Wang San glanced toward a corner, where only a bare bundle of straw remained—the candied hawthorn skewers were all gone.
He spoke a little guiltily,
“They were eaten.”
“Eaten? Then you’ll have to compensate me,”
Wang Man snapped.
She didn’t care who ate them. As far as she was concerned, Wang San needed to hand over the money—period.
Their commotion had already drawn the attention of the nearby gamblers. Seeing the scene unfold, they stopped gambling and turned to watch the drama.
“Never thought that good-for-nothing Wang San would get reined in by a little girl. Looks like he’s actually afraid of her?”
someone murmured.
The skinny dealer, growing impatient, waved his hand and scolded,
“Shoo, shoo! Where did this little girl come from? Trying to stir up trouble?”
Wang Man looked at him and replied seriously,
“I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m just here for Wang San.”
The skinny dealer waved toward Wang San,
“Wang San, what are you standing around for? Go settle your business and come back later. Don’t f***ing mess up my table.”
Wang San nodded and reached out to tug Wang Man’s arm,
“Manniang, let’s talk at home.”
Wang Man didn’t intend to make a scene in the gambling den anyway. She let Wang San pull her toward the exit.
Suddenly, she felt someone pinch her bottom.
She whipped her head around and saw a lecherous middle-aged man quickly withdrawing his hand.
Without a second thought, she raised her foot and delivered a sharp kick to his chest.
The man was sent flying, crashing onto the table in front of the skinny dealer, causing the crowd to scatter with a loud gasp.
The lecher clutched his chest in pain, a grimace twisting his face as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
The skinny dealer was furious when he saw this.
“Hey! You little brat—are you just here to stir up trouble?
You’ve got some nerve, hitting someone in our gambling den! Tired of living, are you?”
Wang Man calmly lowered her leg and replied unhurriedly,
“He just grabbed my backside. I had every right to hit him.”
The moment Wang San heard that, he lost it. He rushed over and landed several punches on the lecherous man.
“You f***ing want to die? You dare lay a hand on my woman?!”
As soon as those words left his mouth, the crowd erupted once again.
“What? That skinny little girl who looks like a bamboo stick is Wang San’s wife?”
People began whispering among themselves. Someone who knew the story added,
“That’s the little wife Wang San bought with silver a few days ago.”
Someone burst out laughing on the spot:
“Yo, is Wang San actually afraid of his little wife?”
“No kidding. Just look at that girl—she’s clearly got a temper.
Otherwise, how would she dare to kick someone in a gambling den?
She’s done for now. That girl’s really in for it.”
Someone else sneered,
“A bought little girl acting all high and mighty? Wang San, just sell her off to a brothel—let’s see how long she keeps acting tough then.”
Everyone chimed in with their own comments, all watching the drama unfold with a gleeful air of amusement.
Seeing that the skinny dealer was angry, Wang San quickly reached out and grabbed Wang Man, putting on a fawning smile as he said,
“Brother Houzi, the girl doesn’t know any better. Sorry for ruining everyone’s fun—I’ll take her away right now.”
“Take her away? You think it’s that easy?”
The skinny dealer sneered.
“She wrecked our place, and you think a few words are enough to brush it off?”
It was clear he had no intention of letting the matter go.
Wang San’s forced smile was barely holding up anymore.
“Brother Houzi, for the sake of all the years we’ve known each other, let this one slide, yeah?”
As he spoke, he clasped his hands together in a respectful salute.
The skinny dealer scratched his head, glancing at the lecherous man still sprawled on the table, then at Wang Man.
What Wang San said wasn’t wrong—he’d seen it himself. That old pervert really had crossed the line.
But the fact that this little girl had dared to throw hands in his place? That was a slap in the face.
Letting it go just like that wouldn’t sit well with his pride.
After a moment’s thought, he said,
“Wang San, I won’t make things hard for you. But look at this mess—you gotta take responsibility, right?”
He pointed to the table, now a total wreck.
