Chapter 33 – Will Shen Luchu Go Mad With Rage When He Finds Out Jiang Shiyuan Is Getting Married?
Ministry of Revenue Minister’s Residence —
Su Liluo knew men well. She understood that you couldn’t give them everything all at once—that you had to alternate between loosening and tightening your grip. So when she reunited with her “Brother Pei” and confirmed his identity, she didn’t linger. Using the excuse that she didn’t want to disturb him while he was doing something important, she tactfully took her leave.
Just as she returned from outside, the gatekeeper came to report that the General of Zhen Nation’s household had sent a congratulatory gift.
“A congratulatory gift? For what?” Su Liluo was utterly confused.
“Wait a second—who did you say sent it? The General of Zhen Nation’s residence?”
Jiang Shiyuan?
What a joke! Jiang Shiyuan sending her something?
Su Liluo quickly ordered for the gift to be brought in.
A servant brought in a rectangular brocade box without delay.
Su Liluo ‘s face twitched violently at the sight of the box. When she opened it, she saw a very familiar hairpin inside.
Zhi Chun gasped. “Miss! Isn’t this the hairpin you returned to Young Lord Shen? How did it end up with Miss Jiang?”
Su Liluo ’s expression darkened. She squeezed through gritted teeth, “Shen Luchu, that big! Dumb! Idiot!”
What else could it be? It didn’t even take a guess—clearly, that idiot Shen Luchu had given the hairpin to Jiang Shiyuan again!
And Jiang Shiyuan, in turn, had casually tossed it back to her—mocking Shen Luchu and slapping her in the face at the same time!
She was livid!!
The joy she’d felt after gaining the upper hand with Pei Ziye was instantly replaced by seething rage.
She had never seen someone as arrogant and brainless as Shen Luchu. Other than being able to read a few books, his brain was clearly filled with manure!
Who did he think he was? Jiang Shiyuan had given him that embroidered sachet with sincere feelings, and he turned around and gave it to another woman without hesitation. And now, he took a rejected gift and sent it to Jiang Shiyuan?
No normal person would do something so shameless!
The more Su Liluo thought about it, the angrier she got.
She was furious at Jiang Shiyuan. Utterly furious!
Was Jiang Shiyuan blind or what? How could she possibly fall for someone like Shen Luchu? And now even she had been dragged into this mess!
Thankfully, she had wised up and turned to the Pei family instead.
But Jiang Shiyuan? She nearly fell face-first into a cesspit!
Su Liluo huffed, “Go and pack up everything Shen Luchu has ever given me—gather it all and send it back to the Marquis Wenyuan’s residence.”
“Miss, are you serious, or is this a strategy to lure him in by pushing him away?” Zhi Chun asked in confusion.
Su Liluo shot her a glare. “What luring? Is Shen Luchu worth my effort to play tricks on?”
Shen Luchu was nothing! If Jiang Shiyuan didn’t want him, then of course Su Liluo wouldn’t want him either!
Marquis Wenyuan’s Residence —
Moyu, having delivered the gift, returned hesitantly to the Marquis Wenyuan’s residence.
He wasn’t sure how to report back. If he told the truth, he feared it would trigger his lord’s bad temper. But if he lied, he risked bigger trouble down the line.
Still hesitating, he had just stepped past the front gate when a voice called out, “You’re back? Was the gift delivered?”
Startled, Moyu looked up to see Shen Luchu walking toward him from under the eaves near the gatekeeper’s corridor.
“Is the young master heading out?” Moyu asked instinctively.
Shen Luchu’s expression stiffened slightly. “No, just taking a walk.”
A thought struck Moyu—had the young master been waiting here for news the entire time?
He recalled how, earlier in the day, Shen Luchu had returned home in high spirits. He went straight to the storage room, digging through health supplements and rare art pieces. In the end, he picked the hairpin Jiang Shiyuan liked and had Moyu deliver it to the General’s residence at top speed.
That memory made Moyu even more unsure of himself.
“Well? Why aren’t you answering? Was it delivered or not?” Shen Luchu asked, clearly annoyed.
Moyu had served him for years and was known for being efficient, but lately, he’d been strangely hesitant and unreliable.
