The dried-up clay crumbled away piece by piece, gradually revealing the true appearance of the item inside.
A flawless sheet of moon-white glass—unblemished, without a single crack, and perfectly uniform in thickness!
Wen Ze’s heart beat wildly.
He reached out to brush the dust off the glass, carefully grasping its edges. As he slowly lifted it, he instinctively held his breath, afraid that this beautiful and rare glass might shatter.
The glass was heavy, opaque, yet translucent.
The rain had yet to stop, and the natural light filtered through the glass, casting a soft bluish glow over Wen Ze’s face and body.
Standing amidst the crowd, veiled in the misty rain, he seemed almost divine.
His black eyes also sparkled like little stars from the excitement.
After a few seconds, Wen Ze slowly lowered the glass. The first person he looked for was Zhuo Mu.
The tall, imposing man was already watching him, his sharp gaze filled with joy.
The silent crowd snapped back to their senses and erupted into cheers.
Inside Wen Ze, something seemed to ignite with a boom.
That feeling rushed straight to his head, like fireworks bursting in rapid succession and sending tingling waves from his core to his fingertips.
At first, he mumbled, “It worked…” But his voice grew louder and louder. “Did you see that? We made glass! Ahhh!”
Zhuo Mu stared at him, a smile playing at the corners of his lips, which made his handsome features even more striking.
“I saw it.” His voice wasn’t loud, but it was lost in the sea of cheers.
Yet Wen Ze could read his lips, and that only made his excitement soar even higher.
He had to do something—something to express the overwhelming joy in his heart.
Instinct took over. He lunged forward, throwing his arms around Zhuo Mu in a firm embrace!
“Hahaha! We did it! We can use glass from now on!”
He was so happy that his nose tingled with emotion. He hugged Zhuo Mu even tighter, both hands patting his back.
Zhuo Mu was slightly taken aback by the hug, but he didn’t step back. Instead, he lowered his gaze and watched Wen Ze intently.
After a brief moment of surprise, he raised his arms and hugged Wen Ze tightly in return.
The half-beastman’s frame was slender compared to his own, almost as if he could envelop him with his towering presence, but he fit perfectly into his embrace.
A profound sense of satisfaction surged within Zhuo Mu, an indescribable joy welling up in his heart. The smile on his face grew even brighter.
His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, and he couldn’t help but speak near Wen Ze’s ear, “Yes, we did it. You made it happen, Wen Ze.”
His warm breath brushed against Wen Ze’s ear, sending a tingling sensation through him.
Wen Ze instinctively shrank his neck, but his grip on Zhuo Mu remained firm. Tilting his head up, he met Zhuo Mu’s gaze and shouted excitedly, “No, we did it! Hahaha!”
Truthfully, they had taken a few detours—if they had molded the sand with clay from the beginning, they might have succeeded much earlier.
But that didn’t matter. Early or late, success was all that counted!
Everyone was celebrating. Many embraced their partners and loved ones, so their actions didn’t seem out of place at all.
Or rather, those who noticed could only offer a smile filled with blessings.
The crowd buzzed with excitement for quite a while before gradually calming down.
Wen Ze took the lead again and started breaking open the remaining clay molds to inspect the glass inside.
Only one piece, perhaps due to the fire or some other reason, had burned into a web-like pattern, but the others were completely intact.
In terms of color, the glass varied depending on whether plant ash or alkaline water was added.
Wen Ze preferred the one with alkaline water—it was clearer and more transparent.
He could already imagine how beautiful the windows made from this glass would look.
Just seeing the glass every morning would be a visual delight.
Sang Hui smiled and said, “We can finally relax this time!”
The others nodded repeatedly. “Yeah! The glass is amazing, and it’s so large! We absolutely love it!”
“The best part is, the raw materials are easy to get!”
Apart from Wen Ze and a few core members of the tribe, the others didn’t know that making glass required plant ash or the exact proportions needed.
But they did know that it required a lot of sand.
And sand was everywhere in their tribe’s territory.
If they ever wanted more glass in the future, they could ask Wen Ze to make it for them!
This was truly something worth celebrating!
Just when everyone was already overjoyed, Wen Ze announced, “Let’s divide the cracked piece among everyone. You can polish it into jewelry or something.”
“We get a share too?!” A half-beastman exclaimed in excitement.
Wen Ze smiled. “Of course! This is the result of all our efforts together.”
