Farming in the Beast World, Leading the Whole Tribe to Prosperity
Farming in the Beast World, Leading the Whole Tribe to Prosperity | Chapter 39: Exchanging Seeds

Wen Ze looked at him, feeling deeply moved.

The kindness he offered, in the eyes of these beastmen, was greater than the sky.

That was enough.

His expression softened, and with a slight smile on his face, he said, “I already talked it over with your tribe leader. I’ll be responsible for improving the weaving tools. And I won’t just give away the weaving tools for free. Once they’re done, whoever wants one will have to exchange supplies for it.”

“But don’t worry. Although the idea is mine, since you provide the materials, tools, and labor. This will cover part of the costs, and in the end, it will all be exchanged for the tools.”

Even so, the people of the Rainbow Sun Tribe still felt uncomfortable and surprised by his generosity.

Chi Yu stepped forward, nodding and explaining to everyone, “Yes, we agreed from the start that the new tools would be exchanged for supplies.”

Then he turned to Wen Ze and said, “Your ideas are valuable, so it’s only right that you get supplies in return. If you didn’t ask for anything, we would feel uncomfortable.”

Huo Lan snapped back to reality and said sincerely, “That’s true, Wen Ze. Honestly, you don’t really have to give us a better deal. Just showing us how to make these new tools is more than enough for us.”

Wen Ze insisted, “Business is business. Rules are rules. If I start breaking them, who would trust me in future exchanges?”

Huo Lan opened his mouth to respond but thought to himself, “He didn’t know about others, but he trusted Wen Ze completely.”

Not wanting to make things difficult for Wen Ze, everyone decided to stick with his arrangement.

Since they were going to make the spinning wheel, they needed to pick a few more people.

Zhuo Mu would definitely be the main worker, along with Chi Yu, Huo Lan, and several others.

They cleared a new area, and Wen Ze, with a plan in mind, broke off a stick and began drawing a design on the ground. “The spinning wheel has many parts, like these long rectangular wooden blocks that need to be this length and width…”

Aside from the few people standing behind him who were listening intently, others who were spinning yarn or weaving fabric in the distance also grew curious and frequently glanced over to take a look.

Wen Ze explained for quite a while before finally picking up the stick in his hand and saying, “That’s roughly about it.”

Zhuo Mu and the others stared at the “design” on the ground, their expressions growing more confused by the second.

Huo Lan couldn’t help but ask, “So… all these wooden sticks, blocks, and planks will somehow turn into a spinning wheel?”

Realizing he might have spoken wrongly, he quickly turned red and explained, “I didn’t mean I don’t believe you!”

Wen Ze chuckled. “It’s fine. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure it’ll work either. But first, we’ll carve out all the parts I need, and we’ll adjust if we run into any problems.”

Everyone looked at Wen Ze with eager eyes and said at the same time, “Alright!”

Although he had been through this several times, Wen Ze still wasn’t quite used to such scenes.

Zhuo Mu was a warrior from the South Mountain Tribe, Chi Yu was the tribe leader of the Rainbow Sun Tribe, and Huo Lan and the others were all leaders in their own right.

Yet now, they were all cooperating with him, waiting for his instructions.

Wen Ze tried his best to appear calm, cleared his throat, and said, “Zhuo Mu, you’ll handle the wheels. Huo Lan, you’re in charge of the axles. Chi Yu, you’ll be responsible for…”

The first step in making the spinning wheel was to gather wood.

It didn’t take long for Chi Yu to arrange for the tribe members to deliver several types of wood for Wen Ze to choose from.

Not entirely sure which type was best, Wen Ze decided to experiment slowly.

With tools distributed, everyone found a spot to sit and began carving the wood as instructed.

While working, Wen Ze also had to supervise, reminding everyone how to make the adjustments.

In order to improve the accuracy, he also marked the wood with charcoal.

Once they got busy, Wen Ze became so absorbed that he didn’t even notice the curious stares, the passing time, or his own hunger.

Focused and determined, everyone worked from morning to afternoon, and at last, the first batch of parts was finished.

At this point, no one knew how Wen Ze would assemble them, so they stood behind him, curiously watching.

Wen Ze’s dark eyes gleamed with focus. His long, slender fingers, marked with thin calluses, hovered in the air, sweeping from right to left before pausing on the axle.

Then, his gaze sharpened as he began picking up parts and putting them together.

The process didn’t go smoothly—since everyone had worked on different parts, some didn’t quite fit.