“Yes, Young Master, the gift was delivered,” Moyu said through gritted teeth.
It was technically true, and Moyu consoled himself with that. Shen Luchu probably wouldn’t follow up anyway.
Sure enough, Shen Luchu’s long-tensed expression relaxed the moment he heard that. He smiled slightly and didn’t press further.
Why would he need to ask? That hairpin was something Jiang Shiyuan had loved at first sight—of course she’d be thrilled.
He knew Jiang Shiyuan was only upset because she didn’t receive a birthday gift—not because of those few overheard comments.
Those things he’d said were widely acknowledged truths—he wasn’t the only one saying them. If she got offended, she’d have to go argue with half the capital.
She wasn’t that petty.
“Did you tell her this won’t happen again? If she pulls a stunt like this next time, I won’t indulge her anymore,” Shen Luchu asked.
Truthfully, Shen Luchu was still a little mad. This time, he’d already compromised a lot—he’d repeatedly tried to contact her and humbled himself more than once. He didn’t want Jiang Shiyuan to think she could just keep pushing the line.
Moyu looked troubled. “Young Master…”
“You didn’t say it?” Shen Luchu’s face darkened, and he was just about to scold him when—
A snort of laughter rang out behind him.
“What a load of crap.”
Shen Luchu turned around. “Su Liluo?”
The capital’s most refined and well-bred lady from the Ministry of Revenue—speaking so crudely?
Frowning, Shen Luchu stared at her. At first, he’d thought Su Liluo ’s sharp retort to Zhou Jingshen earlier was just a fluke.
Apparently, that was her true nature.
“Yes, it’s me.”
Su Liluo raised her chin and strutted over, not even pretending to be demure anymore.
Shen Luchu scowled, like he was looking at something extremely unpleasant. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh, I’m just here to return something on Jiang Shiyuan’s behalf.”
Su Liluo handed over the rectangular brocade box.
Shen Luchu’s expression froze when he saw it. “Why do you have it?”
“Why do I have it? Ha—”
Su Liluo let out a cold laugh. “That’s what I’d like to ask you. What were you thinking, giving me something Jiang Shiyuan picked out? And then giving her something I returned to you? Is the Marquis Wenyuan’s household so breaking you can’t afford gifts? Or has water soaked into your brain, Shen Luchu? Huh?”
Her voice was sharp and filled with disdain, but Shen Luchu didn’t even seem to hear her. His eyes were fixed on the box as he demanded, “I asked you—how did it get to you?”
“How else? Jiang Shiyuan didn’t want it and threw it to me—”
“Impossible!”
Before Su Liluo could finish, Shen Luchu cut her off.
“You’re lying. Jiang Shiyuan would never toss aside something I gave her. She’s always treasured everything from me. Even if I drew her a stick figure, she’d frame it and hang it up!”
As if on cue to prove him wrong, a breathless errand boy arrived at the gate carrying a small trunk.
“Young Master Shen! My young lady asked me to return these things to you. Please take a look.”
Without waiting for a reply, the servant opened the trunk.
Inside were all sorts of miscellaneous items—clay figurines Shen Luchu had bought on a whim, his discarded wood carvings, ruined calligraphy scraps… And on top, a framed drawing.
It was the stick figure Shen Luchu had once doodled. He had said it looked a bit like Jiang Shiyuan, so she had framed it and treasured it.
Ten years of knowing each other—and this was all she had. Nothing valuable, barely anything of significance.
Shen Luchu’s face turned an ashen gray. “What’s the meaning of this?”
The servant didn’t explain. Seeing the man himself there, he simply dropped off the items and left.
Su Liluo couldn’t resist laughing. “What else could it mean? She’s done with this pile of trash.”
Shen Luchu’s face went pale as he stared at the box like his soul had been ripped from his body.
Su Liluo watched his devastated expression and found it hilarious. Her earlier frustration was completely gone.
If returning a few trinkets could upset this idiot so badly—
Then what if she told him that Jiang Shiyuan was already engaged to the Pei family? Wouldn’t that drive him insane?
At that thought, her eyes gleamed…
