The whole room fell into silence.
What Shuxin had just said was too shocking. If it were true, it might mean the world was about to change.
Shuxin had exchanged everything she knew from books for what she had seen in her dreams. The idea of穿书 (crossing into a book) was too bizarre. She thought that anyone would find it hard to accept that the real world they lived in had been written by someone else. Even more unbearable was the thought that from the moment she was born, her fate had already been planned.
“Do you think it’s absurd? I didn’t want to believe it at first either. But when I followed the method from my dream and successfully opened the space, I had no choice but to believe it.”
Shuxin waved her hand in front of Yanmou, sending the water cup on the table into the space.
The cup disappearing into thin air, a phenomenon that couldn’t be explained by science, kept shaking Yanmou’s understanding of the past twenty years.
With his strong sense of reason, Yanmou quickly accepted the fact that the world was about to end and his brain quickly calmed down.
“When exactly did the apocalypse begin in your dream?” he asked, organizing his thoughts.
“I didn’t dream of the exact date, but I know it started around the end of June or the beginning of July, when the first rain started.”
“So that means there’s still at most six months to prepare. That’s enough time. What things have you already collected? How much more can your space hold?”
In a short amount of time, Yanmou had already formed several plans in his mind.
“I have a list of things to collect. I’ll go get it for you later. I’ve used up about half of the first layer of the space, so there’s still a lot of room. If there are too many things, we can move items that don’t need refrigeration to the second layer.”
Sensing Yanmou’s slightly confused gaze, Shuxin suddenly realized she hadn’t explained to him what her space was like.
“My space has three layers. The first layer is about the size of ten football fields and there is no time flow. The second layer can hold living creatures. I’ve already raised some pigs, ducks, cows, sheep, rabbits, etc., and planted many fruit trees. The only downside is that I can’t plant vegetables or grains. The third layer can’t store anything, but it contains a high-tech safety base for the apocalypse.”
Shuxin thought things through carefully. If she were to follow Yanmou in the future, mutual trust would be key. Hiding things could create distance between them, and that would be counterproductive.
Also, to activate the third layer of the space’s safety base, a large number of zombie crystal cores were needed, which meant she couldn’t do it without Yanmou’s help.
“Apocalypse high-tech safety base? What are the conditions to activate it?” Yanmou raised an eyebrow, clearly interested in the safety base.
“I didn’t even say it, and you already figured out that it requires certain conditions to open? You’re too smart, my boyfriend. I can really feel the differences in this world.”
Shuxin leaned playfully into Yanmou’s arms. He smoothly pulled her into his embrace, clearly used to her actions by now.
After spending several months with Shuxin, Yanmou had gotten accustomed to her frequent displays of affection.
Especially when she acted all cute and asked for kisses and hugs, he enjoyed it immensely and felt a deep sense of reliance and trust from her.
“The condition to activate the safety base is the energy from zombie crystal cores, and it takes a lot of them. But it’s not just consuming them without return. The base also has a defense shield, a complete defense system, and a living system that can help us avoid many troubles.”
“Sounds good. After zombies appear, there will definitely be many different safety bases, and it’s inevitable that there will be mixed forces in the bases. Sometimes, even the leaders of the bases will have to weigh the pros and cons. At that time, if you have a safety base completely under your control, I’ll feel much more at ease.”
Yanmou tightened his embrace and kissed the top of Shuxin’s head gently.
“I plan to travel around the country during the holidays, collect supplies for the space, and also gather some local specialties and snacks. Do you want to come with me?”
Shuxin leaned against Yanmou’s chest, wrapping her arms around his slim but strong waist as she spoke about her plans.
“Mm, I’ll go with you. Give me the list of supplies you made later, and I’ll see if there’s anything missing. I’ll prepare an extra set of things, and then you can store them in the space too.”
“Why do you need to prepare an extra set of supplies? Are you trying to keep things clear between us? Don’t you think I’m ‘one of your own’?!”
Shuxin quickly wriggled out of Yanmou’s arms, pouting in mock anger.
“Silly girl, always thinking nonsense. There won’t only be the two of us in the future. When we have other teammates, I’ll give them the supplies I prepared, and the ones you prepare will be for me. You’re my woman.”
Yanmou helplessly yet lovingly rubbed Shuxin’s head and pulled her back into his arms.
“Hehe, I knew my boyfriend was the best! Love you, boyfriend!”
Shuxin showered him with sweet words, which Yanmou had heard many times before. He knew she was just trying to sweet-talk him, but every time he couldn’t help but feel soft-hearted.
All the principles and boundaries he had held firm in his life melted when it came to Shuxin. He could never resist her when she acted cute.
Well, what could he do? She was his girlfriend, after all. He could only spoil her.
Yanmou’s efficiency was high. That very evening, he reorganized a new list based on the one Shuxin gave him, and made plans for the places they would visit during the holidays.
He even made arrangements for the weapons Shuxin had been unable to buy earlier.
Shuxin had never asked about Yanmou’s family, and the book hadn’t provided specific details about his background. It was only last night that she learned a rough idea from Yanmou himself.
As it turned out, Yanmou’s family had been involved in the underworld for several generations. It was only during his grandfather’s time that the family slowly began to clean up its image. But the way they educated their descendants was harsh, bordering on the brutal, like raising a poisonous insect.
Yanmou belonged to the main branch of the family and had received much stricter training than the side branches or outsiders. He was expected to be the best at everything he did.
He had also grown up in a world full of intrigue, deceit, and constant danger, with the family turning a blind eye to their internal power struggles and even encouraging them.
For Yanmou to have survived and grown strong in such a family and now hold his own in society, his intelligence, methods, and foresight were all top-notch.
After learning about Yanmou’s family background, Shuxin saw him in a new light. She realized that the character he showed her was probably just a facade he wore in front of others.
He might not have been as perfect as she initially imagined, but now, she no longer cared.
What mattered to her now was Yanmou as a person.
Shuxin couldn’t imagine the unknown childhood Yanmou had gone through. The past was something she could not change, but what she could change was the present and future.