But Wen Ze wasn’t in a hurry. Without looking up, he raised his hand slightly and said, “Knife.”

Zhuo Mu, with perfect timing, handed him a small black-silver knife. Wen Ze held it and lowered his head to begin adjusting the parts.

The sharp knife was handled with such skill by his beautiful fingers that the wood shavings fell like snowflakes, making the scene relaxing to watch.

Once the adjustments were done, he fitted the part, tested it, and, finding no issues, moved on to the next one.

Zhuo Mu stayed by his side the entire time, handing him the tools he needed.

Normally, this work should feel boring and frustrating due to its fine details.

But Wen Ze’s movements were so smooth and firm that, to everyone watching, it was like watching a performance.

As the sun began to set, Wen Ze’s skillful hands assembled the scattered parts around him, one after another.

The axle, the wheels, the frame, the spindles… piece by piece. In the end, a simple spinning wheel was completed.

Everyone’s expressions changed from initial curiosity and confusion to outright amazement.

“Beast God, this is incredible…” Huo Lan stared wide-eyed at the spinning wheel, looking it over from top to bottom. “If I hadn’t been watching this whole time, I would never have imagined that a pile of wood could be assembled into a tool!”

Chi Yu nodded enthusiastically, his eyes practically glowing as he asked Wen Ze, “So, is it done? Can we use it to spin thread now?”

Wen Ze replied, “Not sure yet. We’ll have to test it first…”

He was in the middle of speaking when something suddenly surprised him.

When did so many people gather behind him? The crowd was huge, and he couldn’t see the end of it. Could it be that half the tribe showed up?

Have they been staring at him while he works? This is a bit uncomfortable…

His nose started picking up distinct scents of everyone around.

Thankfully, after spending so much time in the beast world, he was used to it and didn’t feel overwhelmed.

He paused for two seconds, forcing down the discomfort and clearing his throat to regain his composure. “Uh, can someone bring me a bundle of processed hemp—”

Before he could finish, a large, messy bundle of hemp—washed and dried but far from neat—was thrust in front of him.

Just by glancing at the slightly paler hand holding it, Wen Ze knew it was Zhuo Mu. He knew him too well by now.

Looking up, Wen Ze gave Zhuo Mu a small, tight-lipped smile, then took the hemp and placed it by the spinning wheel.

He carefully tied the hemp to the spindle. Then, coordinating the movement with his foot, he tried to get the spinning wheel working.

“Creak, creak.” The wheel turned, making a harsh, unpleasant sound.

“It’s moving, it’s moving! The hemp’s wrapping around the wheel too!” Huo Lan clapped his hands excitedly.

But someone frowned and questioned, “Even if it works, the thread it spins can’t be used.”

Chi Yu and the others noticed it too—the thread was thick and uneven. It might work for making rope, but it definitely wasn’t good enough for weaving fabric.

Chi Yu’s first reaction wasn’t to press Wen Ze for answers or put pressure on him. Instead, he shot a sharp glare at his own people.

“What’s the rush? It’s not even adjusted yet.”

Huo Lan also defended him, “Exactly! If you’re going to watch, just watch quietly. Don’t interrupt Wen Ze.”

The beastman who had spoken up closed his mouth awkwardly.

Wen Ze was amused by Chi Yu and the others’ nervous reactions. Smiling with his eyes, he said, “Let me think about how to improve it. Zhuo Mu.”

“Mm.” The man responded.

“Do you have any fruit oil?”

“Yes.” Zhuo Mu pulled out a small jar of nut oil from his space.

Nuts were hard to gather, and extracting oil was even more difficult, so most people didn’t bother with it.

Only Zhuo Mu, who sometimes used it when treating others, kept some on hand.

Wen Ze smiled as he took it. “Thanks.”

He first dripped some oil onto the axle. With the oil, the harsh noise softened, and the turning became smoother and easier.

Then, he continued adjusting, experimenting, and improving the spinning wheel little by little.

As evening fell, he faced the setting sun, and everyone stood behind him, careful not to block the light.

The people behind him kept coming and going, but it didn’t affect Wen Ze, who was absorbed in his work.

Finally, after about two more hours, he turned the wood, and the tangled hemp on the spinning wheel slowly became thin, even thread.

He pulled out a bit, examined it carefully, and made sure there were no issues.

At that moment, an overwhelming sense of achievement hit him, and the extraordinary feeling made him so emotional that his eyes even turned red.

