Early the next morning, Lin Yutang woke up to find that Lin Zhi was no longer in the room. She stretched lazily, got dressed, and stepped into the yard, taking a careful look at her new home.
A small fence enclosed the modest yard, with only one proper room—the one they had slept in the night before. From the outside, the house was made of packed earth, its windows half-covered with tattered paper. The thatched roof looked like it would let in wind and rain during storms.
On either side of the main room stood two small, rudimentary structures: a tiny kitchen and an outhouse, both extremely basic.
Lin Yutang sighed. Her money-making plan needed to happen soon. Even with the advantage of her spatial ability, she couldn’t just renovate the house outright—she lacked the skills, and it would surely raise suspicions.
Seeing Lin Zhi boiling water in the kitchen, Lin Yutang walked over and said, “Sis, don’t bother making breakfast. I’ll cook something delicious for you.”
Lin Zhi, after all, was only sixteen and still quite young. Having seen so many delicious treats and fun things the day before, she didn’t stand on ceremony with her sister and nodded in agreement.
Lin Yutang slipped into her space and first disposed of the packaging and bottles from the food, drinks, and supplies they’d used the previous day by tossing them into a large trash bin near the side entrance of the department store. She had discovered this bin by accident the day before and noticed that whatever she threw in there disappeared—saving her the trouble of dealing with trash.
After throwing away the garbage, she headed straight to the instant noodle section. Instant noodles had been a beloved comfort food in her previous life—especially among busy workers. They were convenient, affordable, and delicious! She grabbed some essential pairings: ham sausages and marinated eggs!
She also picked up two bottles of fresh milk from the refrigerated section. Both sisters needed to nourish their bodies. At sixteen and fourteen years old, they looked more like twelve-year-olds, small and undernourished.
Exiting her space, she first handed Lin Zhi a pair of women’s underwear and a pack of sanitary pads, showing her how to use them. Then, she went to the kitchen to fetch hot water for the noodles.
For convenience, she chose cup-style braised beef noodles. She tore off the lid, added the seasoning packets, and placed the ham sausage and marinated egg inside. After pouring in the hot water, she sealed the cup with the fork to keep the heat in.
As Lin Zhi entered the kitchen, a rich, savory aroma greeted her at the door. Just the smell alone hinted at how delicious the broth would be!
Sitting at the table, Lin Yutang pushed one of the noodle cups toward her sister. Lin Zhi stared curiously at the strange red container. Was that intense, mouthwatering smell coming from this?
“Sis, open the lid. It’s ready to eat,” Lin Yutang said, glancing at the alarm clock she had brought out from her space. As she spoke, she opened her own cup.
Instantly, a rich and fragrant aroma filled the air. Lin Zhi peered into her cup: there was a strange, round cake of noodles, a dark-brown egg, and two long sticks—everything looked so novel!
Lin Yutang used her fork to mix the noodles, and Lin Zhi followed suit. Then, watching her sister dig in, she began eating too.
“You can eat these noodles just by soaking them in hot water?” Lin Zhi asked in amazement.
“Yep! They’re super tasty. People from my time loved these—they’re convenient and delicious!” Lin Yutang slurped a mouthful of noodles. “Mmm! Just like I remember!”
Lin Zhi eagerly took a slurp herself, her eyes lighting up as she looked at Lin Yutang. The words “so good” were practically written all over her face!
What an incredible flavor! The noodles were chewy and springy, each strand soaked in the savory broth. The thing called a ham sausage was packed with meaty goodness! The marinated egg was firm and flavorful, with a rich aroma, and the yolk wasn’t dry at all. She took a sip of the soup—it was so delicious it felt like her eyebrows might melt off!
As Lin Yutang and Lin Zhi happily lost themselves in enjoying their meal, the little bun from Aunt Li’s next door was driven to tears by the enticing smell!