“Ahhh! Can we split it now? I’ve been dreaming of making a glass necklace!”
“I want a bracelet!”
“I want a glass pendant!”
Wen Ze readily agreed. “Sure, let’s distribute it now! But be careful with the glass shards, they’re sharp.”
When people heard this, they excitedly gathered around. The straw shelter was already small, and with more people squeezing in, it was on the verge of collapsing.
Sang Hui had to step forward to maintain order. “Don’t crowd! Each family send one person, and form a line after you’ve discussed. Half-beastmen first, beastmen after! I’ll distribute the pieces!”
Joyful smiles spread across every face, and the excited chatter continued endlessly.
After breaking the cracked glass into pieces, Wen Ze and Zhuo Mu stepped aside, watching with a smile as Sang Hui handed out the glass shards to everyone.
Each person received two to three pieces.
A portion was set aside for those who couldn’t make it to the pottery kiln because they had other things to take care of.
Just as the glass was distributed, the sky cleared, and warm sunlight poured down from above.
Everyone was captivated by the glass, holding it up to the light. They admired it over and over again.
The glass shimmered with a jade-like glow, truly dazzling.
Bai Ling exclaimed with joy, “If this were polished into round beads, it would look amazing! And it’s much easier to obtain than jade! Wen Ze, will you be able to make glass in other colors in the future?”
Wen Ze nodded. “Yes, I will.”
“Then I want to collect different colors of glass! That way, I can make a multicolored glass necklace!”
“Alright, I’ll keep an eye out for you.”
“Thank you! You’re the best!” Bai Ling happily stepped forward and gave Wen Ze a hug.
Seeing this, the other half-beastmen gathered around. They also hugged Wen Ze and talked to him nonstop.
Everyone’s enthusiasm was overwhelming, and Wen Ze cast a pleading look at Zhuo Mu for help.
But surprisingly, the man mimicked Wen Ze’s actions from yesterday, smiling without offering any help!
Wen Ze rolled his eyes at him in exasperation—so you’re holding a grudge, huh?
The successful glassmaking was a big event, and with everyone in high spirits, someone suggested a feast that evening, which was met with enthusiastic approval.
So, by dusk, everyone had brought ingredients, firewood, and cooking tools to the open space where Wen Ze’s new house was being built.
People cooked over the fire, sang and danced around the bonfire, and laughter filled the air.
Wen Ze noticed that a lot of people, while chatting, were either knitting or using rough stones to polish glass. They were multitasking between relaxing and working.
After the rain, the night sky was crystal clear, and the Milky Way stretched across like a jade belt flowing through the heavens.
Looking up, Wen Ze suddenly thought of the hug he had with Zhuo Mu earlier that day.
Slowly, his face flushed, but he couldn’t stop the smile from forming on his lips.
Life like this was truly wonderful, he thought.
***
The next morning, Wen Ze packed his things and sat on the back of the giant white python.
Yin He also transformed into his Beast form and followed beside them.
“Brother, Brother Zhuo Mu, are you really taking me to the Feathered Fierce Tribe?” Yin He asked in disbelief.
Wen Ze turned to him. “Didn’t we already agree on it during the feast last night? If it weren’t for making bricks and glass, we would have gone to dig up potatoes long ago. Besides, you’ve been talking about wanting to go out for a while now, so we might as well take you along.”
Zhuo Mu added, “Let’s get everything done before the autumn harvest festival.”
Yin He excitedly bounced, and with his beast form’s size, the ground trembled beneath him.
“I’ve been wanting to go out so badly! This is great! Hahaha!”
“Alright, let’s head to the tribe first to check in with Sang Hui and Wu Ye, and ask them to look after things while we’re away.”
Zhuo Mu nodded. “We should also ask them to make more charcoal and glass.”
Yin He eagerly took the lead. “Got it!”
After bidding farewell to the tribe, Zhuo Mu led the way south.
On their journey, they passed through the Rainbow Sun Tribe and encountered some of their hunters. After exchanging greetings, they politely declined an invitation to stay.
After passing through the Rainbow Sun Tribe, they continued southeast for over two hours.
Considering Yin He’s stamina; they took two breaks along the way.
By the time they reached the Feathered Fierce Tribe’s territory, it was already afternoon.
Beastmen’s beast forms were huge, and when they focused on the journey, they moved quickly.
So despite traveling for only half a day, they were already far from the South Mountain Tribe.
