That day, after getting the five cubs, Shuxin was so happy that her smile didn’t fade on the way back. At night, through Yan Mo’s words, she explained to the other two why she wanted to raise animal cubs.
She didn’t know how Yan Mo had conveyed it to them, but the two of them never asked, and instead, they all seriously took care of the five cubs together.
The five cubs were all just born not long ago. Shuxin hadn’t paid much attention at first, but upon closer inspection, she realized that although they were all covered in white fur, they were different species: three snow wolf cubs and two white tiger cubs.
It made sense that the pit had contained a mother tiger and a mother wolf’s corpses. It wasn’t too surprising.
Unfortunately, despite their careful care and nurturing, not all of the cubs survived. The third day, the weakest of the snow wolf cubs passed away. Shuxin was heartbroken for several days because of it.
The remaining four cubs were in better health and could leave the space. The four of them held a small meeting and decided that each person would take care of one cub.
There was a high probability that the animals would mutate, nearly eighty-five percent, and these four cubs were likely to become partners fighting alongside them in the future. It was best to cultivate bonds and understanding from a young age.
In the end, Shuxin got the “big cat” she had longed for, a little white tiger (female). Yan Mo took a little snow wolf (male). Bo Xiangwen liked a little white tiger (male), and Mu Qimai cherished his little snow wolf (male).
The four cubs were still at the milk-drinking stage. Every day, Shuxin would take fresh milk from the cow she raised in the second layer of the space and store it in the kitchen, then find four different-colored bottles, one for each of them to feed.
When training, they would put the cubs together and let them play. Among the four, it turned out that Mu Qimai and his little snow wolf were the closest, almost inseparable except when they were training, bathing, or going out.
Whenever Shuxin spent too much time with her little white tiger, she would feel jealous and complain to Yan Mo. She would say things like, “I’m not even as important as a little white tiger,” or, “You want me to spend the cold nights alone…”
And every time, Yan Mo, with his stunningly handsome face, would speak in a disappointed, hurt tone, which made Shuxin feel like a “heartless” and “unfaithful” woman. Unable to resist, she would give up her “new love” and accompany her “old love.”
Because of the encounter with the group at the armory, Shuxin and the others didn’t go to other armories in the area. Instead, they focused on raising the cubs, training, and improving themselves.
Mu Qimai often interacted with people from the military and was familiar with special forces.
Although the group was in plain clothes, their body language and small details showed that they had received formal military training. Given the size of the group, it was easy to conclude that they were from a special task force.
Since a special team had been sent to take over the armory, and one of the armories had been emptied, they were sure to immediately check the other armories and guard them strictly, so Shuxin and the others would have no opportunity to act.
They might have even set up traps in advance, waiting for them to act again, to capture them all at once.
They weren’t foolish enough to directly confront the military just for some small armories’ firearms. That would be like committing suicide.
They were right. After Xiao Lou and the others returned, they immediately contacted their superiors through special channels and sent people to empty the remaining armories within a day. They intentionally left one untouched, hoping to lure Shuxin and the others into acting again. But after a week of waiting with no action, they gave up.
Days passed. If it weren’t for the abnormal temperatures outside, Shuxin might have thought the apocalypse hadn’t arrived.
The four little ones were growing, and in just under two months, they were no longer the small, fragile creatures they had been when Shuxin first brought them home.
The four cubs were full of energy, causing havoc around the house and destroying several things. Shuxin and the others didn’t spoil them, and when they turned three months old, they planned to start training them.
Recently, they had started removing the space heaters in the living room and gradually letting the cubs adapt to the outdoor temperature.
It was another weekend, and Yan Mo woke up early to prepare the lamb Shuxin had taken from the space. The night before, Shuxin had been watching a drama and saw a scene where people were having a roast whole lamb feast. Having not had roast lamb for a long time, Shuxin was drooling with hunger, even dreaming about it.
Unable to resist, Yan Mo got up early to marinate the lamb in preparation for dinner.
Shuxin had provided a live sheep raised on the second floor of the space, which was a decent size. As Yan Mo dragged the sheep down, Mu Qimai and Bo Xiangwen happened to be coming out, and they helped hold down the struggling sheep to successfully slaughter it.
Roasting the whole lamb was a tedious process, but the aroma was incredibly tempting. The lamb on the grill crackled as it roasted over the charcoal, and the hot oil slowly slid down the meat’s surface, filling the entire living room with a mouthwatering fragrance.
The four little cubs, attracted by the smell, sat next to the roast lamb with Shuxin, staring at it with wide eyes.
The older cub could control its saliva, but the four younger ones were drooling uncontrollably, making Yan Mo laugh and shake his head. Bo Xiangwen, who was coming over with water, couldn’t help but burst into laughter when he saw it.
Shuxin, embarrassed and angry, shot him a glare and ran off to prepare the rest of the meal. If she kept watching, she would really start drooling.
All the waiting and patience paid off the moment the roasted lamb hit her mouth. It was hot and flavorful, and she felt pure happiness.
The lamb, charred over the fire, was already aromatic, but with the addition of pepper salt and spicy sauce, it became even more flavorful—tender, crispy, salty, and spicy, all dancing in her mouth, with the delicious meat flavor lingering on her tongue.
The lamb’s color was rich and red, fragrant, oily but not greasy, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the taste was unique.
Eating only roasted lamb could get a bit overwhelming, so Shuxin had prepared several light and refreshing side dishes, along with thin pancakes and a special dipping sauce to wrap the lamb in. They all drank a little wine, and everyone’s appetite opened up.
They didn’t talk much at first, too focused on enjoying their food. After satisfying their hunger, they chatted while eating, and the meal lasted for three hours before finally finishing.
The four little cubs didn’t miss out either. They were already able to eat some meat to supplement their nutrition. Shuxin had saved a tender part of the lamb for them, without any seasoning, and divided it into four portions to feed them. They ate it eagerly, their mouths full of meat.
