Transmigrating to the 1970s to Marry the Factory Director’s Son Chapter 45

Chapter 45: The Clever Brother-in-Law Jiang

◎ Whose son has been raised well? ◎

“Wife, I’ve been around the area for over a month, and I still haven’t heard of any houses for sale. Where did you hear that houses can be bought and sold now? Could it be that you misheard?”

Although she was mentally prepared, Wei Xuan still felt a little disappointed when she first heard the news. After a moment of silence, she said, “Forget it. If there’s nothing available, then it’s fine. We’ll talk about it later.”

Jiang Che hated seeing his wife unhappy, but he really didn’t have a solution. He awkwardly scratched his neck and said, “Don’t worry, wife. I’ve got this covered. As long as the policy allows, I’ll definitely find a house that you’re happy with.”

Wei Xuan was amused by him: “You said that, so I’ll be waiting. But for now, even though we can’t buy houses, we can still look for a suitable storefront to rent. Once houses can be sold, we’ll be in a good position to buy it first.”

“That’s not difficult. But, wife, are you really sure you want to open a store and do business? Don’t just listen to what the news on the radio said about economic openness. It’s just talk. For example, look at how Wu Ge and them are still doing their small business quietly. If they’re not careful, they could be labeled as profiteering, and that’s not something we want to risk. We should think this through some more.”

Wei Xuan understood that perfectly. She didn’t plan to jump into the limelight just yet. She remembered watching a TV show in her past life where it was mentioned that the first individual business license wasn’t issued until the 1980s. So her current goal was to prepare well in advance, so when everything became official, she could immediately open her store.

In a few days, the year would end, and it would be 1979. There was still more than a year until 1980, so she could wait.

She then told Jiang Che, “This isn’t something that’ll be decided in one or two days. You can keep an eye out. The child is still young, and I definitely don’t have time to look for it myself. You also have to work, so by the time you find something, who knows how long it’ll take? By then, there might be more people in business already. Even if not, it would just be a waste of time, wouldn’t it?”

“That’s true. Alright, I’ll listen to you.”

The couple reached a consensus on this issue. Just then, their child woke up, and Wei Xuan fed her before changing her diaper. Little Round was then securely wrapped up by her dad and taken to the living room to meet the guests.

In the living room, Jiang Che’s father, the three brothers-in-law, and Jiang Che’s uncle were all sitting together chatting. When they saw Jiang Che walk in with the child, Jiang San’s brother-in-law immediately came over to look at the baby. “I heard from your third sister that the child is very fair and clean. Let me see for myself if she’s really that fair!”

Jiang Che didn’t stop him from looking. Little Round had just woken up and was in good spirits for the moment.

It was when he saw Nie Yuan De standing to the side that Jiang Che couldn’t resist making a sarcastic remark. “Oh, Second Brother-in-Law, you’re here too. Haven’t seen you in a while. Been busy lately?”

Nie Yuande pulled at the stiff corner of his mouth and gave a dry laugh, saying, “It’s fine, it’s fine.”

Jiang Che wanted to continue mocking him, but in the end, he shut his mouth under the warning glare from his older brother, Jiang.

Sister Jiang’s husband was good at reading the room. He noticed the subtle exchanges between the three and began to suspect something was off. Adding to that, he had rarely seen Nie Yuande, their relative, at the Jiang family this year, which only fueled his suspicion. When he got home that evening, he couldn’t resist whispering to his wife about it.

Sister Jiang, being simple-minded, immediately denied it when her husband spoke more and more absurdly: “That’s impossible. Could he have that kind of courage? You must be mistaken.”

“If you don’t believe me, then forget it.” Sister Jiang’s husband was convinced there was something going on between the three of them. The only thing that could make two older brothers upset with each other was one of two things: either Nie Yuande had someone else outside, or Nie Yuande had done something bad to Second Sister. He couldn’t guess exactly what it was, but he was sure there was something to it.

Seeing that his wife didn’t believe him, Sister Jiang’s husband became a little angry. He didn’t feel like continuing the conversation, so he decided to observe things for himself.

Of course, this was all just later. These thoughts only flashed through his mind for a moment.

After he finished checking on the child, Jiang Che handed the child to Jiang’s father. Jiang’s father, smiling from ear to ear as he looked at his little granddaughter, was sitting next to his brother-in-law, who, while offering compliments, was trying to find a chance to ask if the elder brother could help his son find a good job.

Thinking of this, Ge Dahai got angry. He had managed to send his son to a workers’ university, hoping that after graduation, his son would have a good future. Who knew, before his son could even graduate, the college entrance exams were restored. This put his son in an awkward position.

The official universities didn’t recognize his son’s degree, and finding a job became difficult. In desperation, he had no choice but to seek help from his brother-in-law, the factory director.

Jiang’s father still cared deeply for Ge Huai, his only nephew. Since his brother-in-law had spoken, he would give the respect he deserved.

After thinking for a moment, he said, “How about letting Ge Huai work temporarily in the sales department at the factory for a while? The factory has recently developed several new fabrics and is looking for a market. If he does well, he can be made permanent right away.”

Ge Dahai was envious that the elder brother could easily arrange a job for his son, though he quickly agreed, “I’ll thank you on behalf of that boy. I’ll talk to Ge Huai when I get back.”

“Don’t mention it. He’s my only nephew. By the way, from what you’re saying, is Ge Huai at home now? Why didn’t he come over today?”

Ge Dahai was caught off guard and paused for a moment before responding, “Oh, this kid said he had plans with a friend, that he had something to do. Who knows what he’s up to? Kids grow up, and you can’t control them.”