When Wen Ze was in the Rainbow Sun Tribe, he noticed the difference in climate.
Since the Rainbow Sun Tribe was further south, it was noticeably warmer.
The Feathered Fierce Tribe was at a similar, but since their territory was by the sea, it was not only warm but also humid.
From what Wen Ze had observed along the way, the biodiversity in the Feathered Fierce Tribe’s land was richer compared to the South Mountain Tribe.
Whether in the forests or the grasslands, the plants were growing very well.
He couldn’t help but look forward to it and said to Zhuo Mu, “I’ve seen a lot of plants that our tribe doesn’t have. Maybe we’ll discover new seeds this time!”
The giant python nodded its massive head. “I hope so too.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Wen Ze noticed that Yin He had once again been lured away by some unknown small beast. He sighed and called out, “Yin He! Stay close to us, don’t run off too far!”
They didn’t deliberately conceal their movements while traveling. Before long, two massive golden eagles appeared in the sky above them.
One of the eagles even had a half-beastman sitting on its back.
The golden eagles flew high, and with the sun glaring down, Wen Ze couldn’t make out the half-beastman’s face clearly.
It wasn’t until the person leaned forward and shouted, “Wen Ze! It really is you!” that he recognized the voice—it was Yu Qiao!
Yu Qiao was a half-beastman of the white bird species. His claws were not only sharp but also agile, making him one of the key figures in crafting the improved version of the weaving frame.
Recently, his name had spread across several surrounding tribes.
Wen Ze waved excitedly toward the sky. “Yu Qiao! We’re here to dig up potatoes!”
Yu Qiao responded, “Got it~ Follow us, I’ll take you to the tribe first!”
“Okay—”
The two golden eagle beastmen maintained a steady speed, guiding them from above.
After another half an hour, Wen Ze and his group arrived at the Feathered Fierce Tribe’s settlement.
It was a vast, flourishing forest with thick, sturdy tree trunks and deep green canopies that block out the sky and sunlight.
True to its reputation as the territory of bird beastmen, the tribe had built large nests out of branches, straw, and other materials high in the trees, where they lived.
As Zhuo Mu and the others passed through the forest, many curious faces peeked out from their nests to watch them.
At the very center of the forest was a large clearing, and the ground was marked with layers of bird claw scratches.
Wen Ze saw the two golden eagle beastmen circling downward. When they were still three to five meters above the ground, Yu Qiao eagerly jumped off the eagle’s back.
He was as light as a white bird gliding through the water, his long arms slightly outstretched. After lightly tapping his toes on the ground, he bent his knees to absorb the impact of landing.
Then, he straightened up and walked toward Wen Ze with a smile.
Wen Ze was stunned by his graceful movement. After sliding off Zhuo Mu, he approached him and praised, “Yu Qiao, you jumped down so easily from such a high place! That was so cool! Can you teach me?”
Now that the Feathered Fierce Tribe was also using spinning wheels and weaving frames, not only Yu Qiao but also the two golden eagle beastmen had taken on human form. They, too, were dressed in hemp clothing.
The difference was that their clothing remained a dull gray, while Wen Ze and his group had already started using dyed fabrics.
For example, Wen Ze wore a dark red top and blue-green pants, making him look both sharp and vibrant.
Yu Qiao chuckled. “Sure! It’s easy to learn! Actually, our tribe’s half-beastmen are used to jumping up and down, so I didn’t really notice how cool it looked, haha.”
Looking enviously at Wen Ze’s clothes, he added, “But your clothes—these colors look amazing! I heard you were the one who taught everyone how to dye fabric?”
Wen Ze smiled slightly and nodded.
Yu Qiao gestured for them to follow him.
As Wen Ze moved his arm, Yu Qiao noticed the pattern printed on his sleeve!
“Are these leaf patterns?” he asked in surprise as he walked alongside him.
Wen Ze replied, “Yes.”
“They’re so beautiful! They look just like real leaves!” Yu Qiao said with sparkling eyes.
Wen Ze took the opportunity to promote his tribe’s goods. “They’ve also dyed them in other colors and printed different patterns. If you like, you can come to our place and exchange them.”
Yu Qiao nodded repeatedly. “After the autumn harvest festival, I’ll definitely go! What about you? Have you been busy making bricks these past few days?”
Wen Ze smiled. “Something like that.”
“You look so happy. You must have succeeded, right?”