Turning his head, he met the expectant gazes of the others and, with a hoarse voice, said, “It worked!”

After a moment of silence, everyone cheered at once.

“That’s amazing!”

“We did it, we really did it!”

“Wen Ze, you’re incredible! You’re our great benefactor!”

“Thank you for the blessing of the Beast God!”

Wen Ze, with red eyes, smiled along with everyone and tried to stand up.

However, he had forgotten he had been sitting for too long, and his legs suddenly gave out, causing him to fall forward.

Everyone was startled and quickly rushed to catch him.

Zhuo Mu, being closest, naturally grabbed his arm. His strong arms steadied Wen Ze’s waist, preventing him from falling.

After helping Wen Ze to his feet, Zhuo Mu didn’t immediately pull his hand back. Instead, he let Wen Ze lean on him to slowly regain his balance.

Wen Ze thanked him, then happily raised his hand and cheered along with everyone.

He even tugged at Zhuo Mu’s sleeve, looked him in the eyes, and shouted, “Zhuo Mu, we did it! We have a spinning tool we can use now! We can spin a ton of thread all at once!”

Saying this, he almost felt like crying himself.

Moving from modern times to an ancient beast world, the gap in lifestyle was just huge—way bigger than he could ever imagine.

Things that used to be so easy now required ten, even a hundred times more effort.

But it was this hard work that made the results feel so precious.

Even a small improvement was enough to make him feel like celebrating.

The sense of fulfillment he got from doing everything with his own hands was unlike anything else.

His heart was not only filled with determination for the present but also brimming with hope for the future.

At the same time, he felt deeply thankful for all the people around him, especially Zhuo Mu, who was there to share in his joy.

Zhuo Mu was the kind of beastman who didn’t show much emotion, and he hardly smiled.

But in that moment, seeing the excitement, joy, and trust in the young, handsome half-beastman’s eyes, his heart softened, and he was deeply moved. He didn’t even realize his lips had lifted into a smile.

“Mm,” he whispered gently, “We did it.”

Wen Ze met his gaze, and when he saw him smile, Wen Ze couldn’t help but smile even brighter.

He stood there for a while, letting his legs get used to it, then unconsciously hopped a few times on the ground.

“In the future, we’ll have spinning wheels and weaving frames! We’ll have all kinds of tools! Life is only going to get better!”

This time, before Zhuo Mu could say anything, someone else grabbed Wen Ze’s shoulder and started praising him nonstop.

Wen Ze followed the flow and jumped into the crowd, celebrating and cheering with everyone.

Zhuo Mu watched Wen Ze’s energetic figure disappear into the crowd, and his deep red eyes softened.

In his heart, he silently responded to Wen Ze’s earlier words: As long as you’re here, it will definitely happen.

The celebrations went on for a while, and soon, Huo Lan and the other half-beastmen, eager to try things out, asked Wen Ze for permission before sitting at the spinning tool, where each of them took a turn spinning thread for a bit.

Huo Lan’s eyes went wide, and he couldn’t stop exclaiming, “Beast god, this really saves effort! Just one step, one turn, and the wheel spins the thread so easily!”

“Oh, where did all the hemp go? Does anyone have more? Quick, give me some!”

“Huo Lan, that’s enough. Get down now. We’ve got so many people waiting for their turn.”

“Right, right, let me try just a little more.”

“Okay, I’ll go home and get more hemp.”

As soon as Huo Lan stood up, someone else quickly took his place, and again, there was another round of exaggerated exclamations.

Wen Ze had been pushed out of the crowd. Through the gaps, he saw everyone scrambling to spin thread and couldn’t help but laugh so much that his shoulders shook.

He turned to Zhuo Mu beside him and said, “These people are just like Yin He, rushing to do the work? Hahaha.”

Zhuo Mu chuckled and met his gaze, “Are you hungry?”

He hadn’t realized it until then, but the moment Zhuo Mu asked, Wen Ze felt a sharp pain in his stomach and remembered he’d only had breakfast that day.

“Yes! I’m so hungry! Is there anything to eat?”

“Tribe Leader Chi Yu has already had someone prepare the food. Just wash your hands, and you can eat,” Zhuo Mu replied.

Although Chi Yu was very interested in the spinning tool, being a beastman, he couldn’t compete with the half-beastmen for a turn. So, he happily walked over instead.

