Chapter 41
Meng Hechuan’s voice was a little hoarse.
He swallowed twice, not knowing why he suddenly felt a little irritated, and even lost patience when talking to Bai Yan. “Thank you very much, it’s fine now.”
Bai Yan blinked innocently and took two steps back.
After everything was cleaned up, Mrs. Meng’s son also took a look and brought An Qi over with him, so there was no excuse for him to stay any longer.
Meng Hechuan naturally had to send his parents to the gate, and Bai Yan finally found a chance to slip away.
She walked hesitantly towards the dormitory carrying a whole bucket of mung bean soup, her face full of worry.
These days, out of guilt, she had been cooking sweet soup for Meng Hechuan and Lu Jili who were punished to run laps.
With a big eater like Lu Jili around, she never cooked enough food to share every day, and most of it went into Lu Jili’s stomach.
Today I simply grabbed two more handfuls of mung beans and boiled a whole bucket of them, but I didn’t expect that no one would eat them.
She bought these two handfuls of mung beans with one dollar from her first pot of gold she earned on the train.
Adhering to the principle of not wasting anything, Bai Yan rolled her eyes and turned a corner.
Go straight to the small building where the training class is located.
Wei Wei and his team of teachers were specially invited by the Space Team to teach English training classes.
In order to facilitate their classes, the team allocated a two-story building for them.
The first floor is used as a classroom, and the second floor is used as a temporary dormitory for several foreign teachers.
After Wei Wei and his team reported in, Bai Yan followed them in the classroom on the first floor to screen candidates for interviews for the training class.
It was about four o’clock in the afternoon and everyone had taken a nap.
Before Bai Yan reached the front of the small building, she saw several figures walking down the stairs from the second floor. They were Wei Wei and others.
“Teacher Wei.” Bai Yan greeted politely: “I have some mung bean soup here. I wanted to send it over for you to try. Are you going out now?”
The people who are going to receive English training have not arrived yet these days, and the class leaders are still coordinating the training time for all the team members, so the teachers are generally free to move around in the afternoon.
Wei Wei waved at her excitedly, “Yan, you came at the right time.”
After a few days of getting along, several foreign teachers directly and affectionately called Bai Yan “A’Yan”.
It became easier to pronounce, so it became ‘Yan’.
“We were all saying a few days ago that there are so few people volunteering to sign up for English classes. Isn’t the biggest problem that the comrades in the team are not interested? The song you performed in the auditorium last time gave me inspiration. In fact, the young people in our team also like to get in touch with new things. In this case, I will try to create opportunities for them to experience new things.”
When Bai Yan walked in, she found that Wei Wei was holding a long roll of black film in his hand.
Her eyes lit up and she asked incredulously, “Teacher Wei, is this a film?”
Wei Wei didn’t expect that she even knew this, and gave her a compliment. “Yes, it’s an original English movie, The Sea Wolf, which was recently released in Country Y. If you have nothing to do later, do you want to watch it together?”
Bai Yan has been in the book for several days. Every night, she either reads or goes to bed early.
When I first heard that there would be extra entertainment activities, I naturally nodded in agreement.
She followed Wei Wei and his group to the playground and couldn’t help asking, “Teacher Wei, original film reels like this are very valuable now, right?”
No matter what era it is, original movie films should not be easy to get.
Bai Yan didn’t expect that Wei Wei, a teacher, would have such connections.
“I still have to thank Mr. Tan for this.”
“Tan… Tan Hean, Chief Engineer Tan?” Bai Yan was surprised. “Did he send this film?”
Wei Wei nodded. “Not only the film, but also the projectionist and the screen were prepared by him. He also personally coordinated with the team leaders to obtain the permission to play the original movie on the playground.”
In the 1980s, watching movies was still a luxurious pastime, let alone purchasing the copyright of the original film and playing a movie?
It would cost a lot of money to show a movie like this, right?
Bai Yan clicked her tongue, “He does so many things, does he get paid?”
“No!” Wei Wei held up the film with his hand. “Mr. Tan is a man of high moral character. He hopes that more and more young people will join the craze of learning English, learn English, and see more of the world.”
Wei Wei couldn’t hide his praise in his tone, “Mr. Tan said that these expenses are just a small amount of money. If we can train talents who know English for the brigade, this is the most important thing.”
Since it was prepared by Tan Hean, Bai Yan had a clear idea in her mind.
After all, he is the male protagonist in the original book. He is rich and carefree, which are the standard features of a domineering CEO.
But after all, she benefited from him. When Bai Yan thought about going to the movies soon, she silently thanked the boss for his generosity.
By the time she followed Wei Wei and his group to the playground, it had already gotten dark.
There is a huge curtain placed in the center of the playground, which is very conspicuous.
There was a projectionist setting up a large machine on the lawn. Bai Yan guessed that it should be a movie player.
They sent the film over to the young team members who had already received the news and were waiting for the film to be shown.
Each of their faces was filled with anticipation.
The brigade also played movies on weekdays, but most of them were red movies or old anti-Japanese war movies that were played repeatedly.
Everyone can almost recite the plot.
Today we suddenly heard that there would be a foreign spy film, so naturally the seats were full.
Since Bai Yan was following Wei Wei and his group, she was naturally able to sit in the front row.
When she walked around, she happened to meet the sight of the small group of the art troupe headed by Xu Qingqing.
Looking more closely, she saw that the person standing at the end of the small group was actually her good roommate, Ruan Xiaohui.
Bai Yan glanced at the several water bottles hanging on her body, and she understood something in her mind.
No wonder Ruan Xiaohui had been missing for several days, it turned out that she was trying to curry favor with the squad leader.
But it is obvious that the small team headed by Xu Qingqing just wants free labor.
There was no real desire to accept her.
Seeing Bai Yan’s indifferent gaze, Ruan Xiaohui also showed an embarrassed expression on her face.
She didn’t want Bai Yan to see her trying to curry favor with others, so she lowered her eyes, but there was uncontrollable jealousy and hatred in them.
Obviously, she and Bai Yan joined the team at the same time, and she even took on the title of having a “shoulder badge” connection with Meng Hechuan.
But why was Bai Yan able to work as a translator in a proper manner, spend the whole day with those foreigners, and be addressed as “Teacher Bai”?
I was assigned to the kitchen team, where I either cut garlic or washed dishes every day.
She followed Meng Hechuan to the team because she was attracted by his identity as a soldier.
I also wanted to try to see if I could stick with him, marry an officer, and become successful from then on.
Instead of doing the rough work that he had to do in the countryside, he had to go to the canteen every day to serve meals to the soldiers.