“The first batch didn’t. The new brick molds will need to dry for another month before we fire them again. By then, they should be ready.”
Yu Qiao nodded. “A month isn’t too long. We’re here.”
Wen Ze turned his head and met the gaze of Luan Xun, the tribe leader of the Feathered Fierce Tribe. Behind him stood two handsome beastmen.
The climate here was warm, so they all wore sleeveless hemp clothes, exposing their strong, muscular arms.
“Wen Ze, Zhuo Mu, you’re here,” Luan Xun greeted them with a smile and quickly walked over to greet them.
Wen Ze smiled in return, “Tribe Leader Luan Xun, this is my younger brother, Yin He. I brought him out to see the world.”
Now in his teenage form, Yin He greeted politely, “Hello, Leader Luan Xun.”
Luan Xun patted his shoulder. “Welcome, welcome! Come, let’s sit over here.”
Around a sturdy tree was a flat, open space paved with sand and stones.
On the ground were a stone table and several stone stools.
Looking up, a massive bird’s nest was securely built on the tree trunk.
After they sat down, a beastman brought over some bowls and placed them on the stone table. Then he filled them with clear water.
Wen Ze glanced at the color of the bowls and chuckled. “These were made in our tribe, weren’t they?”
Luan Xun laughed as well. “Haha, that’s right! The pottery your tribe made is the most popular thing here right now!”
No wonder he used them to serve guests.
Wen Ze and the others thanked him before picking up the bowls to drink.
Luan Xun’s sharp eyes swept over their clothes. Like Yu Qiao, he admired them enviously and complimented them several times.
“Wen Ze, you’re truly talented—not only did you make such amazing pottery, but you also dyed the fabric so beautifully.”
When they arrived earlier, many tribespeople had been amazed by his clothing.
It was clear that soon, more people would be coming to ask about them!
Wen Ze smiled and glanced at Zhuo Mu before replying modestly, “It’s thanks to everyone in the tribe trusting me.”
For a brief moment, Luan Xun’s envy surged.
Ah! If only Wen Ze was part of their tribe!
What kind of luck did the South Mountain Tribe have to deserve this?
After chatting a bit more, Luan Xun brought up the main topic: “Do you want to go dig potatoes now, or rest for the night and go tomorrow?”
“There’s still plenty of time. Let’s go today.”
Luan Xun nodded. “Alright. By the time we get back, the sun will be setting. I’ve already had the tree nest prepared for you, so you don’t need to rush back tonight.”
Yu Qiao was afraid Wen Ze would refuse, so he sincerely persuaded, “That’s right, traveling at night isn’t safe. You should stay.”
Wen Ze thought to himself that with Zhuo Mu around, safety shouldn’t be an issue.
And he did want to explore the Feathered Fierce Tribe a bit more, so he accepted their kindness.
“Alright. We’ll just dig some potatoes, and I want to show you something new after.”
Everyone was extremely curious about his words and couldn’t wait to see what it was.
Once Wen Ze and the others had rested enough, Luan Xun, Yu Qiao, and Yu Qiao’s soon-to-be partner, Feng Jian, took them to dig up potatoes.
Both Luan Xun and Feng Jian’s beast forms were golden eagles, with the former being larger and the latter having darker feathers.
When they transformed, their talons gleamed with sharp, cold light, and their piercing golden eyes carried an intense sense of pressure.
Feng Jian crouched down, waiting for Yu Qiao to climb onto his back. Once Yu Qiao grasped the long feathers on his wings, Feng Jian soared into the sky.
Zhuo Mu transformed into a pure white giant python and carried Wen Ze, following Feng Jian on the ground.
Yin He had also transformed into his beast form, but as Luan Xun hadn’t taken off yet, he turned to Yin He and asked, “Do you want to sit on my back?”
Yin He widened his eyes in surprise and asked excitedly, “Can I?”
He had never ridden on a golden eagle before or flown in the sky! He was incredibly curious!
Luan Xun replied, “Of course.”
Yin He looked to Wen Ze for approval.
Wen Ze felt a little embarrassed and was about to politely refuse when Luan Xun added, “It’s just carrying a young cub. It’s fine.”
“In that case, I’ll trouble you, Leader Luan Xun. Thank you.”
Luan Xun shook his head. “No need to be so formal.”
The moment Yin He heard that he could ride a golden eagle, he let out an excited shout and even changed how he addressed him. “Thanks, Brother Luan Xun!”
