“Her heart has always been weak; she should avoid intense emotions, both extreme joy and sorrow.” The door to the hospital room was shut tightly. Outside in the hallway, a doctor in a white coat stood with several family members gathered around him.
The doctor, with graying hair and a strong, dignified demeanor, furrowed his brow deeply, making the wrinkle between his brows even more pronounced.
“I warned you last time—don’t agitate her. But you ignored it, again and again, as if her heart wasn’t fragile enough already.”
Dr. Zheng, an internationally renowned medical expert, had overseen Su Wan’s condition for many years, keeping her in stable health for over two decades.
Although she had a heart condition, she rarely experienced flare-ups.
Recently, though, her episodes had increased, all because of one person.
The “last time” Dr. Zheng mentioned was when Su Wan had an argument with Li Yang, which sent her to the emergency room in the middle of the night.
Su Wan had been hospitalized several times, but Li Yang had never accompanied her.
Now that he was here, it came as quite a surprise to Dr. Zheng.
Seeing him silently standing in the hallway stirred up a complex mix of emotions within Dr. Zheng.
In youth, people often make decisions impulsively, only to regret them later. He had once offered advice over the phone, but it had no effect.
Last night’s incident had already spread through the hospital.
Nurses and doctors were all talking about it, and Dr. Zheng overheard bits and pieces, shaking his head in dismay.
Perhaps this day had been inevitable all along.
With this thought, he softened his tone and continued, “From now on, she needs a long period of rest and recuperation. Do not allow her mood to fluctuate like this again. Understood?”
Su Xiaoqing’s eyes were bloodshot; she hadn’t slept all night, and her whole demeanor was drained.
“Dr. Zheng, is our Wanwan okay?”
“She’s stable now,” Dr. Zheng paused, then added, “But if she keeps getting upset, it will eventually take a toll. I know you’re willing to spend money on her care, but money can’t buy time. Try to let go of things a bit more; if she’s happy, you’ll be happier too, and life will be much longer.”
Those last words made Su Xiaoqing’s heart tremble.
Yes.
Life is still long. Spending it on someone undeserving is hardly worthwhile.
She nodded, a hint of warmth finally emerging on her pale face.
“I understand. Thank you.”
“I’m glad you do.”
Dr. Zheng was relieved.
After the doctor left, Su Xiaoqing blocked the two men present, observing their mixed expressions with a sneer, “Didn’t you see the sign? ‘Non-family members are not allowed inside.'”
Su Ming became furious, “She’s my daughter, who shares my blood!”
“So what? We’re divorced.”
“I don’t agree. Why should we be divorced just because you, Su Xiaoqing, say so?”
Su Xiaoqing replied coldly, “You committed adultery, evaded taxes by giving gifts to your illegitimate daughter under false pretenses—I have all the evidence. Do you think I can’t divorce you?”
Not only could she divorce him, but she could also send him to jail.
Su Ming’s cheek muscles twitched unnaturally, clearly shaken.
“You…we were still husband and wife…”
Su Xiaoqing replied indifferently, “Precisely because we were once married, I’m letting you save some face. Don’t push your luck.”
“Playing the good father, yet your first instinct was to check on your ‘fainted’ younger daughter before running back here to put on a show.”
“…”
In a few words, she exposed his intentions, leaving Su Ming speechless.
He wanted to lash out but, remembering Su Xiaoqing’s warning, he could only turn away angrily. As he left, he called out to his “good son-in-law.”
“Li Yang, you’re coming with me!”
