Today is a day off work. Su Wan woke up from a nap, groggy, and found several missed calls on her phone. They were from her mother.
“Wanwan, are you feeling upset?”
“Although I don’t know why you did this, Mom supports you!”
Speaking of which, the relationship between this mother and daughter is quite special.
Su Wan has developed a habit of not expressing herself, and her parents share some responsibility for that. A negligent father is busy doting on his illegitimate daughter, while a career-focused mother doesn’t understand how to navigate intimate relationships.
Over time, Su Wan has become somewhat like her mother in her youth, with a stiff demeanor that is unlikely to endear her to anyone, further discouraging her father from being close to her.
Su Wan hates her father yet desperately longs for his love. Her mother, fully aware of this, knows she can’t make up for the lost affection, so she tries to make Su Wan happy with money.
Whatever you like, I’ll get it for you.
Whatever you want to buy, go ahead.
She remains completely unaware that she’s going about it all wrong.
By the time Su Wan’s mother truly realizes she need to mend their relationship and make up for the love that was once missing, she discovers just how distant her biological daughter has become.
She could only force Li Yang to marry Su Wan, whom he doesn’t love.
“…”
Su Wan reminisces about all this, sighing repeatedly.
How similar the personalities of the mother and daughter are; beneath their cold exteriors lies a clumsy and painful softness that ultimately leaves them both scarred.
Before she could respond to the message, another notification chimed—her mother had sent a new message.
“Wanwan, how’s your health? I want to come see you.”
Her mother asked cautiously.
She usually never inquires this way, but yesterday’s events were significant, and after hearing from Aunt Wang that the couple had been fighting lately and not at peace, she was very worried about Su Wan’s health and couldn’t help but long to see her daughter.
The message lingered for just a few seconds before it was immediately retracted.
Someone is typing…
“Wanwan, how’s your health?”
She had deleted the phrase “I want to come see you,” being careful and a bit sad.
Su Wan pressed her lips together, hesitating for a moment before replying: “I’m at home right now, not going to the set today, just resting. Have you had lunch? If you don’t mind, join me; I’ll ask Aunt Wang to prepare more dishes.”
Only a brief silence passed before her mother replied immediately.
“I’ll be there soon!”
A few short words, yet they couldn’t hide her joy and urgency.
Su Wan quickly reminded her, “Take your time; the food here will take a little while to prepare, so please drive safely.”
“Okay!”
When Aunt Wang heard that the mother and daughter were going to have a meal together, her half-closed eyelids suddenly opened wide. She put down the vegetables she was preparing and happily started turning in circles: “I’ll prepare a few more dishes; don’t worry, they’re all your favorites!”
Su Wan smiled and said, “Then I’ll trouble you, Aunt Wang.”
After brushing her teeth, washing her face, and changing her clothes, it was only a matter of moments before the doorbell rang.
Aunt Wang welcomed the guest in, carrying beautifully packaged supplements and seasonal fruits.
Su Wan peeked her head out from the bedroom door and saw a middle-aged woman in a sleek gray suit with very short hair. She had strikingly beautiful features, resembling Su Wan quite a bit, and her black short hair made her look even more capable and polished.
“Wanwan!”
She trembled slightly in her voice, rushing forward but then awkwardly stepping back half a meter, standing in the hallway, hesitant to approach.
Su Wan sighed silently to herself.
She took her mother’s hand gently and called out in a soft tone, “Mom.”
