Chapter 15
Bai Yan suffered a loss once, so she was not stubborn this time. She obediently followed Meng Hechuan out of the shooting range.
Only then did she realize that there was an inconspicuous little arch next to the entrance to the shooting range.
Xiao Zhou was waiting for them at the archway. When he saw Bai Yan, he apologized to her quietly, “I’m sorry. I usually take the shortcut to the shooting range when I go to the back, so I forgot to tell you that non-related personnel have to go around the archway.”
Bai Yan gave him a resentful look, and secretly made a note to only listen to half of what Xiao Zhou said in the future.
Although there was a misunderstanding, it was indeed much more convenient with Meng Hechuan leading the way.
But there is always a trade-off.
Bai Yan enjoyed the convenience of Meng Hechuan’s leading the way, but she had to endure his questioning along the way.
“You really don’t know Tan Hean?”
“I don’t know him.”
“So what did you two talk about for so long while standing outside the shooting range?”
“What do you think we’re going to say?”
The more Bai Yan listened, the more strange it felt to her. Why did it seem as if Meng Hechuan was particularly repulsed by Tan Hean?
Is it that villains are born to target the protagonist?
Bai Yan was lost in thought when she suddenly felt a pain on her head.
Meng Hechuan tapped her head with his bent fingers and warned her lightly, “Tan Hean’s identity is quite special. You already have enough suspicions that have not been cleared. If you don’t want to cause yourself more trouble, it’s best not to get close to him.”
Bai Yan nodded in agreement, but in her heart she just thought he was talking nonsense.
You are the villain, so of course you don’t want to see the righteous protagonist being surrounded by people.
The two walked in silence for a while.
In just five minutes, Bai Yan saw smoke rising ahead.
“The dormitory building is next to it. The Aunt Zhang you mentioned should be there.”
Bai Yan thanked him, took two steps, and then turned back, “Do you want to go with me?”
She originally just wanted to prove in this way that she really had no other thoughts, but she didn’t think that this invitation-like statement was somewhat ambiguous.
The girl tilted her neck slightly, her eyes pure and innocent.
Meng Hechuan curled up his palm and pressed it against his philtrum. He coughed lightly to make his voice sound calm, “Okay.”
The guard in the dormitory duty room recognized Meng Hechuan and saluted him.
After learning their purpose, he took the initiative to lead the way, “Sister Zhang is indeed sick, she lives here.”
Bai Yan knocked twice on the green wooden door, and a faint rustling sound came from the room, “Who is it…”
“Aunt Zhang, it’s me, Bai Yan.”
Aunt Zhang put on her clothes and stood up. She was still coughing when she opened the door. “Xiao Yan? Didn’t you say you couldn’t leave the family building yet? Why are you here? Eh? Who is this…”
Meng Hechuan nodded slightly without further explanation.
Bai Yan shook the “comfort gifts” in her hand and pushed Aunt Zhang into the house. “It’s getting dark and windy outside. Let’s go in first.”
The layout of the dormitories of the Aviation University Squadron is similar, with four iron beds against the wall and a long wooden table in the middle.
“Aunt Zhang, are you feeling better now? If you hadn’t taken care of me during those few days, you wouldn’t have caught a cold.”
Meng Hechuan was standing at the door with his hands hanging down. He frowned slightly when he heard this, “When did you get sick?”
He brought the person back, so how come he didn’t know that he was sick?
Bai Yan sniffed and shrugged nonchalantly, “It happened a few days ago. Now, except for a little cough at night, it’s basically healed.”
During this period, she lived with Ruan Xiaohui, who did a lot of small things behind her back.
The most outrageous incident was when Ruan Xiaohui used up all the hot water in Bai Yan’s thermos while she was sleeping, causing Bai Yan to have to take cold showers for two days.
There were no heaters in bathrooms in the 1980s, so Bai Yan caught a cold while being soaked in water.
She knew Ruan Xiaohui was a scheming person, but she didn’t expect her to be so bad.
When Bai Yan felt feverish and was about to see Tai Nai, she did not report it to the guards, and just said to others that Bai Yan was sleepy.
Finally, it was Aunt Zhang who discovered something was wrong. She reached in to take a look while delivering the meal, and discovered that Bai Yan, wrapped in a quilt, was so hot that she could have been roasted as shrimp.
“Hey, girl, how can you say that?”
Although Aunt Zhang was ill, she felt sick when she thought of what Ruan Xiaohui had done. “The girl you live with is really mean. She didn’t even ask anyone to bring you medicine even though you had such a high fever.”