Wang San just wanted to settle things quickly. He nodded.
“Alright, I’ll pay.”
Clenching his teeth, he pulled out a heavy coin pouch from his chest—full to the brim with copper coins, judging by the sound.
Just as he was about to hand it over, Wang Man snatched it away.
“This is my money. If you want to compensate them, find your own way.”
Wang San was a little stunned.
“Wait, Man-niang, let’s just settle this first, and I’ll explain everything to you later.”
“Explain what?” Wang Man snapped. “This whole thing was his fault—why should we be the ones to pay?
If he hadn’t grabbed my butt, would I have kicked him?
What, is this how your gambling den handles things?
You think we’re pushovers just because we look easy to bully?
Why aren’t you going after that sleazebag for compensation?”
Seeing how quickly she was rattling off her words, Wang San panicked and tried to cover her mouth.
“Man-niang, please, stop talking! This isn’t the place to speak recklessly.”
But Wang Man slapped his hand away, furious.
“Do I look like someone who takes injustice lying down?
Or do I look like some gullible fool to you?”
A rough, gravelly voice suddenly cut in:
“Oh? Then what do you want to do?”
Startled, Wang San instinctively pulled Wang Man behind him.
“Boss Jin, it’s a misunderstanding, all just a big misunderstanding! Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
As he spoke, he tugged at Wang Man again.
“Come on, let’s go home. Now.”
This time his tone was firm, leaving no room for argument.
But Boss Jin—known as Jin Yá (Gold Tooth)—held up a hand.
“Don’t rush off. Let’s get things straight before you leave.
Otherwise, people might say I, Jin Yá, have no class—bullying the weak and letting things slide.”
“N-no, of course not, that’s not true at all,” Wang San stammered, though he didn’t dare say anything else about leaving.
He knew perfectly well what Boss Jin was capable of, and crossing him was not an option.
Even Skinny Monkey looked spooked.
“Boss…”
Jin Yá waved him off.
“Bring Hui Si over here.”
The “Hui Si” Boss Jin mentioned was none other than the sleazy man from earlier.
Upon hearing Jin Ya’s words, Hui Si didn’t even wait to be dragged over—he staggered toward them on his own, trembling.
“Boss Jin, please spare me this once! I—I was just blinded by lard, I lost my mind for a moment…”
Before he could finish, Jin Ya casually gave the order:
“Someone, break that hand of his.”
His voice was light, but the words were cruel.
All the while, Jin Ya didn’t even look at Hui Si. His eyes were fixed on Wang Man, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
He wanted to see just how bold this little girl truly was.
Wang Man could feel Jin Ya watching her, but she deliberately avoided eye contact.
It wasn’t because she was afraid—she just had no interest in any sort of intense staredown with a thug like him.
Otherwise, her eyes might hurt from all the forced drama.
As for breaking a hand—what did that have to do with her? It wasn’t her hand.
Hui Si dropped to his knees, terrified, and began kowtowing frantically.
“Boss Jin, please, I beg you, spare me just this once! I’ll never do it again—I swear, I won’t!”
Regret washed over him. If he had known things would end up like this, he would never have tried to take advantage.
Who would’ve thought this skinny little girl would be gutsy enough to cause a scene here of all places?
Jin Ya sneered, full of disdain.
“Why are you begging me? If you want mercy, go beg the young lady over there.”
That jab hit Hui Si like a lightning bolt—suddenly everything clicked.
He spun around on his knees and kowtowed to Wang Man, pleading:
“Miss, please! I’m begging you—please spare me this once. I swear I’ll never do it again!”
Wang Man met Jin Ya’s amused, expectant look and curled her lip slightly.
Don’t think she couldn’t tell—this bastard just wanted to see her humiliate herself.
Hmph, then I’ll definitely not give you what you want.
“My punishment has already been carried out,”
Wang Man said coldly.
Her meaning was clear: that kick just now was Hui Si’s punishment.
