In the evening after school, Su Wan declined an invitation from a group of girlfriends to go out. According to the duty roster, it was her turn to clean today. As a law-abiding citizen, Su Wan packed her homework neatly into her bag and, in front of her classmates, quietly walked to the back of the classroom to pick up the broom.
Turning around, she suddenly came face to face with two pairs of pitiful eyes.
She recognized them—two classmates who were the class’s sanitation officers and deputy officers. With their official titles, they were essentially the scapegoats for everyone who didn’t want to do the cleaning.
Both were “good students” who had ended up in the class by accident. In this class, which had been filled through monetary donations, they seemed completely out of place and were particularly easy to bully.
From the very first week of school, the underachievers, led by Su Wan, had taught them a lesson, and from then on, the cleaning duties had fallen on their shoulders.
The teachers knew about it, but they turned a blind eye.
There was no other choice—if it weren’t for the annual contributions from these students’ families, the school would not be able to operate properly.
Although Su Wan had changed a lot recently and no longer bullied her classmates, the two students still trembled nervously under her gaze, standing stiffly and not knowing what to do.
“What are you staring at me for? I’ll clean it up later,” Su Wan said.
“No, it’s just…”
She held the broom in her hand as though it were a weapon aimed at the sanitation officers, and one of the boys nearly started to cry.
Su Wan knew that speaking kindly wouldn’t make them feel at ease, so she pretended to be impatient and said, “Don’t just stand there getting in my way. Can’t I sweep the floor and get some exercise?”
The two of them exchanged glances, and after her scolding, they relaxed and let out a sigh of relief.
Although they didn’t understand why Su Wan suddenly wanted to clean, as long as it didn’t cause them trouble, they were fine with it.
Other students in the class who were packing up their bags also hesitated. If they left while Su Wan was cleaning, it would seem like they were going against her.
One by one, they hesitantly set down their bags, walked to the back, and began to sweep the floor, moving slowly and reluctantly.
The two sanitation officers stood by the podium, watching as Su Wan led the wealthy students in sweeping the floor in an orderly fashion. They felt as though the whole world had gone a little surreal.
They slapped their faces in a daze.
It seemed like it wasn’t a dream after all.
Su Wan emptied the trash into the bin and finally put down the broom. Once the other students finished sweeping, a few of them stepped forward to take the trash out to the bin.
It was such a harmonious class collective.
By this time, school had already been out for a while. Besides the students on duty, most of the others had left. Only Shen Tingyan’s desk still had books that had not been packed up.
Su Wan’s gaze briefly landed on his desk, then quickly lost interest as she looked away.
She packed her bag, and the driver was already waiting outside. When she got home, a hot meal would be waiting for her, and life was very convenient.
She didn’t mind sharing the private car and the little kitchen with Shen Tingyan, but unfortunately, he didn’t appreciate it.
From the hesitant tone of Aunt Chen, it seemed that the food from before had already been thrown out.
Su Wan didn’t have the patience to waste time doing things in vain.
The two of them were essentially strangers living under the same roof, and if they could, they would only cross paths without ever speaking.
She had no intention of trying to force a conversation.
Su Wan slung her bag over her shoulder and slowly walked out the classroom door. The school didn’t allow parking nearby, and the driver had come too early, waiting at the corner near the east gate. She crossed the playground and exited through the small gate.
At this time, the school was nearly empty.
Su Wan passed the buildings and turned towards the playground. She hadn’t taken many steps when she suddenly heard voices. She quietly peeked out and saw several students in uniform talking to each other.
“You’re pretty arrogant, huh?”
“So what if I told you to pick up a ball? You wanna die or something?”
“Aren’t you just an orphan living at the Su house? Just a dog trailing behind, thinking you’re something important.”
As soon as the words were spoken, they all laughed out loud.
Su Wan froze in place, neither able to walk forward nor retreat, and had no choice but to stop in her tracks.
Here it comes…
