Chapter 58: An Unsettled Night

“Mom.” Upon returning home, Bai An looked at Wan Qing, who had not yet taken off her clothes, and her eyes turned red with concern.

Wan Qing remained silent for a long time, but after hearing Bai An’s call, she immediately stood up and walked toward her room, saying, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”

It was unclear whether she was comforting Bai An or herself in her current emotional state.

Bai An stared at the closed door of Wan Qing’s room after she entered, unsure of what to do next, feeling helpless as she looked at her father beside her.

Lu Demin sat in a chair, thinking that he shouldn’t have listened to the village chief’s muddled words and should have directly confronted those troublemakers behind him, so he wouldn’t have to feel this pain seeing Wan Qing like this now.

Just as they sat in the room in silence, a clattering noise suddenly erupted from the yard.

Lu Demin, already feeling a fire of anger inside him, became even more enraged upon hearing the noise from the yard. He abruptly stood up and walked outside.

When he opened the door, a dark figure rushed past him. Upon closer inspection, it was the little dog that Bai An and the others had found today. The dog seemed frightened and quickly ran inside, hiding under the table.

Seeing this, Lu Demin sighed. Just as he was about to close the door, a stone the size of a palm was hurled at his forehead.

Lu Jin’an reacted quickly, pulling Lu Demin to safety.

“What happened?”

Bai An, surprised, leaned closer to see what was going on in the yard, but Lu Jin’an stopped her, shaking his head, and closed the door, leaving a small gap for the others to look out safely.

Peering through the gap, they saw that the yard was filled with scattered stones, and from outside, more stones occasionally fell from above.

“Why is this happening?” Bai An furrowed her brows in worry and asked, “Why are stones falling from the sky?”

“Why wouldn’t they?” Lu Jin’an replied coldly, watching the stones continuously fall into the yard. “Someone is throwing them from outside.”

Lu Demin also frowned, scanning the room.

Lu Jin’an then opened the door and stepped outside, quickly picking up a stone from the ground and throwing it back out before another stone could fall.

Sure enough, there were shouts of surprise, but soon after, more stones were thrown in from outside the yard.

Bai An, feeling anxious, pushed against the table and ran outside, ignoring Lu Demin’s concerns behind her.

“Brother, come inside!” Bai An moved the table aside, and Lu Jin’an hurriedly ducked in, wrapping his arms around Bai An and saying, “Do you want to come out with me to take a look?”

Bai An looked up at the stones falling from the sky with worry. Seeing the concern in her eyes, Lu Jin’an comforted her, “You just hide behind the door for now. I’ll go warn those troublemakers.”

Lu Jin’an’s words made Bai An feel a bit more at ease. She tugged at the hem of his shirt and said, “Just be careful out there.”

With that, Bai An moved behind the door under Lu Jin’an’s protection. He found a safe spot for her to hide and even picked up several stones from the ground to keep in his clothes.

Not far away, Lu Demin had reached Wan Qing’s side. Seeing that Bai An was in a safe place, he breathed a sigh of relief and called out to Lu Jin’an, “Be careful.”

Lu Jin’an gestured reassuringly to them and opened the yard door.

As the curious onlookers outside approached the yard door, Lu Jin’an took advantage of their distraction, using the door as a shield, and hurled stones at the group outside.
