other better in the future and gradually enter each other’s hearts.
“It’s good that she didn’t get angry. I was really afraid of losing such a good friend.
Chaoyang, your job means you’ll spend less time with your family.
So, if you really marry Xu Di, you have to learn to respect and cherish your wife.
Acknowledge her contributions to the family and her merits.
Half of your future military medals will be her credit.
Being a husband and father isn’t just about coming home with money.
Grandma worked at the Women’s Federation for so many years. She’s seen too many family conflicts.
You have to learn to cherish your wife. She’s the one who will be with you for life.
There will always be family conflicts. In the end, how things turn out depends on whether the husband knows how to handle things.
You have to stand firmly by your wife’s side. Don’t let her feel that you care more about your family than her.
You can’t be with her all the time, so you have to give her enough security.”
Grandma Qian had handled too many family disputes. Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law conflicts were common, but if the husband could handle the relationship well, it would be much easier.
Many mothers-in-law enjoy their daughter-in-law’s care but treat them like outsiders in their hearts. They don’t know how to cherish them, so how can there not be conflicts?
People are made of flesh and blood. Whether it’s genuine or fake, you can tell over time.
“Grandma, I know. I’ll learn well and be a good husband and father in the future.”
“I believe in the grandson I raised. He will be a responsible man.
Oh dear, I wonder if Xu Di’s parents will agree.
It would be great if you two could get married sooner. You’re not young anymore.
I have to see if I have enough money for the three turns and one ring.”
Grandma Qian hummed a folk song from her hometown and went to check her little treasury.
Zhang Chaoyang hadn’t heard his grandmother hum this tune in a long time. It was truly nostalgic.
As for Xu Di, she got off the bus and went straight home.
Because she was going to meet Zhang Chaoyang, she had told Jin Weidong in advance that she wouldn’t be delivering goods for a while.
She didn’t know what kind of soldier Zhang Chaoyang was, but soldiers had strong vigilance and investigative skills. She didn’t want her cover to be blown.
Xu Di entered the compound, greeted the neighbors she knew, and went straight upstairs to her home.
Everyone was home today.
Xu’s father, Xu’s mother, Xu’s elder brother, and his wife were all home. Even Xu Jun hadn’t gone out.
“You’re all home. Why didn’t you go out?”
“What do you think? Of course, we’re waiting for you to come back. Little Sister, Mom and Dad are anxious. Tell us quickly, what does the guy look like? What’s his family like? What did you talk about? Did you decide to be a couple?”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law had a good relationship with Xu Di, so she spoke casually and didn’t hold back.
“Your sister-in-law asked what we want to know. Tell us quickly.”
Xu Di knew she had to explain everything clearly, otherwise, it wouldn’t be easy to pass this hurdle.
She put her bag down, and Xu Jun brought her a chair and told her to sit down and talk.
“Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister-in-law, Little Jun, I’ve told you, listen.
Zhang Chaoyang’s parents are both in the military district. His father is in charge of logistics, and his mother is an accountant at the military district hospital.
He grew up with his grandmother. His parents basically didn’t care about him.
I also know his grandmother. She’s Grandma Qian, who has a good relationship with Aunt Wang. I mentioned her to you before.
She’s also an old revolutionary. Before she retired, she was the chairman of the city’s Women’s Federation.
He also has an older brother who is married. He has a pair of twin siblings, a sister in the art troupe and a brother studying at the Workers’, Peasants’, and Soldiers’ University.
That’s basically it. He’s in a unit in the south. He’s a deputy battalion commander. His salary is not low, and he also has allowances.”
Xu Di told her family what Zhang Chaoyang had told her about his family. As for the children his grandfather had with his second wife, Xu Di didn’t ask. It was a bit too far removed.
“He’s a high-ranking official’s child!”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law exclaimed. Their family was quite different from theirs!
“Xu Di, do his parents know about your situation?”
“They probably don’t. His grandmother makes the decisions about his affairs. His parents have no right to interfere.”
That was Zhang Chaoyang’s exact words. Xu Di just repeated them.
Xu’s father and mother didn’t speak for a long time. They were thinking, could their Xu Di handle such conditions and such a family?
The living room fell into a brief silence. No one spoke.