He shifted back into human form and rushed to Luan Xun’s side.
Luan Xun crouched down, and after Yin He climbed on, he gave a few reminders, “We fly high, and unlike Yu Qiao and the others, you don’t have wings, so hold on tight and don’t move around.”
Yin He nodded enthusiastically. “Got it!”
Even though Luan Xun was the last to take off, the advantage of flying was clear, and he quickly caught up.
Seeing this, the giant python increased its speed, and Feng Jian in the sky also flew even faster.
Wen Ze looked up and saw that they were nearly reaching the clouds, making his heart itch with excitement.
At that moment, Yin He on Luan Xun’s back shouted loudly, “Ahhh! So high! This is awesome! Hahaha!”
Wen Ze: “…” The joys and sorrows of humans are truly not shared.
The three beastmen pushed their speeds to the limit, and after about twenty minutes, they reached the grayish lowland that Yu Qiao had mentioned.
Feng Jian landed, and Yu Qiao jumped off his back and walked over to Wen Ze.
“This is a low-lying area that retains water all year-round, and some places are easy to sink into. Follow my footprints carefully.”
Wen Ze nodded seriously and made sure Yin He walked between him and Zhuo Mu.
Then, Yu Qiao led the way through patches of muddy wetlands.
Wen Ze noticed that not only were the trees here shorter, but even the grass didn’t grow as tall as in other places.
Seeing the grayish color of the lowland, he guessed that the soil contained a lot of salt and alkali.
After walking for about ten minutes, Yu Qiao pointed to the ground. “This is the place.”
Excited, Wen Ze took out a stone hoe and crouched down to start digging.
“The plants here aren’t very lush, and I haven’t seen any fruit on the trees along the way. How did you find the potatoes?” Wen Ze asked curiously.
Yu Qiao and Feng Jian exchanged a glance, their faces turning slightly red.
“Ahem,” he hesitated before saying, “Well, Feng Jian and I were out playing when we found them. He brought me here by flying.”
Having spent enough time in the beast world, Wen Ze could tell how ambiguous the phrase “out playing” sounded. His face turned red as well.
Just as he was feeling awkward and unsure how to respond, his stone hoe struck something hard.
He turned over the soil and his eyes lit up.
“It’s really a potato!” Even though they were a bit small and were only about the size of his palm, Wen Ze was still thrilled.
“I’m going to dig up more to take back and save some for planting next year!”
“No problem,” Luan Xun, the leader of the tribe, said. “You can dig as many as you want. But can we ask you for a favor?”
Wen Ze replied, “Go ahead.”
“If these potatoes grow well, would you be willing to teach us how to grow them?” Luan Xun asked.
“No problem!” Wen Ze agreed enthusiastically.
Luan Xun appreciated straightforward people. Hearing Wen Ze’s response, he was delighted and said, “Come on, let’s help Wen Ze dig together!”
Yu Qiao immediately revealed his claws. “Once we’re done, if there’s still time, I want to take Wen Ze to see a kind of grain.”
Wen Ze paused in his digging and asked with interest, “What kind of grain? It wouldn’t be wild millet, would it?”
Yu Qiao shook his head. “No, it doesn’t grow as abundantly as wild millet—just in patches. This grain also grows in clusters, and when the husk is peeled off after ripening, the grains inside are yellow, about this big, and they have a slightly sweet taste when chewed.”
Judging from the space between his fingers, it was about the size of rice.
But rice isn’t yellow, though.
Feng Jian chimed in from the side, “Here, we call that kind of grain yellow grain.”
“Yellow grain…” Wen Ze murmured, lowering his head to continue digging potatoes.
“I know a few types of yellow grains… Do you eat this one?”
Yu Qiao thought for a moment before replying, “It’s edible, but we don’t eat it because peeling the husk is too troublesome.”
Feng Jian added, “Plus, a single grain is so tiny it’s not even enough to fill the gap between your teeth.”
Yu Qiao continued, “But yellow grain is really popular with wild mice and small birds. It’s already the season when it’s ripe, and I want to take you to see it before the other small animals get to it.”
Since arriving in the beast world, Wen Ze had found many roots, wild vegetables, and seasonings, but he had yet to discover a decent grain.
This was an opportunity he couldn’t afford to miss!
His movements with the stone hoe quickened. “Alright! We’ll go after we finish digging the potatoes!”