After saying that, Aunt Zhang glanced at Meng Hechuan and deliberately lowered her voice to ask, “By the way, Xiaoyan, why did you come to see me with Chief Engineer Meng from the brigade?”
Aunt Zhang had been going to Building 12 to deliver food some time ago, so naturally she had heard the rumors about Bai Yan and Meng Hechuan.
She asked once out of curiosity, and Ruan Xiaohui rushed to say that those were all rumors, and Bai Yan did not refute it.
Aunt Zhang felt it was quite a pity at the time.
Bai Yan didn’t want Meng Hechuan to misunderstand that she called him in to tell tales, nor did she want Aunt Zhang to misunderstand the relationship between them, so she quickly turned the page on the matter and changed the subject, “I’m fine. Aunt Zhang, you gave me all the medicine. Have you taken the medicine these days?”
She placed the net bag she brought on the table and said, “I happened to have the opportunity to go out today, so I brought you some medicine and food. You should take good care of yourself.”
Aunt Zhang has been living alone since her husband died.
There weren’t many girls in the team, and most of them were from the art troupe, with eyes that were as big as their heads.
Normally, he never pays attention to widows like Aunt Zhang.
Aunt Zhang was naturally happy that suddenly there was a young girl who could respond to her kindness.
She stuffed the things Bai Yan brought back into the net bag, “I’ve always been in good health. I’m not that squeamish after being sick for a few days! These milk powders and honey are all good things. Keep them for yourself.”
Bai Yan hummed and glanced at Meng Hechuan’s face with an awkward expression as he stretched out his hand.
These milk powder and honey were sent by him, and he was just borrowing flowers to offer to others without mentioning his contribution.
Fortunately, Meng Hechuan never cared about these false reputations. Instead, he helped out, “Since these are souvenirs brought back from visiting patients, there is no reason to take them back. You can leave them here.”
Bai Yan climbed up the pole, “Yes, yes, I’ll have more by then!”
Estimating that the time was almost up, Meng Hechuan used his eyes to remind Bai Yan to prepare to leave.
Before leaving, Aunt Zhang pulled Bai Yan aside and said, “So you are going to attend the exchange meeting tonight with Chief Engineer Meng? I heard that all the teachers from Jingzhou University are foreigners. Are you planning to go there in your clothes?”
Bai Yan gathered her large coat and said, “This is the warmest outfit.”
Besides, she couldn’t be the protagonist tonight, so who would pay attention to what she was wearing?
She didn’t think so, but Aunt Zhang disagreed. She smiled apologetically at Meng Hechuan, “Chief Engineer Meng, since we have a big event today, it’s not good for this girl to go with you in such a shabby state. I happen to have a few clothes from when she was young. Can I help her change into them?”
Meng Hechuan’s eyes unconsciously glanced at the short shirt on Bai Yan’s waist, then he turned out and waited without any opinion.
It was hard to refuse such a kind invitation, and Bai Yan didn’t want Aunt Zhang to misunderstand that she disliked her clothes, so she agreed.
Aunt Zhang rummaged through a camphorwood box and took out a red, waist-hugging, halter-neck V-neck dress.
Bai Yan blinked and lifted her skirt, smiling incredulously, “Aunt Zhang, do you still have clothes like this?”
“That’s it.” Aunt Zhang pulled up the curtains and urged Bai Yan to change her clothes. “This is the clothes your uncle asked someone to bring back for me from abroad after I married him. Unfortunately, he died later, and I never wore it once…”
Aunt Zhang didn’t intend to convey her sadness to Bai Yan, and smiled again, “I saw that Chief Engineer Meng didn’t wear a uniform today, but a suit instead. Your skirt goes well with his.”
When Meng Hechuan came to find Bai Yan, he found an opportunity on the way to change the work clothes he wore in the afternoon into a handmade suit.
When walking over from the shooting range just now, Bai Yan deliberately glanced at him several times. He had a cold temperament, and his face was solemn and tough when he was not speaking, exuding a mature and steady temperament.
No wonder such a person is called Master Meng.
“Aunt Zhang, don’t misunderstand me, he and I…”
Bai Yan opened her mouth to explain, but there was a knock on the door, and a faint voice sounded, “Bai Yan, hold on tight.”
She looked at her watch. It was already half past five. Time was indeed a bit tight.
Girls all love beauty, so Bai Yan didn’t hesitate any more. She thanked Aunt Zhang generously, took her clothes and went to the bathroom to change.
