Chapter 55
In the private hospital.
Zheng Mingyue and Ji Qingyu hurried over, their legs weak. An hour ago, they received a call from Feng Chengze, saying that while driving along Songjing Road, a supercar suddenly rushed out from an intersection.
Fortunately, Feng Chengze’s Bentley had been modified and didn’t suffer much impact; though the car door was dented a bit, it wasn’t a big issue.
The largest shareholder of this hospital was the Zheng family. As soon as the vehicle arrived at the basement, the relevant leaders were already waiting. In the elevator, they clearly explained the current situation, mainly to reassure them.
The driver’s seat had good protection measures, but the driver’s chest and abdomen still hit the steering wheel. He was currently undergoing X-rays, but it shouldn’t be a big problem.
Initially, Feng Chengze would have been slightly injured too, but Feng Yu saw the supercar first and pulled him over at the fastest speed…
As for Feng Yu, when he lunged toward Feng Chengze, his head hit the bulletproof glass, causing some bleeding, and he fainted before reaching the hospital.
“Don’t worry,” the director said carefully. “Second Young Master is probably still jet-lagged and hasn’t rested well recently, so his body is weak. The wound has been bandaged, but he might need to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation.”
Even in ordinary families, children’s health is always a priority. Although Second Young Master is fine, for safety’s sake, he should stay in the hospital for a few days.
Zheng Mingyue’s face turned pale. “What exactly happened? It wasn’t clear over the phone!”
It was the first time Ji Qingyu saw Zheng Mingyue speak angrily, but at this moment, she couldn’t think about anything else. Her mind was filled with the words “Feng Chengze, car accident.”
Although he reassured her over the phone that he was fine, she was still very anxious and had to see him with her own eyes to be at ease. How could an accident happen in the blink of an eye?
The director also felt troubled. “Chairman Feng arrived half an hour ago and seems to be handling the matter. He hasn’t disclosed anything else.”
Zheng Mingyue held back her anger. She almost cursed out loud. This wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the insistence on having the two sons pick him up.
At this moment, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law shared the same thoughts.
After exiting the elevator, Zheng Mingyue gently patted Ji Qingyu’s hand and said, “I’ll go check on A Yu.”
This was the Zheng family’s hospital, so naturally, the brothers wouldn’t be in the same room. Ji Qingyu nodded, trying to keep her composure despite her anxiety. Led by the director’s secretary, she quickly went to Feng Chengze’s room.
The secretary stopped at the door and knocked. Instead of hearing “come in,” they heard steady footsteps approaching the door. She stepped back two steps and smiled, “Mrs. Feng, I’ll go to the nurse’s station. If you need anything, you can press the bell.”
“Okay, thank you.”
The director’s secretary had just taken two steps when the ward door opened. She glanced back and saw Ji Qingyu’s light, flowing skirt. As a wife seeing her husband, she could no longer maintain her calm facade. She anxiously rushed over to check if her husband was injured, but he hugged her and carried her into the ward. They were as loving as the rumors said.
“Stop!”
Ji Qingyu was terrified and hurriedly raised her hand to push Feng Chengze. “Are you okay?”
Feng Chengze had changed into loose hospital clothes. Without answering, he held her waist and walked inside. “I told you on the phone, I’m fine.”
Ji Qingyu didn’t believe him, so he had to raise his arm to let her check.
They were so familiar with each other that she wasn’t shy. She lifted his shirt and carefully inspected his upper body. Seeing that she was about to pull down his pants, he helplessly grabbed her hand and reminded her, “Lock the door first.”
Although others would knock before entering, Feng Chengze didn’t want anyone else to see what they shouldn’t.
Ji Qingyu reluctantly withdrew her hand and went to the door, locking it while feeling it was a bit odd. What could they do in the ward? Wouldn’t locking the door cause misunderstandings?
“I should stay in the ward overnight.” Feng Chengze bent down, took a bottle of mineral water from the mini-fridge, and opened it for her. “Let Yuan Bao sleep at the old house tonight. Mom will go back, don’t worry.”
“Then…”
“You stay here.”
Ji Qingyu instantly felt less worried but still had lingering fears. She finally had some mental space for other things. When they didn’t know the reason for her breakup with Feng Yu five years ago, he analyzed with her that the number of traffic accidents on Songjing Road each year could be counted on one hand. So, he speculated that someone had deliberately forced Feng Yu’s car to stop.
So…
Could this accident also be man-made?
Seeing Ji Qingyu frowning, Feng Chengze came over, handed her the water, and asked, “You haven’t had dinner yet, right? What do you want to eat? I’ll have someone bring it over.”
“No.” She grabbed his hand and urgently asked, “What exactly happened? Why do I feel something’s off?”
Feng Chengze looked at her for a moment, then pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head. This close embrace brought their hearts together, but she couldn’t see the deep emotions in his eyes. “My dad is handling it. Don’t worry. It’s just a small matter.”
Ji Qingyu wanted to ask more, but he held her so tightly that she couldn’t even lift her head. She thought for a moment, listening to the steady rhythm of his chest, and softly replied, “Okay.”