“Since he made plans with a friend, he shouldn’t break his word,” Jiang’s father didn’t think much of it. Boys weren’t interested in these social gatherings.

However, Nie Yuande, who had been listening to the entire conversation, couldn’t help but sneer. They could casually arrange a job for his nephew, but couldn’t say a good word for him in front of the leaders. Wasn’t it just that they looked down on him?

In fact, he was really overthinking it. No matter how close a nephew could be, could he ever be as close as a biological daughter? Let’s not even talk about the fact that the job Jiang’s father arranged for Ge Huai was only a temporary position. If he did well, he might get promoted, but if he didn’t, he could be fired at any time. Besides, Ge Huai had at least graduated from university. The job introduction wasn’t even considered using connections—at most, it was giving him a chance. Whether he did well or not would depend on his own abilities.

As for Nie Yuande, he wasn’t putting in any effort himself but was hoping to rely on Jiang’s father’s connections to get promoted. There was a big difference between the two situations.

But now, Nie Yuande had clearly made up his mind and was resentful of everyone in the Jiang family, including Second Sister Jiang.

Little Yuan Yuan was still young. After staying in her grandfather’s arms for a while, she began whining, wanting to find her mother. Jiang Che, fearing that his precious daughter would be hungry, immediately picked her up and went next door to find Wei Xuan when he heard the sound.

After putting the little one back to sleep, it was already noon.

The whole family couldn’t fit at one table, so fortunately, Jiang Che had borrowed a large round table from the cafeteria earlier.

He arranged the table: kids on one side, adults on the other.

Once everyone was seated, Jiang’s father raised his glass to toast Wei’s mother: ‘Mother-in-law, both Jiang Che’s mother and I are usually busy with work, thank you for taking care of the kids.’

Wei’s mother quickly followed suit, raising her glass in return: ‘Not at all, you’re both very busy people, it’s only right that you’re busy. Moreover, Wei Xuan is also my daughter, and Jiang Che is my son-in-law. It’s only natural for me to help, there’s no need for thanks.’

‘There should still be thanks. It’s not about what’s natural or not. Not just Jiang Che’s mother and I, but the kids should also thank you. I’ll drink first, you can drink as you wish.’

‘Mother-in-law, I also toast you.’ Jiang’s mother also raised her glass and drank.”

“When Wei’s mother saw that both her in-laws had drunk, she had no choice but to drink as well. Luckily, she had some tolerance for alcohol, and one glass wasn’t enough to make her drunk.

Once the formalities were done, the next step was to eat and drink well.

The meal lasted for nearly two hours before it finally ended. After the meal, the men had other matters to attend to, so they left. The women helped clear the table, and once they were done, they all went back to their own homes. Since everyone had had some alcohol at lunch, it was a good time to go home and take a nap.

Wei Xuan saw that her mother had gone back to the room to lie down. Once she confirmed that her mother wasn’t drunk, she felt much more at ease.

Wei Xuan had been worried that her mother might have had too much to drink, as she had several glasses of wine during the toasts.

Now that she saw her mother was fine, she said to Jiang Che, ‘Go boil some water. When mom wakes up, she’ll definitely be thirsty and need some water.’

‘Got it. You should go lie down too, wife. Otherwise, you’ll definitely sleep poorly tonight with the kids causing a fuss.’

Wei Xuan was indeed a little tired, so she nodded and went back to the room to sleep.

When Ge Dahai returned home, he saw that his son was still lying in bed and hadn’t gotten up. He was furious.

When his brother-in-law had asked him why he hadn’t come over, Ge Dahai had been too embarrassed to admit that his son would rather stay home and sleep than go to Jiang Che’s place.

‘Sleep, sleep, sleep. All you do is sleep all day.’ The more he thought about it, the angrier he got, and Ge Dahai stormed over and threw the blanket off his son.

Ge Huai felt the cold air and sat up with a jolt, frowning and complaining, ‘Dad, what are you doing? Do you want to freeze me to death?’

‘Freezing to death is better than being lazy. Do you see what time it is, and you’re still not up?’

Ge Huai ignored his father’s anger, pulled the blanket back, and lay down again, ‘Well, if I have nothing to do, why should I get up?’

‘I already asked your uncle today. He said you’re supposed to go work in the sales department at the factory.’

Ge Huai immediately woke up, ‘What sales department? Is it the one Jiang Che works at? Did Uncle say what position I’ll have?’

Ge Dahai was helpless, ‘Position? What position do you want?'”

“At the very least, it should be a position higher than Jiang Che’s!” After all, he was a college graduate—no way was he comparable to a slacker like Jiang Che.

Ge Dahai almost laughed from sheer anger at his son’s attitude. “Keep dreaming! Higher than Jiang Che? It’s just a temporary job—take it or leave it.” With that, he turned and walked away, ignoring his son’s expression.

When Jiang’s aunt (Ge Dahai’s wife) came home, she saw her husband sitting in the main room with a face full of anger. She asked, “What happened? Who pissed you off this time? Has Ge Huai eaten yet? Should I go make him something?”

“Sit down! Don’t go!”

Her husband’s sudden shout startled her.

“What’s going on? Why are you so mad?”

Ge Dahai said, “What do you think? Look at the fine son you’ve raised. He’s a grown man now, lazy and greedy. I finally found him a job, and he looks down on it. He thinks he’s some kind of god!” What he didn’t say out loud was that his son was actually worse than the old Jiang Che. Ever since Jiang Che got married, he had changed for the better. Sometimes Ge Dahai even wondered if all the bad things he used to say behind Jiang Che’s back were now coming back as karma—on his own son.