At that moment, Wen Ze, in his eyes, was like a precious treasure, and the more he looked, the more he liked him.

“Are you hungry? Come on, let me take you to eat.” As they walked, Chi Yu added, “Actually, while you were working earlier today, Zhuo Mu brought over some roasted meat and vegetables, wanting to give you some. But you pushed him away with a cold face, acting like you didn’t want to be bothered.”

Wen Ze blinked and remembered what happened, feeling a bit embarrassed. He explained to Zhuo Mu, “I was just really focused at the time. It wasn’t meant to be directed at you.”

Zhuo Mu nodded. “I know.” That’s why he hadn’t even mentioned it.

Seeing that he wasn’t bothered, Wen Ze smiled warmly.

That evening, after eating a full meal, he rubbed his little belly contentedly and slowly made his way back to the spinning wheel.

Surprisingly, there were still people lined up to try the spinning wheel.

In the line, Wen Ze spotted Huo Lan again.

He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Didn’t you already use it?”

The others chuckled and said, “This is his third time in line, and we can’t get him to leave!”

It was so dark outside, but Wen Ze could still see Huo Lan blushing.

Holding back a laugh, Wen Ze said, “Alright, it’s getting late. Everyone should head back now and come again tomorrow.”

Reluctantly, Huo Lan said, “But you’re leaving for the South Mountain Tribe tomorrow, right? You’ll definitely take this spinning wheel with you.”

Wen Ze had originally planned to talk about it the next day, but seeing everyone looking at him expectantly, he decided to reassure them.

“I’m staying one more day with Zhuo Mu. We’ll leave early the day after tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ll need your help to make another batch of spinning tools.”

He hadn’t forgotten the tribe members back at the South Mountain Tribe. With the tools available, it was only right to make sure they also had spinning tools.

Huo Lan and the others cheered. “That’s great! We’ll come early tomorrow to help!”

“This spinning wheel is already made. With so many of us, making more tomorrow will surely be quick!”

“I don’t have a metal knife, but I do have a sharp bone knife. I can carve some small wooden pieces with it and bring them over.”

“I’ll take care of the fire. I saw you burning holes into the wood earlier today.”

Wen Ze was pleased to see how enthusiastic everyone was and that they’d thought of everything. He smiled. “Thanks, everyone.”

“It’s no trouble,” Huo Lan scratched his head and asked, “Wen Ze, when you finish the new tools, can I exchange this old one for it? You can ask for anything you need in return.”

The other half-beastmen all turned to glare at him and complained, “You’re always getting ahead of us!”

Wen Ze laughed, “Don’t worry. Your tribe will definitely get its share. As for how to exchange, I’ll discuss it with your tribe leader tomorrow.”

Having worked hard all day, Wen Ze yawned repeatedly toward the end.

Zhuo Mu calmly said, “It’s late. Everyone should rest now.”

The group, understanding the situation, quickly said their goodbyes to Wen Ze and left.

Wen Ze put the spinning wheel in the cave, then took a bath and went to bed.

The next morning, he asked Chi Yu to send someone to the South Mountain Tribe to let them know they’d be staying one more day.

Then, with a group of people, they eagerly got to work on making the spinning wheels.

Thanks to yesterday’s experience, not only Wen Ze but also Zhuo Mu and the others made rapid progress today.

Zhuo Mu and a few members of the tribe were in charge of making the parts, while Wen Ze focused on assembling and adjustments.

Before long, one spinning tool after another was completed and neatly arranged in front of Wen Ze.

If not for the limited number of tools, Wen Ze believed they could have made even more.

By noon, he stood up, took a quick count, and found there were eighteen spinning tools in total.

This number wasn’t easy to distribute.

“Wen Ze, aren’t you going to continue assembling?” Chi Yu asked when he noticed Wen Ze was lost in thought.

“Yes, I’ll continue,” Wen Ze replied, looking at him. “These eighteen tools, including the one from yesterday, I plan to leave for your tribe. The ones we make this afternoon, I’ll take back to the South Mountain Tribe. Do you want to exchange them as individuals or on behalf of the tribe? Let’s figure out the supplies first.”

Ever since they arrived, there had been a steady flow of people in front of Chi Yu’s cave.

Today was even worse; most of the tribe didn’t go hunting or gathering and instead came to watch Wen Ze make the spinning wheels.

As soon as he finished speaking, someone eagerly shouted, “Leader, no matter what the cost, I definitely want one of these spinning tools! My partner and kids said if I don’t get one, they won’t let me go home!”

