Farming in the Beast World, Leading the Whole Tribe to Prosperity
Farming in the Beast World, Leading the Whole Tribe to Prosperity | Chapter 22: New Medicine

Zhuo Mu had tied a hemp rope around the little cow’s neck and secured it to a wooden post of the straw shelter.

But maybe because of the pain from its wound, or because it was full and too lazy to move, or perhaps due to its slow nature, the little cow didn’t try to escape. Instead, it lay down right there and fell fast asleep.

The problem was with the big cow—it was gone!

Wen Ze’s mind was racing with thoughts of “My milk is gone, my work cow is gone!” His face turned pale as he quickly started looking around.

“Did the cow run away?” It’s all his fault for being so focused on making sulfur soap that he didn’t even notice when it ran away!

Zhuo Mu glanced at him, signaling him to stay calm.

“It’s in the forest over there, not far. The calf is still here so it won’t leave. It’s probably just grazing. If you’re worried, I can go get it back now.”

Wen Ze’s heart, which had been in his throat, finally settled back into his chest.

“You can sense where it is?” he asked.

Zhuo Mu gave a casual “Hmm” in response.

Wen Ze thought to himself, “Beastmen’s hunting skills are really impressive. He didn’t even notice it.”

“Then, can you please keep an eye on it? If it goes too far, try to herd it back.”

“Okay.”

While waiting, Wen Ze sat on the ground, watching the sunset slowly disappear behind the mountains to the west.

The sky gradually darkened, and aside from the wind, all he could hear was the chirping of insects.

Behind him, the firewood burning in the fire pit made some crackling sounds from time to time.

“Moo,” he heard a low sound.

Turning his head, he saw the big cow. It looked full and content. Its belly was round and its udder swollen as it slowly made its way toward the straw shelter at a satisfied, leisurely pace.

“Moo!” The calf opened its eyes and happily responded.

As expected of a creature from the beast world, as soon as its wound had been treated, it was able to stagger to its feet and raise its head to ask for milk.

The big cow stood still, mooing and licking the calf’s fur with its thick tongue.

It was such a heartwarming sight that Wen Ze let out a sigh of relief. Just then, Yin He came running over to tell him that the soap was probably cool enough. He stood up and headed back.

He first tested it with his finger and said, “With so little, it cools down really fast.”

Then, using a wooden stick, he cut off three small pieces. Each of them took one. The pieces looked creamy and had a smooth appearance.

“Let’s go to the stream and try it out.”

The three of them walked together, and when they reached the water’s edge, Wen Ze went ahead and showed them how to use it. After dipping his hands in, he kept rubbing them together.

Soon, a layer of foam appeared in his palms, along with a dry, slightly tingling sensation from the sulfur.

The others followed his lead and began washing their hands with the sulfur soap as well.

“Oh wow, brother,” Yin He said, his already round eyes widening even more. “This feels amazing!”

Wen Ze laughed and said, “Once you’ve rubbed it enough, just rinse off the foam with water.”

Yin He replied, “Got it!”

After washing, Yin He kept turning his hands over, constantly admiring them.

“Every time I wash the dishes, my hands feel all greasy, and I just want to scrub them with sand for a long time to get them clean. But now… they’re so clean!”

“I’ve never felt my hands this clean before!”

“Brother, this soap is amazing and so convenient! Why didn’t you make it earlier?”

Wen Ze: “…” I never thought of it before.

“As long as it works,” he purposely skipped the question and turned to Zhuo Mu, “What do you think? I mean, the amount of sulfur.”

Zhuo Mu stared at him and replied, “I think we could add a bit more. The dirt on our hands is gone, but the pests probably won’t be so easy to kill.”

Wen Ze asked, “Would adding too much cause trouble?”

“No, we’re tough. I usually use a pretty strong dose when I give medicine.”

Wen Ze slapped his forehead.

He hadn’t thought it through and still thought of them as the “humans” he met in the past.

Beastmen and half-beastmen all had strong physiques. Even if they had a small injury or pain, they usually didn’t need medicine—it would heal on its own quickly.

Especially with beastmen, their size was so huge that this sulfur they made was barely enough—it wasn’t even worth the effort.

“Okay, I got it.” Wen Ze stood up energetically and shook off the water droplets on his hands. “We happened to have some animal oil and ash water left. How many pieces of sulfur ore do you have?”

Zhuo Mu brought out all his stock, and Wen Ze quickly did the math. “That should be enough. Let’s go, we’ll get it done now.”

Yin He raised his hand. “I want to help too! Brother, can I have a piece of soap when it’s ready? I want to use it to take a bath!”

Wen Ze: “Of course, no problem!”

Yin He: “Yes!”

The first time, it was unfamiliar and challenging, but by the second time, it became much easier.

This time, when making the sulfur soap, Zhuo Mu took the lead.

He had already memorized Wen Ze’s method, so Wen Ze only needed to watch from the side.

The three of them worked together, and before long, they had used up all of Zhuo Mu’s sulfur ore.

It was already late, and instead of waiting for the sulfur soap to cool, they took a quick bath, dried their hair, and went straight to bed.

Especially Wen Ze, who had learned from Bai Xia’s previous experience. He was worried about not cleaning properly and ending up with lice on his head.

The next morning, Wen Ze went to check on the two cows he’d been thinking about, while Zhuo Mu went to inspect the sulfur soap.

The young cow was still lying quietly outside the straw shelter. After the whole night passed, the muddy ground around him had become dirty, smelly, and slippery.

The big cow wasn’t around, it’s probably somewhere looking for grass to eat.

