Chapter 16: Psychological State Overcorrected
The mountain trail after the rain was truly very difficult to walk on. She had already heard the Japanese soldiers’ voices a long time ago.
But she waited up in a tree for quite a while before a group of about thirty to forty Japanese soldiers finally slowly came into her sight.
“So many?”
Based on the voices she’d heard earlier, Jiang Yu had thought there would be at most a dozen or so.
What should she do now?
This completely exceeded her expectations. Even though she was confident in her dart skills and reflexes now,
thirty or forty people, all armed with guns!
Jiang Yu hesitated only briefly before decisively gave up.
She still had a lot of important things to do. A mere few dozen Japanese soldiers weren’t worth the risk.
Wait!
That is…
Jiang Yu turned just as she was about to climb down the tree and pack up the cabin to temporarily avoid the soldiers.
At that moment, the last few soldiers at the back of the group finally fully came into her view.
One of them had a bundle of red cloth hanging at his waist.
Looking closer, it was a woman’s dudou (a traditional Chinese belly garment).
Another soldier’s waist had a bundle of red, too.
But that was a handful of bloody human ears.
No doubt!
That dudou and those ears could only belong to Chinese people!
Damn it!
Jiang Yu felt a sudden rush of blood to her head, and her movement paused as she climbed down.
By the time she reacted, several hand grenades had already been thrown into the soldiers’ ranks.
“Boom boom boom…”
Instantly,
explosions erupted among the Japanese soldiers, accompanied by screams.
The lead soldier shouted something.
The soldiers who had been grouped together quickly raised their guns, chambered rounds, and scattered.
“Too bad!”
Though she was extremely nervous, Jiang Yu didn’t regret her impulsive attack at all.
Especially when she saw a few soldiers still screaming in place after the blast.
She hadn’t expected that four grenades would only affect six soldiers.
And except for two who fell and seemed dead, the other four still yelled loudly.
Jiang Yu thought for a moment, suppressed the nausea in her stomach, and withdrew the grenades.
She pulled out several small stones from her space.
After aiming carefully, she shot at the soldier yelling the loudest on the ground.
Immediately,
there was a soft “puff” sound.
That soldier collapsed, twitched twice, and stopped moving.
This terrified the surrounding soldiers, who hadn’t heard any gunshots but saw a man suddenly dead.
They all started panicking and looking nervously around.
Afraid that they might be the next to die mysteriously.
Too bad!
Seeing how effective the stones were, Jiang Yu immediately shot a second, third, and fourth stone in quick succession.
By the fifth stone,
she watched as one soldier after another fell.
The terrified soldiers fired wildly in all directions.
Jiang Yu crouched behind the tree trunk, shrinking into a ball, listening to bullets whizzing by her.
She didn’t dare to peek out for a long time.
Fortunately,
the tree she picked was big enough to completely shield her.
Most importantly, the more nervous she got, the less her stomach churned.
Though she might vomit worse afterward…
Suddenly!
“XXXX…”
She didn’t catch what the officer, probably a major, said.
The gunfire stopped at last.
But the scattered soldiers began to pair up back-to-back, cautiously approaching the cabin area,
while carefully searching their surroundings.
Two of them were heading straight toward the direction she was in.
Damn it!
This was no good!
If they reached behind her tree, she would be surrounded…
In an instant, panic drove her to instinctively shoot another stone.
Immediately,
one soldier dropped where he stood.
Too bad!
Before she could continue, one of the already highly nervous soldiers nearby got so startled that he began shooting wildly around him.
Two of his shots even accidentally hit his own comrades.
Although they weren’t killed,
Jiang Yu, hiding behind the tree, couldn’t help but be amused!
Unfortunately,
that guy was soon silenced by a heavy slap from the major who rushed over.
With the gunfire stopped, Jiang Yu poked her head out again, ready to continue sneaking up on the soldiers.
But she saw the major talking to the dead soldier on the ground.
The soldiers who had been advancing toward the cabin suddenly began slowly moving toward the direction where Jiang Yu was hiding.
Crap!
Had they discovered her?
If they surrounded her and started another round of indiscriminate shooting, she’d be finished here for sure.
What to do?
It was too late to climb down now!
Watching the soldiers get closer and closer, Jiang Yu’s heart was pounding wildly as if it might burst out.
Ugh—
She shouldn’t have been so overconfident.
It was all because she had “overcorrected” her psychological state and become cocky.
Before, she had to psych herself up even to ambush a few people.
But now, with confidence overflowing, she dared to take on dozens of Japanese soldiers by herself…
Wait!
That’s not right!
Though it was still afternoon, because of the rain, the forest light was very dim.
The small stones she shot were nearly invisible and made hardly any sound.
How did they figure out where she was?
Jiang Yu peeked down to look.
Suddenly, she realized…
At that moment, she had another stone in her hand.
She quickly leaned out halfway, aimed at the soldier farthest from her, and threw a stone.
“Puff—”
“Baka yarou…”
“Bang bang bang…”
Sure enough!
The soldier who had just been approaching her immediately turned toward the direction of the dead soldier, firing wildly as he cautiously advanced.
Jiang Yu knew she had guessed right!
These guys were using the direction of her attacks to locate her position.
As the gunfire started to die down, Jiang Yu quickly changed her position and shot a few more stones.
Immediately, she took out a few more soldiers.
Just then, the gunfire flared up again.
Ha!
The Japanese soldiers weren’t that hard to deal with!
Watching them run around panicked and confused, she had already taken out more than a dozen in just a short while.
Although Jiang Yu felt a bit elated, she didn’t dare relax for a second.
Her hands kept moving without pause.
As soon as the gunfire eased up, she would peek out and continue shooting stones at the soldiers…
Wait!
What were those guys doing?
When Jiang Yu peeked out again, ready to keep shooting, she saw several Japanese soldiers gathered around the dead one on the ground.
They were flipping the corpse over and inspecting it carefully.
They whispered and gestured to each other, then
instead of frantically running in the direction she had been attacking,
they stealthily moved toward where she was again.
And very quickly, too.
Crap!
These guys must have discovered something else.
Though she didn’t understand how she had been exposed,
it was already too late for Jiang Yu to climb down and escape.
She could only keep firing stones quickly to kill the soldiers.
Too bad!
Her speed was fast, but the soldiers were getting close.
Within moments, they had already rushed beneath the big tree where Jiang Yu was hiding…