As everyone laughed, the others started shouting as well, “I want one too! My father brought back a lot of hemp, and they’re just waiting to spin it!”

“Food, hides, wood, stones… Wen Ze, just tell us what you want!”

“Those supplies aren’t special! I’ve got pearls and gemstones! Exchange with me!”

The overlapping voices made Wen Ze’s ears ache.

Chi Yu suddenly let out a powerful beastman aura and coldly said, “Quiet down!”

The tribe leader’s authority made everyone tremble, and they quieted down.

Chi Yu turned to Wen Ze with an awkward smile. “They’re just really excited about the spinning tools, so don’t mind them. As for the supplies, just tell me what you want.”

Wen Ze replied, “I just heard someone mention pearls and gems. Do you have any black silver?”

Chi Yu paused, then said, “Aside from my small knife, everything else belongs to the tribe.”

“Alright, let’s skip that then,” Wen Ze said, remembering that Chi Yu’s knife was worth a hundred pieces of pottery—far too expensive for him to exchange.

“I don’t need fabric, but anything too heavy is hard to carry,” Wen Ze said. “I want seeds, honey blocks, spices, or even pearls and gemstones.”

Chi Yu nodded. “You want seeds that the South Mountain Tribe doesn’t have?”

Wen Ze replied, “Yes, and the seeds of… tomatoes. I definitely need those.”

Chi Yu nodded again. “Got it. Let’s go talk over there.”

“Okay.”

He brought Zhuo Mu along, and they went to a quieter spot.

The three of them sat on the grassy field. Chi Yu then spoke calmly, “For the 19 spinning tools you will leave behind, I’ll offer 20 animal hides and two baskets of tomatoes from the tribe in exchange.”

Wen Ze frowned slightly. “That’s too much.”

Chi Yu raised his hand to signal him to finish. “At the current speed, we’ll have 20 spinning wheels assembled this afternoon. While the materials and tools are provided by us, you’re the one who came up with the idea. If you want to take the spinning tools, you just need to give us ten animal hides and one basket of tomatoes.”

“That balances out, so in the end, we’ll pay you 10 animal hides and one basket of tomatoes.”

Wen Ze quickly worked it out in his mind and said, “This exchange is unfavorable for you.”

Chi Yu shook his head. “I don’t think so, really. What you’ve left behind in our tribe isn’t just the weaving method, the pottery kiln improvements, but also the design for the spinning wheel. For us, that’s the most valuable thing.”

“But after we take the spinning tools back, we can exchange them with others and get more supplies.”

Chi Yu smiled casually. “Well, that’s your business. As for what I said, if you don’t believe me, you can ask someone from the Rainbow Sun Tribe. If I do it this way, they wouldn’t think it’s unfair. They might even call me cheap for only giving you this much.”

Wen Ze chuckled at Chi Yu’s words, his good-looking face lighting up in an instant.

When he wasn’t sure about something, he looked to Zhuo Mu.

Zhuo Mu spoke at the right moment. “This exchange is fine.”

Wen Ze nodded. “Alright, let’s do it this way then.”

Doing business with people outside the South Mountain Tribe should involve making a profit.

“Alright, that’s the first thing,” Chi Yu continued. “The second thing is the chili peppers you mentioned earlier. I asked one of the older half-beastmen in the tribe, and he mentioned that he probably saw it around in the Rainbow Sun Tribe’s territory.”

“Really?!” Wen Ze was much more interested in this than the other things. He leaned forward eagerly and asked, “Does he remember where exactly he saw them?”

Chi Yu smiled. “He barely remembers it, but I’ve arranged for him to take us to look this afternoon.”

Wen Ze jumped up in excitement but then, thinking about the plans for the afternoon, his face dropped.

“But I still need to assemble the spinning wheels. I won’t have time.”

Although Huo Lan and the others had been learning for two days, the final adjustments still required Wen Ze to do it personally.

Chi Yu smiled and suggested, “How about we go tomorrow?”

Wen Ze shook his head. “We’ve been out for too many days. My younger brother is alone at home, and I can’t leave him any longer. I need to go back.”

Chi Yu finally revealed his true intention. “You could bring your brother over.”

Zhuo Mu’s handsome face instantly turned cold, and his sharp gaze locked onto Chi Yu.

In a cold voice, he said, “Chi Yu, I challenge you to a duel, just you and me. Do you accept?”