“Stay tonight,” he said again. “I’m not used to having others take care of me.”
“So, I have to be your caregiver today?” She exhaled slowly. It was strange. Perhaps because Feng Chengze was as reliable as she had always imagined, the many questions she initially had were easily soothed by his attitude. As he said, everything was a small matter. When others said these four words, it seemed like a big deal to her. But when he said it, it inexplicably made her feel convinced and at ease.
Feng Chengze’s gloomy mood was swept away by her words. He affectionately rubbed his chin against her hair and chuckled, “What are you always thinking about?”
Ji Qingyu was confused, “What do you mean?”
When Chairman Feng and Zheng Mingyue arrived, Ji Qingyu was eating at the coffee table in the suite. Feng Chengze, dressed in hospital clothes, was peeling an apple for her. Chairman Feng glanced at them and wondered if he would ever get to eat an apple peeled by his son in this lifetime.
Ji Qingyu looked embarrassed, unsure whether to continue eating the piece of rib she was holding. She felt she had a big heart. Her husband was hospitalized, and she still had the appetite to eat. She wanted to ask her in-laws if they had eaten and if they wanted to join, but she swallowed the words.
“Young and strong,” Chairman Feng smiled. “He should be fine.”
Zheng Mingyue was seriously flipping through the examination report, occasionally parting her son’s thick hair to check for injuries. Hearing this, her face turned as black as the bottom of a pot. “You can still laugh?”
Chairman Feng immediately restrained himself. “I told you he’s fine, but you keep worrying. The air in the hospital isn’t good. You should go back early.”
After speaking, he looked at Ji Qingyu and softened his tone, “It’s cramped here, and the medical staff are responsible. Why don’t you go back with your mom?”
“No.” Feng Chengze let Zheng Mingyue check his arms and head and refused on her behalf. “She won’t sleep well if she goes back.”
“Mom,” he called, “let Yuan Bao sleep with you tonight.”
It’s not the grandmother accompanying the granddaughter, but the granddaughter accompanying the grandmother. Without Yuan Bao, Zheng Mingyue wouldn’t leave the hospital no matter what. She sighed and nodded, “Alright, with you two not around, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with her sleeping alone.”
“I told you to go back early. You’re neither a doctor, a nurse, nor a caregiver,” Chairman Feng grumbled. “Sitting here is just suffering. They’re both under thirty. One is thirty-three, whose health isn’t better than yours?”
Ungrateful sons. It’s a shame that we old bones still have to run around.
“Enough, stop nagging!” Zheng Mingyue raised her voice impatiently.
Chairman Feng fell silent.
Ji Qingyu was extremely surprised, not because her mother-in-law’s demeanor was so different from her usual dignified and gentle self, but because she felt her father-in-law seemed quite afraid of her mother-in-law… She hadn’t noticed this in their few interactions.
Feng Chengze, on the other hand, wasn’t surprised at all and continued peeling the apple with a calm expression.
Chairman Feng and Zheng Mingyue didn’t stay long in the ward and were soon ready to leave.
Before leaving, Zheng Mingyue pulled Ji Qingyu aside and whispered, full of a mother’s concern for her son, “Chengze is always focused on work. He might want to be discharged early tomorrow morning, and I can’t stop him. But Qingyu, if he feels unwell, tries to persuade him to rest for a few more days. It won’t delay anything important. Let his father cover for him for a few days.”
In the past, Ji Qingyu would never have responded to this, and even if she did, it would have been perfunctory. But now, she solemnly agreed, “Don’t worry, I’ll watch him closely tonight.”
If Feng Chengze frowned so much, she would have noted it down.
Zheng Mingyue was taken aback and showed her first smile after receiving the call. “You need to rest well, too. Were you scared today?”
“A little,” Ji Qingyu admitted softly. In her mind, she was already cursing the perpetrator’s entire family.
Zheng Mingyue comforted her in return, “I’ve known Director Wang for many years. If he says it’s fine, then it’s fine.”
On a whim, Ji Qingyu asked, “Did Dad catch any fish?”
Zheng Mingyue burst out laughing.
Hearing his wife’s laughter, Chairman Feng, who was discussing serious matters with his son by the window, looked over. His seemingly relaxed but actually tense body was slightly relaxed.
Feng Chengze followed his gaze.
Ji Qingyu, sensing something, turned her head and met his eyes, smiling. He suddenly remembered that she was very young, six years younger than him, yet he saw a comforting look in her eyes.
Chairman Feng and Zheng Mingyue left the ward and took the elevator to the underground parking lot. He didn’t get in the car. Zheng Mingyue knew he had something to do but still pulled him aside and whispered, “Old Luo is getting on in years. Speak to him nicely.”
Chairman Feng smirked, “I have nothing to say to that old man. If he doesn’t send that brat who doesn’t use his head to Africa to mine for twenty or thirty years, this won’t be over.”
Thinking of his family’s similar situation, he couldn’t laugh anymore.
