Chapter 26: Encounter with the Yu Family
Riding swiftly along the way, Chen Xin spoke to the horse that seemed to have broken free from its reins with a smile, “Chao Feng, you’ve worked hard these past few days.”
Chao Feng, running faster, seemed to say there was no problem.
Soon, darkness fell. Chen Xin continued to ride by the moonlight for another three hours, finally stopping to rest at a place by the lake on the edge of a forest outside Fengxin Town.
Leaving Chao Feng to graze on the grass, Chen Xin leisurely lit a fire and roasted the fish skewered on branches. It took some time to clean the fish scales and guts.
Before long, the fragrance of fish wafted in the air, making even Chao Feng nearby shake its ears and sniff, its eyes immediately drooling at the fish in Chen Xin’s hand. However, seeing the gruesome thing in its owner’s hand, it doubted its own nose. How could it smell something delicious? Shouldn’t it smell burnt? Lowering its head, it decided to eat grass obediently.
Chen Xin’s expression was also a bit unpleasant. She didn’t like eating sashimi; the meat had to be fully cooked. However, while the meat was cooked, it was burnt without the support of oil.
Sniffing it under her nose, there wasn’t much of a burnt smell. Then she tore off a piece and tasted it reluctantly. She managed to swallow it down. In this place, Chen Xin couldn’t afford to be picky; getting full was the priority.
—
The tranquil night, with a cool breeze blowing, the stars and moon in the sky, and the rippling blue water, was beautiful but a bit noisy, disrupting the scenery.
Ignoring the sound of swords clashing in the distance, Chen Xin closed her eyes to rest, while Chao Feng lay beside her like a guardian.
The campfire was burning low, but there were still sporadic sparks crackling, illuminating the area. In this dark forest, it was like a beacon, quite conspicuous.
“Young Lady, there’s a fire over there, there must be people. Perhaps we can get help if we go over.” A masked black-clothed person noticed the fire and said hopefully to the young girl on her back.
But as soon as she spoke, she gave the opponent a chance to strike. Her arm was slashed deeply, blood gushing out instantly.
“Ah!”
The black-clothed man screamed in pain, her sword falling to the ground. She gritted her teeth, her black clothes already stained with blood, realizing it was blood, both from the enemy and herself.
“Yu Yi!”
“Yu Yi! Let me down quickly.”
Seeing Yu Yi, a young girl of eleven or twelve, on her back, unable to hold the sword anymore after being injured, her frail and pale face was filled with panic and struggle as she asked her guard to put her down.
“Hmph, now you’re in no position to flee? You’ve caused us so many losses, and now we’ll be punished by the master again!”
At this moment, a woman in a black-grey robe with the emblem of a white cloud, clearly the leader, stepped forward with a curved knife, looking at the two Yu family remnants in front of her with cold and merciless eyes.
“Do as you wish.” The leader said to the fewer than twenty guards, who were originally more than thirty.
“Yes, leader.” The guards knelt down, fists clenched respectfully.
Yu Yi, surrounded in the middle, felt anxious and tried to delay as much as possible.
Her eyes were bloodshot and fierce as she roared, “Don’t think I don’t know you are royal guards. Our Yu family, every one of us, over a hundred members, were killed by your Yunwen Kingdom. Even if we become ghosts, we won’t let you off.”
The girl on her back also looked at the people in front of her with hatred in her eyes, and at the mastermind behind this assassination, who was planning from thousands of miles away.
Sure enough, the leader looked ferociously at the two: “Kill!”
“Young Lady, I’ll cover you. Run away, as far as possible.”
Glancing at the fire, Yu Yi felt she had been too impulsive just now, almost causing harm to others. Maybe the people over there were just powerless civilians? In that case, it would only add more innocent souls to the tragedy.
“No, we go together. I only have you left.” The girl choked up, her eyes red, softly saying.
But who among the people present wasn’t skilled in martial arts and had internal strength? The conversation between the lady and servant was clearly heard, and they thought bitterly, the dogs of the mourning family were overreaching.
“Young Lady, you’ll have a chance for revenge if you escape!” Yu Yi scolded her, actually hoping the young lady would listen and escape, preferably without seeking revenge.
How could the royal family be avenged? How many people in the world could do it?
But the guards ignored their bickering. As long as they followed orders to kill the people, their mission would be accomplished.
Slowly closing the encirclement, it became smaller and smaller. Yu Yi endured the pain and quickly picked up the sword, slashing towards one of the guards with a sword wind. To block the sword wind, the guard also swung her sword.
Yu Yi seized the opportunity, quickly throwing the person on her back out and shouting loudly, “Young Lady, run!”
