Chapter 13 : Selling the Job Again
“The Shu family is really calculating. Siying’s job ended up benefiting them, and now their biological daughter can stay in the city,” someone who didn’t get along with the Shu family said sourly.
“Shu Siying isn’t their biological child. They raised her for eighteen years and did their best. She should be grateful. The Shu family’s real daughter suffered in the countryside for eighteen years in her place. She only went to the countryside now to make things right,” someone who was close to the Shu family countered.
Public opinion was divided. Some people felt pity and sympathy for Yun Siying, while others supported the Shu family’s actions.
When Shu Zhisheng returned home and learned that Yun Siying had left, his expression remained unchanged, but he sighed. This child had left not only their home but also their hearts, there was no longer any attachment to the Shu family.
“Grandpa, it’s not safe for Siying to be out there alone. I’ll go look for her,” Shu Chengzhi said, still feeling a sense of reluctance.
“No need. She has her own path to follow,” the old man waved his hand, not wanting to say more.
Yun Siying took a bus to a guesthouse near the train station and went into her space to prepare supplies. She had asked around and learned that the countryside she was going to was cold in the winter and the stay would be long. She got ready by packing quilts and cotton clothes.
She already had quilts in her space and could choose from black, white, or gray quilt covers, but she had to buy other items. The ones in her space were too advanced to use without drawing attention.
After some thought, she began studying her space. She went to the well in the yard, scooped a cup of water, and drank it, it tasted sweet but nothing else happened. Where was the spiritual spring?
Why did other time-traveling women have magical springs that healed all ailments and enhanced beauty, while hers was just plain spring water? Where was her miracle spring?
Disappointed, she went to the rice field in her space, wondering if she could farm it using just her mind. As soon as she thought about tilling the land, the soil turned over instantly and water welled up. When she thought about raising seedlings, rice plants sprouted and stretched out across the field.
Seeing this, her disappointment vanished. She could farm with her mind. She planted corn, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and a variety of vegetables across two acres of land. Each type covered only a small area, but there was a wide variety.
The next day, Yun Siying went to the black market. She didn’t have many ration tickets, so she exchanged what she had for industrial, meat, cloth, sugar, and other national coupons. Then she went to the department store to buy needed supplies, packed them up, and sent them by post to the countryside.
Looking up at the scorching sun, her heart felt heavy. She hadn’t believed in reincarnation before, but now she hoped that the original soul of this body could be reborn into a better life in the next. She returned to the black market and bought incense, paper money, candles, a coffin, and a tombstone.
After paying, she had them delivered to a designated location on the outskirts of the city. Once the delivery people left, she stored the items in her space and hiked into the mountains. She found a spot with good feng shui, took out a hoe from her space, and started digging a grave. Thankfully, her supernatural powers had come with her, so her strength was far greater.
An hour later, she had finished digging. She placed the original owner’s favorite clothes, shoes, and socks into the coffin, along with the incense, paper money, candles, and the tombstone she had bought. She also cut off five inches of her hair and placed it inside before closing the coffin.
After burying it, she erected the tombstone and engraved it with the original owner’s name, birth date, death date, and burial date. She lit the incense and candles and burned the paper money. Then she spoke softly to the grave.
“I hope you can be reborn into a good family in your next life and live a happy, peaceful life.”
She went down the mountain with a heavy heart, her thoughts lingering on the culprit, Shu Ruxue. A new idea began to take shape in her mind. Sitting in front of the vanity mirror, she started putting on makeup. As she painted, the reflection in the mirror gradually transformed into Shu Ruxue’s face. After changing into different clothes, she exited the space.
She clearly remembered that Shu Ruxue was scheduled to start work the next day. Taking the bus, she headed to the personnel department of the machinery factory. Upon seeing the staff inside, she approached a bit awkwardly and said, “Director Zhang, sorry to bother you again. I’ve signed up to go to the countryside for rural construction. Could you help me give up this job?”
“Comrade Shu, are you sure?” Director Zhang asked, surprised. His nephew had just graduated and hadn’t yet found a job.
“I’m sure, Director Zhang,” Yun Siying replied firmly. There was no way she’d let this job fall into the hands of someone who had killed the original owner. If Shu Ruxue had merely been the Shu family’s biological daughter, perhaps there would be room for forgiveness. But she had deliberately taken the original owner’s place and caused her death, how could that be forgiven?
“All right then. How about 800 yuan, does that sound fair?” Director Zhang asked. At the time, jobs usually sold for 600 to 700 yuan, but Yun Siying’s position was an easy office job, so he offered a higher price.
“Okay.” Yun Siying agreed without hesitation. She knew the going rate from the original owner’s memories and understood that 800 yuan was a good deal.
“Then come back this afternoon to complete the handover,” Director Zhang said cheerfully. After Yun Siying left, he took an early lunch break and quickly biked over to his sister’s house.
Yun Siying found a secluded spot, entered her space, cooked a meal, and took a nap. When she woke up, it was already afternoon, so she rushed to the machinery factory.
“Comrade Shu, you’re here. This is my nephew, Guo Fugui,” Director Zhang introduced. They had been waiting a while, but Shu Ruxue had never shown up perhaps she regretted it and changed her mind?
After exchanging greetings, they began the handover process. Yun Siying imitated Shu Ruxue’s handwriting and signed her name. Everything went smoothly, and she earned an extra 800 yuan.
Once everything was done, Yun Siying returned to the guesthouse and then entered her space to enjoy a good meal. Afterward, she took stock of her finances. She had over 300 yuan in personal savings, plus 1,800 yuan from selling the job twice, and 1,000 yuan from Tang Lingxue. After spending a bit more than 380 yuan today, she still had over 2,700 yuan in total a small fortune in this era.
It was said that guesthouse staff occasionally checked rooms, so she left the space and lay on the bed. Unable to fall asleep, she took out a novel from her space and started reading. As she read, she grumbled inwardly, this heroine was unbelievable. The male lead had abused her so many times, yet she still clung to him as her first love. She was hopelessly love-brained.
Suddenly, with a loud bang, a man in military uniform crashed through the window and into her room. Then everything went still. She quickly put the book back into her space, got out of bed, and approached the man. Confirming that he was unconscious, she searched his pocket and found his ID, he was a soldier.
