Chapter 69 : I want to study medicine and pharmaceuticals
At that moment, the gate of the Youth Courtyard creaked open, followed by heavy, hurried footsteps. Several people looked toward the courtyard and saw Shu Chengzhi returning, soaked to the bone like a drowned chicken caught in the rain. His face was terribly gloomy. After he entered the house, Han Yuecheng commented, “Didn’t he go to the Li family’s house for dinner? Why did he come back drenched? And with such a long horse face?”
“The sky’s clear. He must’ve fallen into the river,” Yun Siying said with a deepening smile. She clearly remembered that going to the Li house required passing by the river. There was no way he’d fall in on his own. Judging by his stormy face, there had to be a story behind it.
“Keep eating,” Nangong Ruochen said. He and Chen Banghua exchanged a look, each having their own guesses.
The four of them had only eaten a few bites when Shu Chengzhi reappeared, now in dry clothes. Without a word, he walked straight into their room, took a bowl and chopsticks to serve himself rice, pushed Han Yuecheng aside, sat down in his seat, and silently began eating with focus.
“Hey now, Shu Chengzhi, we didn’t invite you to dinner. You’ve got some nerve,” Han Yuecheng grumbled, looking at the silent man. With no other choice, he dragged over a bench and sat down again to eat.
Seeing how fast Shu Chengzhi was grabbing the food, the others quickened their pace too. It turned into a race to eat. Yun Siying was the fastest and became the first to finish. Luckily, there was a lot of food today otherwise with this extra mouth to feed, it definitely wouldn’t have been enough.
The meal was hearty, as usual. Fortunately, three of them were on government salaries, and Yun Siying had brought a large amount of money when she came to the countryside, so they weren’t afraid to eat lavishly.
During the meal, Li Minglang came to the Youth Courtyard to fetch Shu Chengzhi back for dinner, but he declined.
“Captain Shu, didn’t you go to the Li family’s for dinner? Why did you come back looking like a drowned rat?” Han Yuecheng asked, puzzled.
“None of your business,” Shu Chengzhi replied coldly before riding off on his bicycle.
Yun Siying was in high spirits. She released her mental power, focusing directly on the Li family, who had just finished dinner.
Xu Ziying looked at Tang Lingxue and said, “Sister Lingxue, thank you. Chengzhi saved my daughter Yanyan from the river. He’s truly our family’s benefactor. But, as it happened, a few gossipy village aunties were there and saw everything. When Chengzhi was carrying Yanyan, her clothes were in disarray her chest exposed quite a bit and because of the hot weather, their clothes were thin. The two of them were hugging each other and had physical contact.”
“If word spreads in the village tomorrow, Yanyan’s reputation will be ruined. How will she go on living here? Could Chengzhi marry my Yanyan? I know this request may seem ungrateful, but I hope you can understand a mother’s worry.”
Tang Lingxue was in a foul mood and looked at Shu Ruxue with a complicated expression. When Li Yanyan had accidentally fallen into the river, it was Ruxue who urged her son to rescue her. Her son grabbed a nearby bamboo pole to offer to Yanyan so she could grab hold and be pulled up.
But just as he picked up the pole, Ruxue shoved him into the river. Li Yanyan, who was in the water, immediately clung to her son and hugged him tightly. At that moment, several village aunties happened to pass by and stopped to watch. Chengzhi had no choice but to carry Yanyan ashore.
But Yanyan continued to cling to him tightly. As more and more villagers gathered, he could only carry her to the Li family’s home, wearing a dark expression then hurriedly fled back to the Youth Farm in a panic.
“Sister Ziying, it’s not that serious. My son is a good person who saves lives. He hasn’t reached that point yet,” Tang Lingxue said loftily. How could she be so fond of Li Yanyan, just a country girl?
“Sister Lingxue, I don’t want to embarrass you. Let’s not talk about this for now. Anyway, you’ve all been in the village recently. If no unfavorable rumors about Yanyan spread here, let’s just drop it. But if rumors damage Yanyan’s reputation, then Chengzhi will have no choice but to marry Yanyan. Otherwise, if it leaks out, it could also ruin Chengzhi’s future.” Xu Ziying smiled politely but her words carried an implicit threat.
After leaving the Li household, Tang Lingxue asked unhappily, “Ruxue, why did you push your brother into the river?”
Shu Ruxue thought of her parents’ explanation and felt guilty. Trying to hide her guilt from Tang Lingxue, she lowered her head and admitted, “I’m sorry, Mom! I—I was scared and panicked at the time, so I accidentally pushed my brother. I really didn’t expect things to turn out like this. You can hit me or scold me.”
Shu Ruxue finally understood what her parents were scheming. Could it be that since she hadn’t yet obtained the “thing,” her parents were impatient and wanted Yanyan to get it first? Her parents loved Yanyan more. If Yanyan got it first, would her parents treat her the same way as before?
Had she known her parents’ plan, she would never have pushed Shu Chengzhi into the river to save someone. She was truly worried that Yanyan would get into trouble, so she pushed Shu Chengzhi into the water to save her. Maybe she was too concerned. At that moment, she also remembered that Yanyan was a very good swimmer. How could she have missed such an obvious fact?
‘Hey! You can’t blame all this on her. Who could have expected something like this to happen?’ Though Tang Lingxue had many complaints, she couldn’t really blame her daughter.
Yun Siying watched this drama with interest, then withdrew her mental power and went back to her room. She hated washing dishes most of all. After entering her space and practicing the stage body technique, she noticed her body was much stronger. It seemed that practicing the stage body technique these past few days had some effect. She thought that soon she could continue absorbing zombie crystal cores to improve her superpowers.
After washing up, she thought about the mountains behind the village. There must be many valuable medicinal herbs there, which could be sold for a lot of money. Her wood-type superpower could extract the essence of herbs once it reached level five. If she had excellent medical skills and could make pills, and used her wood-type power to extract the herbs’ essence, the medicine she made would be twice as effective, making it much more valuable than just selling raw herbs.
Since awakening her mental power, she had developed a photographic memory, so it was the perfect time to start studying medicine. But first, she needed to find a master. Most of the great Chinese medicine masters of this era had been demoted. Thinking of the word “demoted,” she planned to check outside the cowshed when she had time to see if any famous medical experts had been demoted here.
When she was in her last days, she had collected all sorts of random items. Thinking of this, she entered the space’s warehouse again. Looking at the neatly arranged pile of books, an idea struck her, and all the medical books flew to the side and arranged themselves neatly.
