Chapter 23: “What You Hear is False, What You See is True”:
Hua’an Hospital
When the driver parked the car in front of the hospital, Gu Nanyan hesitated for a minute before getting out.
Lu Wan was staying at no other hospital but the Gu family hospital.
Now, her older brother, Gu Nancheng, was the hospital’s director.
Inside… there were also many relatives from the Gu family.
If she showed up at the hospital, the Gu family would definitely find out.
But it didn’t matter. She had already fallen out with her family.
She had blocked everyone from the Gu family, and in the four years since, no one had contacted her.
She had chilled everyone’s heart.
Her nose suddenly felt a little sour, and Gu Nanyan sniffed before walking into the hospital.
Just as she entered, a black sedan stopped in front of the hospital.
Qin Yuwei looked up at the “Hua’an Hospital” sign, her eyes flashing with doubt.
What was Gu Nanyan doing here?
Was she sick?
But she didn’t look sick.
Could it be that she came to see the Gu family?
No matter what, it didn’t matter anymore.
What Qin Yuwei needed was to make sure Shen Boyan knew that she had seen someone she shouldn’t have.
A malicious smile flashed in Qin Yuwei’s eyes as she immediately took out her phone, sent the location to He Yunrui, and then typed a message.
After sending the message, she told the driver to turn around and leave.
VIP Patient Room for Lu Wan
No one from the Lu family stayed to take care of her, so they had hired a nurse for her.
“I’m Wanwan’s friend.”
Gu Nanyan knocked on the door to the room and politely addressed the nurse.
“Oh, alright, please come in,” the nurse responded, surprised that someone was visiting Miss Lu.
She thought Miss Lu didn’t have any friends.
“Miss Lu, your friend has come to see you. I’ll step out. Call me if you need anything.”
Lu Wan was wearing a hospital gown and was sitting propped up at the head of the bed, her expression numb as she stared out of the window.
The nurse greeted her and then left the room.
Gu Nanyan walked up to the bed and followed Lu Wan’s gaze out the window. Under the bright sunlight, a few birds were flying in the sky.
Sighing inwardly, Gu Nanyan spoke up: “Wanwan, do you still remember me?”
The person on the bed finally moved.
Lu Wan slowly turned her gaze back, her thin face as pale as paper.
Although she looked sickly, her features were still very beautiful.
An oval face, large eyes, a high nose bridge, and small cherry lips.
She had the delicate beauty of a sickly, vintage-style beauty.
“Nanyan?” Lu Wan stared at Gu Nanyan for a few seconds, still somewhat unable to believe it. “Is it really you?”
“Yes, it’s me.” Gu Nanyan sat down in front of the bed and lowered her head, sincerely apologizing. “I was wrong before. I shouldn’t have blocked you. Wanwan, can you forgive me?”
Lu Wan didn’t speak. Her pale hands reached out and grabbed Gu Nanyan’s hand. “Nanyan, I’ve never blamed you. In fact, I envy you for having the courage to pursue true love, no matter the cost.”
“Ugh, don’t mention it,” Gu Nanyan pulled her hand back from Lu Wan’s grasp, regretfully saying, “That He Yunrui is scum. From start to finish, he was just lying to me. He got close to me only because my family is rich. All the kindness he showed me was just an act. I only regret that I didn’t see through him sooner. I caused a rift with my entire family and pushed away a good man like Shen Boyan because of such a scumbag. I was really stupid.”
“What?”
Lu Wan widened her eyes in disbelief and stared at Gu Nanyan. “He Yunrui wasn’t good to you? How could…”
“It was all fake,” Gu Nanyan said angrily, not wanting to talk about him any longer. “I’ve cut ties with him. Now I just want to live a good life with Shen Boyan and raise our child well.”
“But… didn’t you say you didn’t like Shen Boyan? You said he was cold, aloof, and clueless when it came to romance… He wasn’t your type at all.”
Lu Wan looked at her curiously, unable to believe that Gu Nanyan had accepted a man she didn’t like.
“Wanwan, the reason I used to think that way about Shen Boyan was because I didn’t understand him. After getting to know him better, I realized that he’s not as cold-blooded as people say. He’s actually a very competent father and has a gentle and friendly side to him. After all this, I’ve learned an important lesson: rumors are never reliable. What you hear is false, but what you see is the truth.”
Listening to Gu Nanyan, Lu Wan’s expression grew somewhat complicated.
She glanced at her wrist, which was wrapped in bandages, and lowered her gaze. “Nanyan, you must have heard about the family wanting to marry me off to Ho Beiting.”
“Of course I know. You even tried to end your life to resist your family’s decision. How could I not know?” Gu Nanyan looked at Lu Wan’s downcast expression and tried to comfort her. “Wanwan, you’re too silly. What could be more important than your own life? If you’re willing to give up your life, then what are you afraid of with Ho Beiting?”
“I…” Two lines of clear tears immediately fell from Lu Wan’s eyes, and she choked on her words. “I just don’t want my fate to be controlled and trampled on like this.”
It was one thing for them to bully her on a daily basis, but why didn’t they even allow her to make such an important decision in her life?
Why did they want her to marry that terrifying Ho Beiting, the so-called “killing god?”
“They?” Gu Nanyan already knew that Lu Wan’s stepmother had never treated her well.
It seemed that this stepmother had orchestrated the marriage with Ho Beiting.
“If you’re unwilling, you can fight back against them, but never sacrifice yourself. Your life is yours. If you really die, it’ll only bring pain to your loved ones and joy to your enemies. They might even be hoping for your death. Do you think that’s worth it?”
Gu Nanyan hit the nail on the head, and after a moment of silence, Lu Wan wiped her tears gently. “It’s not worth it.”
They were definitely hoping for her death.
Her existence was a stain on her father’s name and proof that her stepmother was not accepted by the Lu family.
“You know it’s not worth it, so cherish your life. Only by living can there be hope.”
Gu Nanyan spoke earnestly, and Lu Wan seemed genuinely moved. She wiped the tears from her face and her eyes showed a hint of determination. “Nanyan, I understand. I will live well.”
“Good.” Gu Nanyan affectionately patted Lu Wan’s head.
Her smooth black hair felt wonderful to the touch.
Lu Wan shyly smiled at her.
At that moment, the door was suddenly knocked.
With the nurse gone, Gu Nanyan ran to open the door.
But as soon as she opened it, she froze.
A tall figure stood at the door. Gu Nancheng, wearing a white coat, exuded an ethereal aura.
With his hands casually in his pockets and a refined look on his face, he wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses. Through them, his indifferent gaze fell on Gu Nanyan, no longer soft or gentle as it once was.
“Brother…” Gu Nanyan was stunned.
But Gu Nancheng didn’t acknowledge her. He walked past her and went straight to Lu Wan’s bedside to ask about her condition.
Lu Wan said she was feeling better.
Her gaze subconsciously turned to Gu Nanyan.
Has Nanyan still not made up with the family?
“If there are no issues, we’ll arrange for your discharge tomorrow,” Gu Nancheng said in his pleasant voice, different from Shen Boyan’s deep, magnetic tone. His voice had more warmth, like the sound of wind in the trees, clear and melodic.