Wen Ze felt bad about it and, after some effort, cleaned up both inside and outside the straw shelter. He then picked some fresh grass and dropped it on the ground.

The little cow let out a happy “moo” and lowered its head to eat the fragrant grass.

From the corner of his eye, Wen Ze noticed Zhuo Mu, with his broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long legs, walking toward him against the light. He looked incredibly handsome.

Both of them spoke at the same time. “This cow…”

“The soap…”

Zhuo Mu was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled and said, “You go first.”

Wen Ze responded with a soft “mm,” then explained, “The cows are getting too dirty here. I was thinking of setting up a new shelter over there and tying the young calf to it.”

He pointed towards the downstream of the creek, where it would be easier to feed the cows without it affecting their water supply.

Zhuo Mu nodded and had no objection.

“I’ll go make it in a bit. The soap is also ready.”

Wen Ze’s eyes lit up. “I’ll go over and take a look!”

On the broad green leaves, a large chunk of bright yellow sulfur soap had indeed completely solidified.

In the soft morning sunlight, the soap gleamed with a glossy sheen.

Wen Ze reached out and touched it. Drops of dew, formed overnight, gathered into a small stream and smoothly trickled down its surface.

“There’s still a tiny bit of impurity, but it’s good enough,” Wen Ze said happily to Zhuo Mu. “Let me find something to cut a piece of the sulfur soap, and you can take it to Bai Xia so he can try washing his hair with it.”

“Okay.”

They didn’t waste any time and got to it right away.

The solidified sulfur soap wasn’t brittle at all. On the contrary, it was soft, and cutting through it felt smooth and satisfying, like a great stress reliever.

Wen Ze decided to cut the entire large block of sulfur soap into even smaller pieces. He trimmed the edges, and in the end, they became neat, rectangular blocks.

Even though it had a faint unpleasant smell, the soap’s beautiful color made Wen Ze really like it.

He grabbed a clean leaf, wrapped one of the sulfur soap blocks in it, and handed it to Zhuo Mu.

“I’ll head over now.”

Wen Ze replied, “Okay, I’ll go make breakfast.”

The two of them went their separate ways.

Soon, Zhuo Mu arrived outside the cave where Bai Xia was staying and changed into his human form.

Bai Xia had already sensed him and walked forward quickly to meet him.

It was clear he hadn’t slept well the night before, with heavy bags under his eyes and dark circles.

“Zhuo Mu! Did you come to bring me the new medicine?” As he spoke, he couldn’t help but dig his fingers into his scalp, pressing so hard it almost seemed like he was going to draw blood, and his hair became a mess.

Zhuo Mu handed him the items. “This is sulfur soap. Try washing your hair with it.”

“Sulfur soap?” Bai Xia mumbled, taking it and sniffing it. He subconsciously frowned.

It kind of smells like a rotten bird egg… but he didn’t dare to say it.

“Do I just wet my hair and then rub this stuff in?” he asked, making sure.

Zhuo Mu replied, “Yes, but if it starts to burn your scalp, don’t use too much. You can wash your hair about three times a day, but don’t use it if you have any open wounds.”

Bai Xia didn’t really believe the “rotten egg” would work, but since he was already in this situation, there was no harm in giving it a try.

“Alright, I’ll remember that. How much supplies do you need?”

Zhuo Mu shook his head. “Let’s see how it works first. Also, this sulfur soap isn’t something I made.”

“What? Who made it then?”

“Wen Ze.”

Bai Xia’s heart, already filled with doubt about whether this would work, froze entirely.

He had been living in the tribe for over twenty years, but he had never heard of Wen Ze being skilled in medicine…

Sigh, forget it. He’s already in this situation, so using it won’t hurt.

He said politely, “Okay. If it works, I’ll pass the supplies to Wen Ze.”

Zhuo Mu gave a casual “hmm” in response and turned to leave.

After sending out the sulfur soap, Wen Ze didn’t bother with it anymore. His full attention was on the two cows.

Not only did he ask Zhuo Mu for help to bury the posts again, but to make the cow more comfortable, he even brought in some dry grass and laid it around the posts.

Yin He helped him cut the fresh grass, and Wen Ze fed the cow several times a day, always sneaking in moments to bond with it when the adult cow wasn’t looking.

He didn’t care if the calf could understand or not, he kept whispering in its ear. “You must be really happy being taken care of by me, with all this tasty grass to eat. Once I find some beans, I can grind up some more feed for you, and it’ll make you smell so nice. Why not stay with me?”

The calf blinked its big, clear eyes and chewed away with its thick lips.

After a few times of being hand-fed, it’d get up expectantly and moo as soon as it saw Wen Ze coming.

Even the big cow didn’t head into the forest in the evening; it just ate the grass that Wen Ze had given it.

Wen Ze felt pretty confident about his “taming” plan. With a bit of courage, he reached out and touched the cow, which stood over two meters tall.

Afraid the big cow might suddenly kick him or use its horns to push him, he purposely stood to the side as he touched it.

Luckily, the cow was so focused on eating that it didn’t even glance at him!

The warmth under his palm was comforting, the cow’s hair stiff and prickly, and under the skin, he could feel the solid, strong muscles.

Wen Ze smiled contentedly, squinting his eyes, and gave the cow a few pats. “Eat more and produce more milk!”

“Zhuo Mu! Wen Ze! Are you there?” A voice full of excitement called out.

Wen Ze pulled his hand back and noticed it was Bai Xia who had arrived.

He took a few steps forward and asked, “Are you looking for Zhuo Mu? He was called by the tribe leader.”

Bai Xia rushed over and firmly grabbed Wen Ze’s hand, and his excitement was obvious.

“No! I’m looking for you!”
