Chapter 64: So Sleepy
Seeing that everyone was settled, Bai An noticed that the five of them were sitting face to face with a small table in between. Curiously looking around, she asked, “How long will we be on this train?”
Lu Jin’an looked at the ticket in his hand and replied, “It’ll be quite a while; we’re heading south.”
Cui Ju, who was nearby, also asked curiously, “Heading south? Will the place we’re going to be completely different from our village?”
“How exciting!”
Wan Qing, seeing Cui Ju’s curious expression, smiled gently and then took out a few thicker pieces of clothing from the package at her feet, handing them to the children.
“You haven’t slept much all night; cover up with these and take a nap.”
Bai An took the clothes from her mother, gave one to Cui Ju, another to Lu Jin’an, and kept the last one for herself.
After Bai An covered herself with the clothes, she noticed her parents weren’t making any move to sleep and couldn’t help but ask, “Mom, Dad, aren’t you going to sleep?”
Lu Demin chuckled, “Not tired yet; you all go ahead and sleep.”
“Okay.” Bai An was starting to feel sleepy too. She glanced at Cui Ju on her left, who had already covered her face with the clothes and leaned against the window to sleep.
Looking to her right, she saw Lu Jin’an was still awake.
Bai An smiled contentedly, covered herself with the clothes, and leaned her head on Lu Jin’an’s shoulder, looking up and asking, “Can I sleep here?”
Lu Jin’an lifted his hand, adjusting Bai An’s head to make it more comfortable, and gently patted her head, saying, “Go to sleep.”
Seeing Bai An close her eyes, Lu Jin’an felt no sleepiness at all and simply turned to look out the window at the scenery.
“Lu Jin’an, aren’t you going to sleep?” Wan Qing noticed Lu Jin’an staring out the window in a daze and asked, “You haven’t slept all night; aren’t you going to rest a bit now?”
“Not tired. Mom, if you and Dad are tired, you can sleep first; I’ll keep an eye on the bags here,” Lu Jin’an replied.
Wan Qing nodded and, seeing Lu Jin’an truly wasn’t sleepy, said, “Then your dad and I will take a nap. If we get tired, we’ll wake you up.”
Lu Jin’an nodded.
Only then did Wan Qing tell Lu Demin, “Let’s sleep.”
The scenery outside changed rapidly, and Lu Jin’an watched the ever-changing views, his eyes filled with a murky depth.
Not knowing how long she had slept, Bai An felt a bit groggy and couldn’t quite tell where she was sleeping at the moment.
Seeing her wake up, Lu Jin’an smiled and said, “You’re awake.”
Bai An opened her eyes wide, looking at Lu Jin’an’s face above her, and couldn’t help but feel that from this angle, he still looked handsome, which wasn’t easy at all.
Suddenly coming to her senses, Bai An climbed out of Lu Jin’an’s arms. At her age, being so close to him made her feel a bit shy.
“How did I end up sleeping in your arms?” Bai An said, feeling embarrassed.
Lu Jin’an smiled and watched as Bai An placed her finger over her lips, signaling her to be quiet since others were still sleeping.
Bai An noticed that Cui Ju and her parents were still asleep, nodded, and quietly sat next to Lu Jin’an.
Her mind was still a bit unclear, and she couldn’t help but yawn.
“Still sleepy?” Lu Jin’an leaned closer to Bai An’s ear and asked softly.
The warm breath made Bai An feel a bit uneasy. She shifted her body a little further away from Lu Jin’an and said, “Not sleepy anymore; I just wanted to yawn.”
Lu Jin’an observed all of Bai An’s little movements with amusement, realizing that the little girl had grown up and was now able to maintain some distance from her brother.
Inside, Lu Jin’an felt a mix of emotions he couldn’t quite describe. He raised his hand and tousled Bai An’s slightly messy hair even more to vent his feelings that he couldn’t express.
“What are you doing?” Bai An complained softly, reaching out to push Lu Jin’an’s hand away.
Lu Jin’an wasn’t annoyed. Looking at Bai An’s messy appearance, he smirked and smiled slightly.
Bai An tidied her hair and sat idly on the chair. Feeling a bit bored, she took out her small bag.
Seeing Bai An’s eager expression, Lu Jin’an leaned over and asked softly, “What are you up to now?”
“I’m hungry and want to eat something.”
Lu Jin’an nodded, pulled a book out of his backpack, and started reading it seriously.
Bai An turned to look and saw the cover had the words “Physics” on it. She couldn’t help but give him a thumbs-up, thinking someone like him should always have a book on hand.
Bai An then started taking out various snacks from her backpack. If there were any packages, she’d reach into the backpack with both hands and tear off the packaging in her space.
Yes, Bai An was quite skilled at this without anyone noticing, not even Lu Jin’an beside her.
The small table gradually filled up with food, and it wasn’t until a bag of seeds fell at Lu Jin’an’s feet that he noticed the table was already piled with quite a bit of stuff.
“Did you take all this out of your bag?” Lu Jin’an picked up the seeds and asked suspiciously.
Bai An nodded, “If you want to eat, go ahead. I have plenty more.”
Looking at the pile of food on the table, Lu Jin’an bent down to peek into Bai An’s bag.
Seeing Lu Jin’an eyeing her bag, Bai An quickly hugged it to her chest, “You can’t eat what’s inside until later; I don’t have enough for myself already.”
Cui Ju, who was nearby, was stirred awake by Bai An’s voice. She stretched and yawned sleepily, looking at Bai An and asking, “What’s up?”
“Nothing.” Since Cui Ju was awake, Bai An stopped teasing Lu Jin’an and pointed to the food on the table, saying, “Are you hungry? You can eat if you are.”
Seeing the diverse array and large quantity of food, Cui Ju was surprised. It felt like they were on a trip rather than fleeing.
“Should we wake Auntie and the others to eat together?” Cui Ju asked.
Bai An thought for a moment and decided it would be more fun to eat together.
“Mom, Mom.” Bai An patted Wan Qing’s shoulder and then patted Lu Demin’s shoulder, “Dad.”
Wan Qing and Lu Demin, slightly drowsy, asked, “What’s the matter?”
“Nothing, just calling you to eat.”
When Wan Qing and Lu Demin saw the food on the table, they were a bit surprised and asked, “Where did all this come from?”
Bai An patted her little bag and said, “I brought it from home, and I still have a bit more for later.”
“Great!” Cui Ju clapped her hands and picked up a mung bean cake to eat, saying, “It’s really delicious.”
Bai An smiled at her happy expression. She took out a handkerchief from her pocket to wipe off the crumbs around Cui Ju’s mouth, saying, “Eat slowly; there’s plenty more.”
Cui Ju swallowed the food in her mouth and said, “Thank you, Bai An.”
Seeing the two sisters getting along so well, Lu Jin’an helplessly took a sip from his water bottle.
