The Next Day.
Due to her biological clock, Jian Xiu woke up early in the morning.
After crossing over to this world, last night was the first time she had slept so soundly.
Looking at the children, they were still fast asleep.
She quietly got out of bed and went outside to continue her work.
If nothing unexpected happened, the wheelchair should be completed today.
What Jian Xiu didn’t know was that as soon as she stepped outside, Zhang Zixuan opened his eyes.
In fact, he hadn’t slept all night.
He kept thinking—why had Jian Xiu changed so much?
No matter how much someone experiences, it’s impossible for their personality to change overnight.
Not only that, but the current Jian Xiu, despite looking the same, was a completely different person in terms of personality.
Even Zhang Zixuan himself couldn’t figure out what had triggered such a transformation.
Just as he was deep in thought, he heard the sound of woodworking tools in the yard again.
Listening carefully, he could tell she was working on the wheels.
From what she said yesterday, he had already guessed that the most challenging part of making a wheelchair was the wheels.
This was also what puzzled him the most—Jian Xiu used to know nothing about these things.
And yet now?
Not only was she independent, but she could also handle tasks she never even touched before.
But when Zhang Zixuan turned to look at the three children still sleeping on the bed, he suddenly let it go.
No matter how she changed, as long as she was still his wife and still the mother of his children, then nothing else mattered.
As long as she stayed by his side, he should be content.
Jian Xiu, unaware of his thoughts, was now squatting in front of the wheelchair, her eyes filled with pride.
She never expected to have such a talent for this kind of work.
Looking up at the sky, she figured it was time to make breakfast. Today, she also planned to venture into the deep mountains.
When she walked back into the house, she noticed Zhang Zixuan was already awake.
“Since you’re up, come out and try the wheelchair!”
“It’s finished?”
“Yes, come on, I’ll help you out!”
For the past two years, Zhang Zixuan had never had a full meal.
His entire body was as thin as a bamboo pole.
At this point, even the former Jian Xiu could probably lift him effortlessly.
It wasn’t until he sat in the wheelchair that Zhang Zixuan finally felt like there was a glimmer of light in his life.
How long had it been since he could freely look at the outside world like this?
So long that he had almost believed he would never have the chance again.
“How is it? Satisfied?” Jian Xiu asked smugly.
Judging from Zhang Zixuan’s expression, she could tell he was beyond excited.
“Very satisfied.”
As he spoke, Zhang Zixuan tentatively pushed the wheelchair forward.
Sure enough, with just a little effort, the wheelchair moved smoothly.
Seeing this, Zhang Zixuan became even more emotional.
“It really moves! It works! Xiu’er, the wheelchair actually works!”
Jian Xiu, just as excited, nodded in response.
She stood by his side, smiling as she watched Zhang Zixuan’s joy.
“With this wheelchair, I can help with the chores. Didn’t you say you were going to gather plantain herbs? After you collect them, I can wash and dry them at home,” Zhang Zixuan said.
Hearing this, Jian Xiu frowned slightly.
“Washing and drying are fine, but getting water is inconvenient. I want to install a pipe to bring water directly into the yard so we won’t have to walk all the way to the back to fetch it.”
After all, plantain herbs grew everywhere in the mountains. If they washed them at the village river, the entire village would find out.
If that happened, how could their small, struggling family compete with the villagers?
The best solution was to collect the herbs in the afternoon, bring them home, and wash and dry them in secret.
This way, they could avoid unwanted attention.
“A pipe? How far is it from here to the backyard?” Zhang Zixuan asked.
“It’s not too far, but not too close either. Want me to push you over to take a look? You can test the wheelchair on the way.”
“Sure! No need to push me, I can go myself!” Zhang Zixuan said with a grin.
As he spoke, he wheeled himself outside.
For two years, this was the first time Jian Xiu had seen him smile.
She had to admit, he looked really good when he smiled.
At this moment, Jian Xiu couldn’t help but wonder—who exactly was he?
Was he abandoned by his family?
Or was he switched at birth?
If it was the former, then his original family must have been poor.
If it was the latter, then he must have been born into a wealthy household.
Only the rich would do something like that.
Considering Zhang Zixuan’s refined appearance and mannerisms, Jian Xiu leaned more toward the latter.
Some things were just innate.
Even though he had grown up in a rural village, certain traits were deeply embedded in his bones.
Even now, sitting in a wheelchair, he didn’t look the least bit pitiful.
When they arrived at the backyard, Zhang Zixuan immediately had an idea.
“The distance isn’t too far. Walking requires a detour, but if we set up a pipe straight through here, it’ll be much closer.”
As he spoke, he pointed behind their thatched house.
“You mean…”
“Yes, do you see those bamboo stalks? Cut a few, and I’ll take care of it.”
Hearing this, Jian Xiu suddenly realized something.
Of course! Why hadn’t she thought of using bamboo?
“Wait here! I’ll go cut some right now!”
Without hesitation, she rushed toward the bamboo grove.
But as soon as she arrived and saw the large patches of bamboo shoots, she was stunned.
She quickly chopped a few bamboo stalks and dug up some bamboo shoots before running back to Zhang Zixuan.
“This is bamboo shoot! Wow, this is a treasure!”
“Bamboo shoot?”
“Yes! You guys don’t eat this?” Jian Xiu asked in disbelief.
“This can be eaten?”
“Of course! Stir-fry it with meat, and it’s absolutely delicious!” Jian Xiu said proudly.
Zhang Zixuan didn’t respond.
He simply stared at her in a daze.
Noticing his gaze, Jian Xiu asked, “What’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I’m sorry… I made you and the children suffer.”
Jian Xiu froze for a moment before realizing why he said that.
